i beleive June 8th will be it, and to Mike A. when they explain summer they sure may not mean june, perhaps july like you said, but if they do that they also have another iphone to release at well, and the fact that 3.0 will only be for 3g phones and not 2g makes it exceptional to announce something such as a new iphone around the same time as a software release, and with that said we definatly are not in the same money market we we're a year ago so my predictions are hopefully so no one in the apple corps are killed or anything.

2G is either taken off sales or Lowered to a very minimal price range

@Andre: No, you should not switch. You have a relatively new phone, be happy with it. It's a phone, its purpose in life is to make phone calls. Can the Storm do that? If yes, get your use out of it.

The reason they dropped iTunes 8.2 already is because 3.0 will be coming out very soon, if not next week. It was their subtle way of increasing hype for a product without them having to say anything at all. They know that we know 8.2 has support for 3.0 and they know that we will all be talking like this. To drop iTunes on us like that without saying anything only spreads publicity by word of mouth - costing them absolutely nothing in advertising dollars.

i think it only logical if they release the 3.0 next week. that allows us to all like it, and want the new iphone that has a better camera for mms, etc. i don't believe they are coming out with a new iphone though. i have connections that say no. i could be wrong, but they have no real reason to. it wouldn't be that much different. i personally do not want a compass, etc. i'd like the camera though, but i just got a new iphone about 3 weeks ago. my second one. so i don't know that i'd be up for changing. it's kinda pointless. but also ATT changed their iphone upgrade rules. it costs more now. when i bought mine, i had to fight with them because i'm a premier customer.

I find it funny, those that bash people for voicing their opinion to the topic at hand. Especially, when the entire post was asking what everyone thought. Let those speak there minds, poking at idiotic posts on the other hand, now that is great too.

But c'mon guys, weither it comes out next week or in July, the software that is, you're gonna get it and you're gonna love it. As for tentative dates, be patient we'll hear something soon. Just think if it is July, its not that far away. As that one post said, its in october, even if it was a joke... it could be. We don't know yet. We can guess, we've been wrong before, it would suck, but what are ya gonna do about it.

Anyway, as a person whos been buying apple products for nearly 20 something years, I think Icebikes predictions are accurate. Just wait, and enjoy it will be that much better!

I doesn't benefit Apple to release a phone at the same time as the software this year. The current phone already has the ability to use video and the camera actually is a 3 mega pixel camera that has just been locked as a 2 mega pixel. Software fixes both. With talks going on with Verizon which Verizon has confirmed, it benefits Apple to wait and make that phone the new release as they will get s kickback from Verizon for new subscribers that switch. The release of the 3.0 software is slated for June 8th and there is no way they can get a phone released the same date at this point (rumors would be a lot more than they are). The big secret coming at release is probably a tablet of some sort as Apple ordered production of 9 inch multi-touch screens and Best Buy has an order for 200,000 of this new device. Wonder if it will be called the iPad.

I think firmware 3.0 should be release ASAP. Not only because I'm greedy, and people made good points before me. But if they released it let's say on the 8th, Apple WILL make more money! And help sell off the extra 3G's. In this field, people will start buying the 3G just for the free downloadable firmware, even if they KNOW a new phone is comeing out. Or another option, sell advanced copies. Free July 17th. Who of us would not buy it now for $10? Regardless what they do, I WANT IT NOW!

The reason why Apple might release the OS and the new iPhone on the same day is that they might think "If we let the OS go now people might not want to trade in their old phones for the new one when it comes out, or just buy a used 3G that is able to do the same stuff as iPhone 3.0 with slightly less memory and half the price!"

And also October 8th, and December 25th. We are not interested in all the days it will be out, only the FIRST day.

Besides, if there is a pattern, and it holds true again, OS 3.1 or 3.2 will be out by October.

I think it's a little funny that a lot of people are strung up on the July 17th date. That was just a rumor as is everything else. Also, the June announce/July release. That only happened once. That pattern was not the same for the original iPhone, so why would one expect the same from this year? It could be totally different and revert to how they did it at the end of June originally. I think they will do it two year anniversary style and go with end of June. ALL IN.

if anything im sure that Apple and AT&T are prepared for the the massive amounts of activations they'll have to deal with the first day.

maybe just to be safe Apple should stager the phones release country by country so we don't have the entire world trying to activate their phones at the same time and have another iTunes crash

as a side note, I waited 4+ days to go out and get mine and wound up waiting a month (like many others) for my black 16 gig iPhone to ship to the AT&T store. . . for new buyers sakes i hope Apple is prepared for the volume of units they will need to have ready to be shipped. It was a nightmare waiting but i was somewhat patient and it was well worth it.

Maybe the release of iTunes 8.2 has less to do with an early release of OS 3.0 than we think. Each time there is an update to iTunes, it takes much longer than a week for the bulk of customers to complete the change. Apple knows this already.

I have the original iPhone and I would love to have the latest version, sooner than later, but projected release dates aside, I may have to hang onto my phone and be satisfied with OS 3.0 if the price of the new phone is too high. That's my big fear this late in the game. I can't justify paying $300-400 for a new phone at this time, and I don't want an iPhone with less features to save some bucks.

