Yeah, let's just hope they haven't completely obliterated all the good will around this app ecosystem in jerking around customers and developers. I, for one, am not going to purchase an iPhone until this actually happens and all the horrible details of the distribution channel come out. And then I'll wait to see what apps materialize. Once this all happens, this could really be a Treo killer. In some ways, I think it would serve Palm right. But Apple still has to not screw around with us going forward.

I think the app quality will be pretty good. Apple's historically been very good with their APIs. The big questions for me is how much network access will there be (AIM/IM), do apps get to run in the background (AIM/IM), and really that's about it. Everything else that I'm looking for -- password keeper, text editor, games, perhaps a browser that lets me download files  , a notes app that lets me choose a different font  , should be fine with whatever access Apple grants.

Open apps would be great, but I'd also be okay with price-controlled apps in iTunes. If Apple can keep them cheap but ensure developers get paid and have them make money on economies of scale, I'd welcome that too.
