I can't help but get a tad annoyed when my buddy tells me about one of his iphone's super cool features then acts like this is why the iphone is "the best" when my aging WinMo handset has the same functionality, and then some. The first time anyone makes the leap to a smartphone, they are almost always VERY impressed by it. Granted, if the OS is sufficiently complicated for the first-time user to take advantage of all of the phone's functionality (see average user with S60 or WinMo), then the phone's allure is lost. The iphone has made smartphones very approachable to those that are otherwise tech illiterate. Combine this blue ocean market (e.g. Wii vs. PS3 or Xbox) with an omnipresent marketing campaign and you get a huge success. </p> <p>The iphone will stay a best seller, but there will be plenty of other phones that will be considered far superior as competing OSes get more and more refined and offer much better specs (HD recording, high end cameras, projectors, keyboards with e-ink integration, etc.) </p> <p>In the end, we will all win as catalysts like the iphone, WebOS and Android will continue to drive better offerings for less cash.</p> I think many people overlook that the vast majority of iphone owners are first-time smartphone owners. After that I decided never to get an iPhone again and purchased nokia e90 which had a full qwerty keyboard and 800x200 screen resulorion, fast CPU and multitasking. Which I couldn't use after getting used to my iPhone. Sending an email in my old e90 was a horrible experience even with using the large keyboard and screen. And likewise for all other functions HORRIBLE.</p> <p>I sold my e90, got another iPhone 2g and 3g later on. How many times have you heard “I would never buy another …” or “I will never shop there again”?

People remember bad consumer experiences, and they hold it against the company for a long time – sometimes forever. They are Reverse-Suckers.

While the iPhone is the coolest “portable computing device” I have had, its not by any means the best phone I’ve had. I’ve had WAY more problems with it than any of my prior phones.

More importantly, Apple’s uncommunicative, un-user friendly, and controlling nature has convinced me I will never buy any OTHER Apple product.

(Other is emphasized above to reflect the fact that I might someday upgrade my iPhone to a later model. Admittedly, I’m addicted. However if the Pre or the Android 3.0 are cooler I will be gone from Apple’s door for good.)

Sure others copy the iPhone. Its the first-est with the most-est. And to date, others don’t quite measure up.

But will that hold?

A good 40% of them don't even have computers. They have no idea that the iPhone is more than the apps that came installed. </p> <p>Having a jailbroken 3G they are astounded when they see mine. So I'd have to say 60 to 75% of iPhone users are buying the iPhone solely on branding, and are not smarter than the phone. </p> <p>As for compairing the iPhone and instinct that is a joke. A not even funny joke. Find an instinct and try to visit the official sprint instinct web page. It can not even display the page correctly, unless Sprint has gone back and changed it to be veiwable on the instict. In all aspects but mobile tv the iPhone wins hands down.
