Analyst Rumormongering: No New iPhone at WWDC? iPhone “Family” at Special Summer Event?

Business Insider is quoting Piper analyst Gene Munster as saying:

No New iPhones [at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference]. As indicated in today’s press release, we believe Apple will focus on the new version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard at WWDC. While some investors may be expecting Apple to launch redesigned iPhones at WWDC, we do not anticipate the launch in early June. Rather, we expect Apple to host a special event in late June or early July to launch a family of iPhones. We continue to expect multiple models, possibly a high-end iPhone with improved specs from the current version and a low-end version with lower capacity and fewer features along with a reduced pricing plan. Such a model could also be used in Apple’s launch of the iPhone into China as soon as the end of summer ’09.

Analysts are about as accurate as weathermen when it comes to predictions one month out, so take this with the usual Mac Pro sized grain of salt. Apple has used the last two WWDC events to showcase the iPhone, and introduced the iPhone 3G and MobileMe at WWDC 2008. If they stick to pattern, we should see an update on iPhone 3.0, the next generation iPhone, and perhaps a MobileMe refresh at WWDC 2009.

However, WWDC being an developer-focused event, it’s not impossible Apple will focus on their Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard and iPhone OS 3.0 exclusively, leaving the hardware for a sexier consumer event later in the month.

As to a family of iPhones, we still don’t see Apple breaking the software platform, which means a low end iPhone could only be a low-storage iPhone 3G (8GB?) at $99?, with the next generation unit (at 16GB and 32GB, along with other new features) taking the established $199 and $299 positions.

  1. rpv says:

    please no more wait!!! :)

  2. Jeffdc5 says:

I see them keeping the current 3g as the “Nano” and releasing a new version as the pro type device

  3. Omari James says:

I want it late June, ASAP. I have an iPhone 3G. I remember how bad i couldn’t wait till I could get it. I sorta feel your ( non iphone owners ) pain.

I wanna see if it has that much over the 3G. I know it will definitely have 32gb ( which I need right now ).

  4. icebike says:

    So Omari:

What you going to do with your 3G? Is your contract paid off? You going to pay full price, or add a line of service and give the 3G to someone?

These new phones are coming out when the 3G has only been out a year, and as such there are a lot of people stuck with a half paid contract.

I don’t need the storage, (current phone way less than half full), but the newer features and hardware might be nice. But I don’t see me paying 500 bucks for another carrier locked phone.

  5. A purple-ish Colour says:

I’ll be keeping my 3G until end of three year term. Just to much to spend on a Smartphone every year! And just think what I’ll be able to upgrade to after another couple of generations. Plus I’ll be getting 3.0 anyway so might as well wait.

  6. sting7k says:

I could see this happening. But was there a new version of OS X in 2007 as well? Maybe now with that coming the iPhone hardware will need a back seat.

  7. freiteez says:

I agree with Jeffdc5. The 3g isnt that bad, if they came out with an updated iphone(which is obvious they will) the 3g can play as the $99 version just so people get their foot in the door of iphone. I know a lot of people still complaining about the price and at $99 theres no reason not to have one.

I just hope they announce this at WWDC, but if not, I can wait :) would rather have Steve Jobs talk about iphone anyway.

  8. The Reptile says:

Why can’t Apple focus on both? WWDC stands for ‘World Wide Developer’s Conference’ doesn’t it? Wouldn’t it make sense to do a big presentation on Snow Leopard AND finish off with the features in 3.0 that we haven’t seen yet? It’s the right audience since 1) Mobile Apps are in and 2) once they’re on the iPhone platform they can do some especially nice things on the Mac. Rene is right, analysts are good at rumor but horrible at strategy.

  9. Tunnelrunner says:

I’d love to see a new phone this summer but in the event there WON’T be any new hardware I’ll still be happy because 3.0 is going to unleash the full potential of the iPhone. Either way…new iPhone or not, we all win. :D

  10. TosaDeac says:

I am really hopeful for a new and even better iPhone for myself (to upgrade from a 2G model) but would be open to “iPhone-lite” for my wife since she is not as techno-needy as I am. Whether this happens at the WWDC or later in the summer I’ll be fine as long as they release the 3.0 Os upgrade sooner so I can at least enjoy some of that goodness right away.

