CTIA: QuickOffice Brings Word + Excel Editing to iPhone
Dieter’s on the floor at CTIA, and we’re hoping he’ll bring back a closer look, but in the meantime the fine folks at QuickOffice have just let us know that their new iPhone app, QuickOffice for iPhone will be available in the next few weeks, and will cost $19.99.
Quickoffice for iPhone has an intuitive user interface and supports comprehensive functionality including cut, copy and paste, font formatting, content selection and bullets within Word documents. Users can also leverage a wider keyboard to edit and create documents in landscape mode. Excel functionality includes extensive mathematical and statistical formulas.
Other useful features include file sharing capabilities via Wi-Fi desktop connectivity and access to one’s MobileMe iDisk account. Editing is done with maintaining perfect data integrity, in addition to ‘auto-save’ to ensure none of your work is lost on-the-go.
We’re guessing “next few weeks” means they’ll be using a custom-made cut/copy paste implementation under iPhone 2.x, which means we’re also guess there’ll be a new version come iPhone 3.0 launch this “summer”.
There have been other apps offering Excel editing in the paste, but Word editing is new for the iPhone (unless DocsToGo gets there first). Is it enough to get you over your document hurdle, or are there any power users still hungering for more?

I too have been waiting for Docs2Go, but this seems just as nice. Hope to review it when it comes out!
I’ve been waiting for word and excel on the iphone, but not with WiFi sync to desktop. Every WiFi sync app I’ve tried is a POS. I want wired sync to the desktop.
I have my hopes up for iWork for iPhone, but at least there are other options developing
Sounds great. But yeah, when 3.0 had it’s own copy and paste, they can do away with the tab at the bottom to copy and paste. I would only pay 19.99 if I really needed to edit things on the go. However, starting college next year, who knows… This might come in handy.
I’m curious: how is it launched? If I click on a Word or Excel doc in my email, will it launch this? Where will the documents be stored?

@ shollomon I’d say that we will see a lot more wired sync apps when 3.0 is released, as Apple has released the API for dock access, and I’m pretty sure that involves letting you use the iPod cable…
@frog: LOL!!!.. Why can’t they just wait for 3.0, they wouldn’t have to implement copy + paste at all.. or text selection. It’s there automatically in 3.0.

Well Quickoffice is from the world of Symbian really where they get away with charging silly prices for apps (eg most games being over £15 :-/)
Seems they haven’t grasped the Appstore app price point yet
My guess is they’d be using the Office Live Add-on for Office 2007.
I think we might have gotten used to all the 99 cents apps, because charging 19.99 for any very well within, if not below, average when it comes to other phones. A productive application for BB or for Windows Mobile is almost cheap.

I hate to break it to you all, but it appears that this will be a separate $19.99 app and not an update to existing users (this was “MobileFiles Pro” and was an update that was originally promised). This company will absolutely lose me as a user along with many others .

Actually I’d be happy with just correctly reading office documents. I know the iphone is already supposed to do so but almost every excel I sent it and definitely every power point has made it crash. I guess the power points from my company are too big but still… When I am the one sending it so I can read the document on the phone it is OK as I convert to pdf but usually I receive documents to read by mail and not being able to open them is really a pity. Does anyone know if the Copy/Paste function will copy from a Word doc and then paste to another screen or app (like pasting to an email or even a Craigslist posting for example)? Thanks.
Whats the easiest way to save an email attachment, word or excel, so I can open up via Quickoffice to edit…

It isn’t really referring to the topic, however my wife just walked by and seen the word blogger on the monitor. In her eyes, she actually seen booger, and asked me why I was interested in boogers. I haven’t laughed so hard in a few weeks.
