Great idea. And I'm glad to see that Apple is implementing it rather than a third party. I for one agree with Apple retaining control especially in an application like this. While it would be more functional if third party apps could multitask, I'm sure we would have many more lock ups and crashes as a result. I prefer that the platform remain stable. I recently wrote a post about what Apple got write with 1.0 and 2.0 at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com/2008/08/06/was-steve-jobs-right-with-iphone-10/ John

data aggregation and push notification? No idea how those concepts could tie together in a dash... :)

How do 'calls', 'sms', and 'voicemail' equate to a today screen with calendar items as depicted in the image above?

No, Microsoft would have what's referred to as "prior art", as would many others who similarly aggregate multiple data streams for display in such an interface.

What Apple is trademarking isn't a display, but a methodology for handling this type of data aggregation and the user interactions that come with, and modify it.

If we look at the article:

"The user interface has a plurality of application icons. In response to a first gesture, the GUI changes the appearances of the application icons whose corresponding applications have user-adjustable settings," the filing explains. "In response to a second gesture on a selected application icon whose appearance is changed, the GUI displays user-adjustable settings of an application that corresponds to the selected application icon. In response to one or more additional gestures, the GUI changes one or more user-adjustable settings of the application that corresponds to the selected application icon."

My guess is that we are missing something here. I doubt that Apple would be going after Microsoft for patent royalties should this happen. It is a great concept though, and I am excited for it!

So let me get this straight. If winmo have had this for a long time, and that apple has put out a patent, microsoft will owe apple royalties?