  11. oneAwake says:

“Rumormongering”, isn’t that a bit hypocritical? Especially since this blog has been posting articles about the alleged “new iphone” which has been based on nothing but rumors. I have heard myself that there will be no new iphone, that the upcoming WWDC will address 3.0. Apple is sucking in Apple-lover after Apple-lover, with it’s App-store. Why would Apple release a new product when it’s current product (the iphone) supports the nest egg?… The App-store!

  12. Ssilly says:

I hope there’s a new iPhone so I can give this iPhone 3g to my girlfriend recently started to look for a smartphone I had the the blackberry curve which was okay then had the blackberry storm whiched sucked a** and then I found the iPhone and let me tell you I love it, so I want the new iPhone hope it come out can’t wait

  13. sil3ntrid3r11 says:

This isn’t too surprising that they would or anyone else would say this. Its like why would apple say in their press release that they are secretly gonna bring Steve Jobs out for a guest appearance. And why would apple disclose that they are going to release a new iPhone? It makes perfect sense that none of that information would be officially stated, so i think that speculating on what they did say in their press release is not very substantial. I still feel very confident that we will see new hardware announced at WWDC, don’t forget the schiller sanctioned “June time line”

    -@sil3ntrid3r11

  14. icebike says:

    @Sil3:

And why would apple disclose that they are going to release a new iPhone?

    Why wouldn’t they?

Contrary to Apple’s super paranoid mind set, most companies announce well in advance. Intel, Microsoft, Chevy, RedHat, Dell, HP…

The only reason NOT to pre-announce is if you think you might not have problems meeting the schedule, OR if you want to build up the Cult of The Steve.

  15. sil3ntrid3r11 says:

@icebike Apple only pre-announced the original iPhone because they didnt want the FCC to do it for them. They didnt pre-announce the 3G * prior to WWDC 08*, nor the MacBook Air, nor new iPods or desktops, its not Apple’s style and they don’t have the same values as ” Intel, Microsoft, Chevy, RedHat, Dell, HP” etc. Apple hearts surprises and secrets..

  16. sil3ntrid3r11 says:

but for the original iPhone it could be considered they didnt pre-announce it because prior to announcing it, they didnt announce it.. still you will never get apple to admit that there will be a new iPhone until, like rene says, steve or schiller pulls it out of their pocket.. and i prefer the former :]

  17. Jojo says:

Well I cant wait for the New Gen iphone because im stuck with the very first one lol…i had no urgency to upgrade to the 3G since i dont mind the edge speed. But now since the 3.0 software is coming out and the new iphone with improved storage, camera, MMS, and the new turn by turn gps direction im SOLD!! i really think apple will come out with a brand new, and different iphone every 2-3 years with other “new iphones” in between with minor updates… Smart way to make $ isnt it apple?

  18. Daje says:

Whatever it is I’m going to get it.

  19. Al says:

Icebike, if you look at the smartphone that have come out recently like the Instinct, Storm, and Pre (not out yet) it is obvious that Apple keeps their secrets because everyone wants to copy their superior designs. Obviously the hype factor is working on you if you’re checking a tech blog for iPhone nuggets prior to the release!

  20. Chobbs says:

it never ocurred to me that perhaps there would not be a new iPhone at the WWDC. I guess I needed to be reminded that everything I have heard about a new model has been pure speculation. Not one stitch of evidence. Without that reminder I would have been blindsided if there were indeed no new phone.

I have the first gen phone, which I love, but I’m not feeling love for having to wait for pages to load when I am away from wifi. I really hated the plastic apple decided to go with for the 3g.

I also need to be reminded that I paid 600$ for this phone. It is ok to own it for a couple of years.

