Was finally eligible for an upgrade and decided to take advantage of the Refurb deal, as I’ve been jonesing for one since the 3Gs came out last year (darn 2 year contracts!). Purchased a 16 GB Refurb iPhone 2 days ago. Excitedly, I received the package today only to find (to my dismay) that there was no iPhone in the box. I spent mucho dinero to find a pair of earphones in an orange box.

So, I’ve spent my evening @ the AT&T store where they decided to cancel my order and have me start all over again. Square One. Then, I had to spend more of my valuable time sending a Claim Report for stolen goods to UPS. Definitely not how I imagined my “iPhone Day” to be.

This is a great deal. I bought an iPhone 3G two months ago for $99, and I haven’t had any problems with it, only the common gripes every iPhone user has and is patiently waiting for iPhone OS 3.0. Before this one, I had an LG CU500 Refurb and it lasted for 2 1/2 years and still works great, just really wanted an iphone (and at $99, it felt like I was borderline stealing it!). I’ll probably unlock it and keep it for a rainy day. I’ve had 2 great experiences with Refurb phones. I could of been one of the lucky ones, but I’m also one of the most satisfied. If u have to have the latest one, then u should wait. For me, as a college student, even $199 was uneasy for me, so I know I won’t be getting the next iPhone for some time. This deal was perfect for me. Either new I’d refurb, it’s all good.

there is no reason at this point to buy one. You’ve waited this long, wait the extra 2 or 3 months and get the new one. You will thank yourself later for being patient. These iPhones have tended to have a one year cycle so if you like having the latest thing then you need to get them during the summers to get your full year’s worth. Jim Cramer would give this a “Dont Buy!”

To clarify the 90 day warranty. You’re guaranteed at least 90 days and possibly more, but this varies by the amount of time left from the original purchase. That is, whatever time the first buyer had left. If this is under 90 days, AT&T and Apple will bump it up to 90 days. If this is more than 90 days, you inherit all remaining service days. You can check the remaining time by entering a serial number at Apple’s site.

Maybe I am overlooking this here somewhere but the article states a 90 day warranty and the apple link will tell you that Apple stands behind all refurb products with an original one year warranty. BUT.. These phones are not refurbished. That would mean that apple has once’ed over them and given them a new serial number. ATT really just makes sure they work, have all the correct software and hardware and ships. When you get one in the mystery white box it may have been sold Last august. So when you buy the 2 year apple warrant your warranty is set from the date some joe bought it. You could lose up to several months and there is no way to control the date of the phone you’re shipped. So beware when deciding. I have a great refurb 3G but there are some crossed wires and loose terms.

Clearing inventory or not, this is a pretty nice deal. I kind of doubt the next iPhone is going to be so radial a difference over the 3G iPhone that people that bought these refurbs will feel cheated.

I purchased a refurbished 8GB for $99 which arrived in perfect condition. Placing the iPhone within a similar price-point of lesser (“normal”) phones opens up the market to a different type of consumer who might not consider a $300 device.

Well there are wide reports of people who lost/stolen or damaged their phone not being able to buy a replacement at any price, as well as the more common complaints of having to pay full retail.

I wonder if these phones would be sold to that market (people who have an existing line of service but can't get their phone replaced?

Just doing the math, if a new 16g phone not-eligible-for-upgrade price is 499, and the subsided price is 299, ATT must be paying around 248 for these refurbs.

The fact that there is yet another flood of refurbs says to me the failure rate for iphones is MUCH higher than Apple or ATT has admitted. (Personal experience: 4 lines of service: 3 failed phones: within 7 months).
