Apple iPhone Activation Offline on Sunday, May 31?

TiPb just received a tip from inside one of Apple's carrier partners on the memo reproduced below. We can't verify it but are running it just in case anyone notices any problems and comes looking for potential causes.
Our tipster thought Apple might be using the downtime to prep for some iPhone 3.0 and next-generation iPhone hardware goodness. We have no way of verifying that either, of course, but with under 10 days to WWDC 2009, nothing -- fact or fiction -- surprises us anymore...
On Sunday evening May 31 / Monday June 1, in some time zones Apple will perform maintenance on the servers responsible for all iPhone activations.
This is a planned maintenance that begins at 8:00 p.m. and ends at 11:00 p.m., United States Pacific time.
During the scheduled downtime, attempts to activate a new iPhone will result in iTunes displaying a message that says activations are currently unavailable.
If a customer reports this as a problem please explain that:
Nothing is wrong with iTunes or the customer's iPhone.
This is a scheduled downtime for system maintenance.
The iTunes Store, App Store, MobieMe, and www.apple.com are not affected.
Per the message in iTunes, the customer should try connecting again after the maintenance period has ended."

This happened to me when I first bought the original iPhone. It was down for a full night though - painful to have your new phone in front of you and not be able to use it...
this reminds me of all of the people trying to activate their 3G's on day one when the system couldn't handle it. Those of us who waited in line for 8 hours and got there first didn't have that issue though
Nice, except MobileMe is spelled wrong. Check your spelling before saying it is real.
One feature on 3.0 that they left out that would be nice, a way to lock safari, mail, messages etc. from automatically going sideways when your laying in the bed and browsing and want those apps to stay upright
Haha I was getting frustrated with that last night while laying in bed checking this very website.
I hope they are doing this to strengthen the servers so that nothing like last year happens on the release date...
This sucks. Having trouble with my recent update to 2.2.1. Decided to restore, only to be unable to activate. Went from no email to NO PHONE!!!
someone messed with my phone and it needed to be restored ... went through the restoration steps, but activation is failing as of about 8:53pm (PST) on May 31, 2009. This is what I get in iTunes:
Device activations are unavailable at this time. We're sorry, but we are unable to process any new activations at this time. Please disconnect your phone and try again later.
I was in my local Apple Store yesterday about 2pm EST and there whole system was down . The Mac Genius I talked too said that the local phone company was updateding the telephone network ? Maybe adding more lines for more bandwith to handle all the new Iphone purchases .
hey there, this could possibly be little offtopic, but i'm hosting my website on hostgator and they will suspend my hosting in 4days, so i would like to ask you which hosting do you use or recommend?
I read a ton of blogs recently and yours is one particular of the best. I enjoy studying your posts - clear and very well written. Your page goes straight to my bookmarks. I obtained some good inspirational thoughts after reading it.
