The iPod-Master is Gone! Long Live the Papermaster!
Apple has announced that Tony Fadell, senior VP of the iPod Division, and wife Danielle Lambert, VP of Human Resources, are "reducing their roles within the company as they devote more time to their young family."
Who will succeed Fadell, who is sometimes referred to as the "father of the iPod"?
Mark Papermaster, who readers may remember Apple is accused of stealing away from IBM. Says Steve Jobs:
“Mark is a seasoned leader and is going to be an excellent addition to our senior management team. Tony and Dani have each made important contributions to Apple over the past eight years. We’re sorry to see Dani go, and are looking forward to working with Tony in his new capacity.”
So with Papermaster working on the hardware, Scott Forstall on the software, and Eddy Cue running Internet Services (iTunes, App Store, MobileMe), it looks like Apple has completely overhauled its iPhone leadership in the last 6 months.
What does that mean moving forward? And will TiPb get our iPhone HD in 2009?!

IBM has a bad habit of tempering with former employees further employment. This has got to be in part sour grapes on IBM's part for the loss of the sales of PPC chips when APPLE switched to INTEL. How does Mr. Papermaster heading up the iPOD group interfere with IBM's business, it doesn't. IBM doesn't compete in this realm and neither does APPLE compete with IBM in any way. Services - no. PC's and MACs - no, Servers - no, Software - no. IBM likes to flatter itself far too much in the industry, and its paranoia has raised its ugly head in many other former IBMer cases. I suspect that Mr. Papermaster finally got tired of the new IBM philosophy, "Every moment here must be unpleasant." as opposed to the old attitude, "Respect for the individual." IBM's suit is specious, abusive and utter garbage. It should be dismissed.
IBM (Insidious Blue-smoke & Mirrors) has become accustomed to its role as 800-lb gorilla that rules with an iron fist. Unfortunately, that is now its corporate persona with both customers and employees (including executives). Hats off to Papermaster for being willing to stand up to this corporate bully and pursue a career opportunity of a lifetime. Although the lawsuit is without merit, it may unfortunately grind through the system for far too long based on the tenacity (and ruthlessness) of IBM's legal team.
Hats off to Papermaster and hope everything will be fine or at least better for Apple
