iPhone 3.0 Beta 3: Push Notification Settings

Apple Insider scored some iPhone 3.0 Beta 3 screen shots, some we’ve already seen before, but some showing off a new goodness like the Settings option for Notification (though where Apple’s usual Smiley Face w/Badge icon went to is anyone’s guess). We did a quick check, and no one we contacted had this pane visible yet, so it may only show for those actively receiving push notifications, or who have done some digging through the code.

It’s nice that Apple will apparently let users globally enable or disable the different types of Push Notification: Sounds, Alerts (text boxes), and Badges. It will be even nicer (perhaps vital) that we also get to selectively enable/disable them within individual apps as well. For example, Twitter can badge, IM can Alert, new RSS only Sound.

NOTE: “Carrier Settings” aren’t new. They have been visible on networks like Rogers since 2.0 (perhaps because Rogers subsidiary Fido also carries the iPhone in Canada?)

They also show off some evidence of battery percentage-level numeric indicators in both black (good) and red (danger!), as well as Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard-style data detectors, which we’ve seen in previous betas, but are highlighted for the Notes app.

Check out their full post for more screen shots.

  1. Would be nice to see those options for SMS and MMS messages as well. We can only hope. It would be a start to better notifications. ;)

  2. fassy says:

    Still have not checked out the 3.0 SDK yet (curse you, day job!), but, after seeing these preferences, I have a question for those who have — do push applications have control over what type of notification they send? IOW, is it just

    -> Send Alert Update

    in which case, if Alerts were turned off on the iPhone, nothing would be received, or is it more like

    -> Send Notification as Type X

    …where X could be any combination of Alert, Sound, and Badge, and, if sent as multiple types, the phone displays the most appropriate for its preferences?

  3. Sil3ntrid3r11 says:

    That is perfect and something along the lines I was hoping for! My settings: sounds and badges! The text messages box would get annoying, especially if you get actual text messages too!

  4. Muero says:

    These don’t show up on 3.0 beta 3 normally, so these must’ve been acquired the same way as the video recording screenshots. Did anyone else notice that the Carrier settings (right above Notifications) would be an addition as well?

  5. Steve says:

    “It will be even nicer (perhaps vital) that we also get to selectively enable/disable them within individual apps as well.”

    Didn’t TiPb just post an article about developers registering for individual notification types? Am I completely misunderstanding this whole thing? :shock:

  6. Rene Ritchie says:

    @Steve, no, however devs surfacing that as end-user choices remains to be seen, and is something good. i.e., not just having a dev choose what type of notification they want to send, but users being able to choose within the app what kind of notification we want to receive.

    @Muero “Carrier” setting panel has always been there for Rogers users (meaning is there in 2.x and still there in 3.0 Bx).

  7. Carolinamic says:

    Muero is right, they don’t normal so up. I’m running the beta 3 on a my 2g and I had to double check my settings after reading this post. Never the less I do like the option though. Anything that gives the user more control to customise their device is awesome. Good job apple. Know give us API s for the calender to autoupdate.

  8. Rene Ritchie says:

    @Muero: My only guess is that because, in Canada, both Rogers and Rogers’ subsidiary, Fido, offer the iPhone, we got Settings > Carrier surfaced in 2.0? (Post updated to clarify).

  9. fassy says:

    @Rene If devs can choose what type(s) of notifications to send, and users can choose what type(s) of notifications to receive, do we know what happens in a conflict yet? Obviously, user prefs should “win”, but there is no way a dev can know what my phone’s settings are currently. Can notifications degrade gracefully?

    For example, if ESPN.com sends out alerts for sports scores, but I have turned off alerts during my Super Important Business Meeting, will my iPhone show a badge update indicating a notification came in when I get out, or have I effectively disabled notifications from ESPN.com altogether?

    If the latter, I would expect some devs to start sending out duplicate notifications by type, which could get hairy to manage both on the dev and on the user side.

  10. Muero says:

    I considered the fact that the Carrier settings could appear in areas outside of AT&T’s hold, but the carrier in the screenshot is AT&T. This at least shows that this isn’t a “normal” screenshot from 3.0 beta 3; some things had to be done in the code to get this.

  11. Steve says:

    @fassy:

    That is why the term individual threw me in the previous article. Did it mean “each individual notification type” or “each individual developers’ choice(s)?”

    It would seem to only make sense if “registering” means being able to offer all three types for the end-user to choose from… and “not registering” would either mean not needing notifications, or the dev leaving it up to the global settings.

    Ahhh.. who the héll knows… :lol:

  12. frog says:

    Great. I’ll only have badges and sounds. The window thing drives me mad, I receive heaps of SMS and am always cursing the little box that pops up.

  13. MANGU says:

    Hey guys wordbook app just pushed an update that make it 3.0 ready. This might be a first?

  14. Omari James says:

    I still want the 3G switch on the main settings menu. Hmph. I won’t stop complaining about that.

  15. Pierluigi says:

    @MANGU

    Simplify Media pushed a 3.0 compatible update just two days ago.

  16. Scott says:

    Did I miss a discussion on “Fetch New Data”? – it’s not in the settings anymore based on these shots.

  17. Rob R says:

    Here’s to hoping that the push notifications can be set per application instead of globally. For example, I want sound alerts from sms and email but not twitter, espn, or facebook.