That said, if there is a new phone… Who cares how much I paid for this one or how much the new one is! I’m getting it!

  21. Blake 2 says:

Same here Chobbs. Can’t wait till WWDC!

  22. icebike says:

    @Al, and all…

I believe Apple’s tendency to keep things very secret are a personal paranoia of Jobs.

It doesn’t make business sense to keep quiet once you are in manufacturing and assured of being able to meet the release date. In fact, announcing well in advance can fore-stall sales of competitors, build up demand for the the actual launch. Yes, you hurt your own legacy sales as well, but those can be released later as loss-leaders.

Its borderline illegal to announce and then NOT release. (Microsoft got in a lot of trouble for that), but meeting release dates removes all risk of that.

No, this secrecy is not backed by a strong business case, but rather a somewhat warped personality. It might make sense for the first edition of a new product, but not for an incremental improvement for release 3.

Chevy VOLT won’t be out for a year. But they are letting reporters drive it on the test track today.

  23. brandon says:

sorry about that last post, i was prematurely excited… it happens quite often. good thing i like one night stands (with my hand).

anyway, i write for iPhoneNova (dot) com and have always been heavily invested in apple. What they do best is they sandbag- they plant rumor seeds like johhny apple did… but with apple rumors… not apple seeds. they want you to think that they wont be doing a new release and then when they do their stock soars! like a beautiful white dove flapping its love filled wings in an archadia drowsy with sunshine.

dont read our blogs if you get offended easily… definitely read them if you get offended easily.

  24. SpiceRak2 says:

    @icebike

I agree. And it is not uncommon for companies to have strategic “leaks” regarding new product as it has an impact on stock value.

  25. Rogers rep says:

As a iphone technical support rep for Rogers, with no incentive for sales, I can safely say there is no new iPhone hardware coming with 3.0, simply new software.

I really hate when these rumors get out of control, as people will be getting there hopes up, the start cursing apple when they don’t get new hardware, when the current is amazing as it is.

  26. icebike says:

As a iphone technical support rep for Rogers, with no incentive for sales, I can safely say there is no new iPhone hardware coming with 3.0, simply new software.

Nobody said there would be a new phone released WITH software release 3.0.

But I doubt that a tech support rep, working for a different company, in a different country, would be the first to know when a new piece of hardware was to be released. No disrespect intended….

  27. oneAwake says:

    @ Rogers rep

Exactly, it’s sad that so many “Apple” fans are fooled. One only needs to look at all the recent/current iphone commercials, everything is about the “app-store.”

  28. I think there’s no different if the new iphone is presented at WWDC or later in June on a special event. Either way it’s not availaible until july.

  29. thekevinmonster says:

So how much money do blogs like TIPB make when they spread rumors? Analysts are paid to do it. If you’re not getting paid to do it, stby!

(I hate these analyst posts. “Steve Jobs is never returning and Apple is rebirthing The Newton as an iTablet, using the same name. In other news, Apple is also in talks to buy Twitter and Google and will be licensing OS X for use on any Intel-compatible computer.” Oh really? Is that the cocaine talking, Mr. Analyst?)

  30. Rogers rep says:

    @ icebike

We do get first hand access to what’s happening with the iPhone, if there were new hardware coming out, with or without the 3.0 launch,, we would know by now.

  31. tech freak says:

Well if there is a new iPhone and they won’t announce it at the wwdc it will not be smart move!

    1. Palm pre will be coming out!

    2. Y spend time with an other conference while u can get everything out of the way at once?

    3. If they don’t announce pretty soon I’ll get the pre I’m getting bored of 3g. ( lack of system memory!!!)

  32. Mr. Hi-Definition says:

I really hope this isn’t true. I don’t think it would be a wise move for Apple not to launch an iPhone this year. I really do hope that Apple goes unibody like they did with their MacBook line and go back to the black instead of the crome with the iPhone 3G.

  33. icebike says:

    @Rogers Rep:

I’m book marking this in my “Famous Last Words” folder.