So...bring on 3.0! I'll work with that until my budget puts me in line for the new phone.

I think that the Apple should have the software upgrade issues on different days to avoid any server overload issues. I am dying for the MMS feature. Will video be coming soon? It's time. Love the iPhone but we need these improvements.

Probably grist for a different mill, perhaps the forums.

But I too see switches to Edge, but haven't had one dropped call in the last 3 months. The switch to Edge is seamless with no disruption. That's the way its supposed to be, and I don't consider this a flaw.

As for why the shift to edge, I don't know, perhaps the network detects you are doing nothing but talking and decides you don't need to be connected to 3G for that.

I am all for an early release, except I just have been following this company to long to think that they will stray from what they said. I agree, that they do make back end money from ATT, but they still want to sell phones.

Can I ask a quick of topic question to everyone? Who thinks that the current iPhone 3g as some kind of technical flaw with properly switching between edge and 3g networks? I live in NY and we have some of the best coverage, yet I still drop calls in perfect service areas, I still switch to edge for no reason in a perfectly strong 3g area.

I mean I would upgrade just knowing that the new radio on the yet to be announced iPhone is better, plus the extra CPU speed and RAM bump is HUGE. Its just going to make the phone run sooooo much better.

I sure hope your right. I really do believe that it will be available on the 8th. Why would Apple risk the overload, it will be chaos enough without the added sales of the new model. I don't think, even if they release os 3.0 early, their will be no registration issues.

Last year when os 2.0 was announced, the market share wasn't a fifth of what it is today. Having tens of millions of phones hitting apple server almost simoltaniously will be a nightmare, even for mighty Apple.

Lets all hope their smart about this.

I have to point out that Apple will make a LOT of money from people who have one year left on their contract. There is a revenue sharing agreement between ATT and Apple that goes beyond the wholesale bulk purchase price that ATT paid for the phone. This is why you don't get charged for upgrading you iPhone, but you do get charged for your Touch.

Also those phones still buy Apps and Music.

I'm not so sure Apple actually WANTs all 17million iPhone users to have to shell out AGAIN for new features in the software. This would piss a lot of customers off. If they did, they would freeze first and second gen phones at 2.2.1 (claiming some hardware requirement) and only provide 3.0 to version 3 phones.

So I still suspect Apple will try to get the upgraders satisfied ahead of time to prevent server overload.

Obviously Apple can do anything they want, they could drop the OS 3.0 on Friday or Saturday to say F you to Palm. I dont think they will, I think that they know that the Palm soon to be PRE-historic hysteria will die down very soon after launch and be an after thought and they will stick to their current plans.

Like I said in my previous post, Apple is an attention to detail company and if say Summer that means June 21st or later, not sooner. I like many of you wish that Apple would drop the update tonight. I would still line up in July when the new phone is released to get it, because im a fanboy.

The reality is if they drop 3.0 early it will delay current iphone users in purchasing new hardware for some amount of time and they dont want that.

Software and hardware releases will be announced on the same day at the same event. Apple will release the software update that week if not that day. The new hardware will be available for order that day, and ship within a month, but more likely within a week or two (maybe even silently shipping sooner than promised). It probably won't be easy to get one in your hand until a few days after the software has been out and died down a smidge. Save the servers the load, and to extend the news influx so both the software and then the hardware get the air time.

Shipping the software before the hardware won't harm the hardware sales in any significant amount. It will bring smiles to those who didn't want to upgrade hardware in this economy, and give something for the upgraders to enjoy before the new hardware arrives. New purchasers have been waiting a while anyway. The excitement of a few more days wait for something cutting edge is something they can handle, and possibly enjoy with some level of childish mirth.

The folks who say a release before the Pre make a good point. They are supported by the iTunes release and updated apps with 3.0 compatibility (just starting to hit). I think that's the early part of the range with the late date being the day after WWDC. The new iPhone will come in July as usual. This makes news twice, smooths out the server load and more importantly gives Apple a more gradual ramp up of Push Notifications (not all iPhone users will load versus all 3rd generations having it by default).

I think it Is important to remember that the networks (AT&T) probably haven't tested the new features (MMS) on a wide scale (probably would have leaked if they did) so it's unlikely 3.0 will drop before this happens. Therefore, I think they'll announce a July release date at WWDC.

I would rather see the release of 3.0 before the new hardware. I'm gonna pretty much just copy and paste all the applications i have in my current iPhone across to the new one anyway, but at least with the software ahead of time i'll know if there's any surprises waiting for me in apps i use all the time.

This is assuming o2 in the Uk lets their current iPhone users upgrade early to the new iPhone like last year. If they dont then my concern is irrelevant, i'll have the new software 3 months before the phone anyway

I'm no marketing guru, but perhaps Apple should (and will?) consider releasing OS 3.0 on the 2-year contract renewal date (2 years from the original iPhone release..I can't remember the exact date). Most of us think the new hardware won't be released until mid July or later, which leaves a gap between the contract renewal date and the release. The new OS might be a good way to keep those users loyal and to dissuade them from going for the Pre or other smartphone that has the core features (copy/paste, etc) that the existing hardware lacks.

