Here's the answer.

The buttons that use to appear above the numbers are gone in this new version. Instead, hold the 123 button to bring up an option menu.

Selecting COPY activated the magnify-and-drag option.

I like this much better.

@Sightez
First I'll say that I use both solutions, so my opinion came from using both, not just one. I'll also say that changing keyboards is easy: Settings > General > Keyboards. If that's too complicated, then wow.

And maybe you should define "a lot of things," because after using both, I can describe Clippy as requiring you to 'do a lot of things'.
Here's how:
1) This is the Clippy process of using the clipboard: tap "123," tap "stack," select the item I want pasted, close the popup, tap "123" to get back to keyboard.
This is the hClipboard process: Tap the globe, tap the item, tap the globe again.
That's 5 steps vs. 3. For someone who uses the clipboard a lot (emails, usernames, sms templates, etc.), it makes a big difference.

2) If I wanted to select a few paragraphs with Clippy, I would have to drag across many lines of text, and at the end make sure i stopped at the very right spot. It also doesn't always want to select, it takes a few tries sometimes. Very time consuming. hClipboard can copy several paragraphs in 3 taps, and doesn't require great accuracy (only have to tap beginning and end of paragraph.

3) Selecting specific text within Safari text fields (not address bar/search bar) can't be done with Clippy. As I type this I'm trying to select one word/sentence from what I'm typing in this reply box but I can't. Try it below, you won't be able to. This applies to bookmarklet solutions as well, because bookmarklets turn the text into a safari input field, so you have to copy the whole thing. hClipboard can select specific items in text fields.

There are a few more gripes I have with Clippy, but that's beside the point. Clippy to me makes you 'do more things' and is not better, in my opinion. Although the one nice thing I like about Clippy(the only reason I keep it) is because I can delete a whole paragraph quickly after selecting it.

This is my take on the 2 solutions, and I'm hoping the issues can be fixed at one point since it's still in beta.

Hi Radfahrer and Justin,
He actually put in his post that he selected the alternate keyboard (123) and didn't see anything. Justin, are you using Intelliscreen? If so, you need to go to "Performance" and and turn "Clippy" to on. Then click save, then apply. You should now be good to go.

I have a quick question: I noticed that you got your image from the iPhone Download Blog, but maybe you can still help. I have a jailbroken iPhone and have installed several custom keyboards (like the one in the image) that show the apple/command button in their screenshot, yet when I activate them in winterboard and respring, I have the new keyboard MINUS the apple/command key. Is there an additional package that I need to install in order to have this available to me? And is the button functional (like in a VNC client for instance-I'm not really kidding myself into thinking it would work in most Mobile OS X apps). Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed that today I downloaded the second version so it makes sense that when you tried it it wasn't more than one line. Thanks for responding! I do agree that it's far from perfect, but it's been nice doing some quick copy and paste stuff between apps. Hope they develop this further into a beast that can operate outside of text fields. THEN we's have something really going.

Can anyone help me figure out why Clippy is not working for me? I have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I get no Clippy buttons when I switch to the alternate keyboard. Are there any programs that are known conflicts or something?

I use this with Pastebud to copy any text from the browser (via email). With Fast Notes holding frequently pasted text, it's almost like a clip shelf. Great tip on forwarded emails, thanks. Still, an integrated solution would be great.

I do read TUAW but have to confess I don't follow the jailbreak scene and didn't read that article.

@Sebastien, I actually went to the iSpazio site, which posted their story on January 19th, to get the quote I used. All that was used was the image from TUAW and I kept the credit in for "the iPhone download blog" beneath the image. Nothing else was used from your site. Sorry for any confusion.

@Rene - TUAW wrote a post about Clippy this morning, quoting me. Since you're using their image (which is actually mine: iPhone Download Blog), I assume you read their post and would have appreciated a hola since I was the first one writing about this. But hey, no worries at all :)

@sebastian

We're pretty serious about crediting any and all tips we get (we even credit tips we get AFTER we've written posts 'cause we really want people to keep sending them in.

That said, I've checked and re-checked, and don't see a tip from you. It's possible it got lost somewhere on the intertubes, so if you'd consider writing us at news@tipb.com and letting us know how you sent it, hopefully if we can try and track it down.

@sebastien, if I got a tip from you I would have included your name for sure. This was not written based off of a tip though. Sorry.

Perhaps the post is not poorly written, but I still maintain that you can copy over one line at a time. I think your post makes it seem like this is halfhazard, when I would argue that it takes advantage of the iPhone's keyboard UI to make a relatively unobtrusive, easy to use copy/paste function across multiple apps, rather than having to use copiercn's clunky program.

@Jon, ouch - that hurts. Re-read the post again, I clearly said this is much better than previous attempts. At the same time it is far from perfect though...

Yeah, this story is badly writen. This is not just "another" attempt at copy paste, this is the BEST implementation so far, and a major leap regarding the other mod. And like the other reader said, copying text from email is easy. One more BIG reason for jailbreaking.

You've made a mistake in your description of this app. It does not copy text over just one line at a time...I just finished copying several paragraphs of text from an email to a facebook post in one press of copy and paste. It works fantastic. As far as emails go, click the "Forward E-mail" button, which brings up the text entry field, leaving you free to copy and paste text, even when it wasn't user entered. I think this is an important update to your post.

The keyboard is an abomination. Why so many developers insist on expressing themselves with their ghetto-looking creative attempts is beyond me. "Look, I just got Photoshop for Christmas and I've already learned how to over-use the bevel effect!"

Apple shouldn't allow any styling on apps.

"Mr. Jobs... build back this wall!"

Tried this out when it first released and it works like a charm. This combined with Pastebud is a nice combo.