Yeah, the iTunes 8.2 released exactly a week before WWDC is suspicious. Macs check automatically for new software once a week, right? That would mean most users have 8.2 ready to go by the time WWDC starts. I doubt that's a coincidence.

Another problem occurs with the release of an iphone HD. A great name btw for a new model. But the problem with that is that they'd have to give developers make a second version of their app. A 480x320 and an n x n size and 1 month before release is just crazy and apple wouldn't make us wait over a month. (I at least hope not) Another possibility is to have the iPhone either change the actual pixel size like a computer does OR make a feature in the OS that "automagically" changes the game size (pixel-wise). The only problem with the first option is that changing the pixel size like on a computer takes a few (10-15) seconds of wait. Not good for simple IM apps or whatever. I like the first solution but apple should make an August or September deadline (or longer for more complex apps) for the developer to submit a revised version or have the app temporarily suspended or something. But is there a difference that you can see between 480 and 720p on a screen this small? Cause I have 20/13 vision and I can see every single pixel on this thing from a regular typing/playing distance and boy is it annoying. It seems really low quality. So... Please send feedback hopefully to all the points above (including the first ones that you might have forgotten about by now)

Apple is a detail oriented company. Since they previewed 3.0, they have said it will be released in the summer. June 8th is not the summer, so we have at least 2 weeks after WWDC before we see it in my opinion.

It is interesting that they dropped iTunes 8.2 on us this early, I thought it would have been after WWDC. I think they will release both 3.0 and the new iPhone at the same time because they want people to buy new phones, they don't want people that still have 1 year left on their contracts, like many of us iPhone 3g owners do to play with a new OS for a few weeks before the new phone is released and decide to hold out upgrading to the new hardware.

The crash occured last year because of iPhone 2.0 being released, the new iphone activation AND (this is the kicker) they updated iTunes all on the same day. This year Apple at least was smart enough to update iTunes ahead of time. They won't release 3.0 ahead of the new iPhone. They want to keep current iPhone users hungry for something new til July 17th... thus causing them to get in line at 5am. Trust me. I know. I'll be in that line.

I agree with icebike, release 3.0 OS to all current iPhones at least a few days ahead of the new hardware. All those new activations will bring iTunes down for sure. Downloads for the OS will crawl (file will be ~250MB I assume), iTunes will freeze, and us veterans could be left with a non-working phone for awhile if things go wrong.

With the release of the Palm Pre I think Apple will break trend and open the 3.0 flood gates just so they can stomp out any fire the Pre may bring. That would be the best PR move they could do. If they give Palm sum room on the hype they may lose iPhone buyers!

I just wonder if there is something in the OS 3.0 that would give away key new features of the new iPhone. That might drive them to not issue the OS before the hardware.

If the question is whether to delay the 3.0 release until after the device announcement, I say no. Been running the beta, and it's damned solid for what I've been doing -- I forced myself to use it on my regular daily device to be sure I was honestly testing the beta.

Either way, the new device will almost certain /ship/ with 3.0. So why /not/ release the software update before or concurrently with the new device? I'm entirely not understanding the point of the question.

There isn't any reason to hold the OS for the device, unless there are late QA issues to resolve -- who wants immediate patches for new hardware (again, again, again)? So let OS ship when it is ready, even if that is concurrent with the new device. QED

Last year was a different issue though. As far as I understand it, the problem wasn't first gen users not being able to upgrade to 2.0, but new iPhone 3G user activating. MobileMe was it's own issue as well that just made the PR worse.

So now there is no MobileMe or App store launch, so the issue they need to worry about is renting some activation servers for launch day.

It's highly doubtful they'll have new iPhones on sale by the WWDC date. There's been no rumors about shipments. I think it will be July or August before they are ready.

That said, I think they definitely have to release 3.0 firmware on the WWDC date, or at least soon after.

I hope that whatever they do, it will not delay the release of the new iPhone. I have an old BB8310, and while I am truly addicted to my Crackberry, I am thinking I am ready for some trendy iPhone love....so staged or simultaneous, just get it out already...

Apple is planning to release the OS 3.0 update and new iPhone on the same day because its how they market. Come July 17th I would love to enjoy the new software but then again its like I'm being forced to get the new iPhone because it'll be right in front of me. I wish they could release the update June 8th so we can all be bedazzled by the many new features we have. and then have the new iPhone come out on that expected July 17th. What do you think about this?

Honestly I think that the software update shouldn't have anything to do with the next release of the next phone. These features are absolutely needed to compete in this market. Current iPhone users have been suffering without basic functionality for too long. The first iPhone is gonna lose out on some features and the iPhone 3g is gonna lose some features that the next iPhone will have so what's the point. If they decided to wait until 2010 to release another phone don't they think we need those features. They are not giving us gifts. They put out a device that lacked core features. Don't get me wrong I love my 3g but damn let's be honest these features are not part of a revolution. They are basic. Period.
