How to: Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 3.0 - Windows PC redsn0w Edition
Disclaimer - Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing. This will NOT work with iPhone 3GS.
There has been a lot of buzz going on in the forums regarding jailbreaking the iPhone 3.0 software lately, and a lot of questions to go along with it!. Today we’re going to take a deeper look at the exact steps you have to take to get your iPhone 3G with the 3.0 software, jailbroken on your Windows PC machine.
Let’s get started, after the jump!
Get the tools
First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you’re not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes.
All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your PC. Next you will need to download the following files:
Jailbreak Process
Now double click on the redsn0w file you just download to open the redsn0w application. You will then be prompted to select the 3.0 IPSW file you downloaded. Do as instructed now. Once it is successfully identified press next to continue.
Now you will have to select whether you'd like Cydia, Icy, or both installed on your phone. You must install at least one of them. Make sure your choices are checked and press next.
Next you will be connecting your iPhone 3G to your PC. Once your device is connected, hold the power button until the "Slide to Power Off" appears - then slide to power it off. Press next.
Redsn0w will not put your iPhone 3G into DFU mode. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions exactly. Start by holding down the power button for 3 seconds.
Hold down both both the power button as well as the home button for 10 seconds.
Finally release the power button while continuing to hold the home button down until redsn0w detects your iPhone 3G.
The device will now reboot once it is detected by redsn0w.
Redsn0w will now begin the process of uploading the new ramdisk. Once this is complete you will be notified that the jailbreak process is complete. Click the Finish button.
Even though redsn0w completed it's process your iPhone will still be finishing up. This can take up to 5 minutes. Be patient, when it's done you will have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with Cydia/Icy on the SpringBoard.
Unlocking Process
Now if you are looking to unlock your iPhone follow these steps below.
If you are unlocking for T-Mobile USA be sure to disable 3G.
Run Cydia or Icy
Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”.
Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w.
Reboot your iPhone 3G.
Enjoy your freshly unlocked iPhone 3G running the 3.0 software!

in order to use the applications from cydia do i have to download winterboard or anything else. if so, when can i get that from or how do i install it?
I've tried twice to do this and everytime it stops working, and a "redsnow has stopped working" icon appears giving me the choice of shutting down or finding a solution online.
Any advice would be great!
Every time I go to download the 3.0 firmware for the iPhone 3G I get some zip file, which when opened contains a bunch of .dmg files and an assortment of other random files...none of which are the ipsw. I've downloaded/saved the files from numerous sources so I have no idea what the problem is. If it helps, I'm on a PC running Windows XP. Please help!

why is my post beign deleted? My iphone doesnt install.. it hangs and it is never uploaded... does this not work on 1st gen iphones?
I unlocked my my iPhone with Cydia and ultrasn0w. I am able to use my phone in India, but I am not able to send SMS, can some one please help.
I'm on Windows XP pro SP3, iPod Touch 2G with OS 3.0, Redsn0w 0.7.2. During the jailbreak operation, redsn0w successfully identify the 3.0 firmware, then I click next, Dialogue box appear: "Preparing Jailbreak data, connecting to sever" Then redsn0w gone (Disappear!).
I repeat around 100 times, it still the same. I try with another PC it still the same. Before I'm successfully jailbreak iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G. but now fail to do so..! Please help!

Everyone having trouble finding ULTRASNOW.. Spell it correctly u l t r a s n 0(this is a Zero)w. Everyone having issues with “error. Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2).” Rejailbreak and only install cydia. if you install both icy and cydia their is a file that gets bashed and causes both to fail. I fixed my iphone by rejailbreaking and only loading cydia, after i updated all of cydia, i loaded ICY from cydia
Hey I recently jailbroke my 3G 3.0 iphone and i have the cydia icon and was able to use the ultra snow. the problem im having is the fact that i am unable to connect to the internet via 3G/E ..keeps giving me a error message saying.. "you must have a cellular data plan to use this service.. any hints ?

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G but when I ran Cydia for the 1st time. I did the complete upgrade, but it failed and I cannot install anything.

Hi I have a doubt what happen if I unlock & jailbreak my iphone in a pc can I use it in my mac or what? I now that there's different firwares for mac and pc but can I unlock & jailbreak an iphone in a pc to be use in a MAC?
When I jailbroke my iPhone I chose Icy instead of Cydia, wrong choice I couldn't get anything to work right. I'm going to try an jailbreak it again but this time I'm only going to install only Cydia see if that works.

1ST QUESTION: If I unlock my iphone 3g with tmobile, what kinda data plan would i need ??
2ND QUESTION: After unlocking would i be able to go back to normal like using att again??
As a couple of people have reported, redsn0w crashes in Windows 7 RC1 if you try to install Icy. Leave that box unchecked (you may install Cydia) and all is well.
Hey guys.. You mentioned before that for the Iphone 2G it is the same process for jailbreaking it but with a different IPSW.. Which IPSW should I use after I have already update the Iphone 2G to 3.0..

HUGE problems.. Whenever i get to the downloading jailbreak data (the last step with the picture of the green arrow and hard drive) it just has that screen and the loading icon and it doesnt do anything.. I've tried it 5 times and had to restore it every time! Pleas help!

WOW... i was a skeptick and Did not want to jepordiz my Iphone. but I gave it a shot... it works... Its awesome.. REMEMBER when you are in the steps abouve Hold the the Home botton as long as the Jailbreaking sofware is running it could take longer then 25 sec. so hold the dame button other wise u will get an Windows ERROR message.

By the way ICY is more stable and easy to use app than Cydia. People who have used ICY will notice that difference

Even after inserting the SIM Card if you are still getting "NO SERVICE" then pls check if u have the same problem in a different phone. Sometimes even if the signal is not detected due to signal coverage reception problem u would get "NO SERVICE".
I have very good signal and i changed the simto other pgones work normaly..but only in my iphone no service
If 3G or Edge still aren’t working, then you probably might not have officially activated them through carrier, so instead of needing to do that, try setting your Data Roaming Options to On, which helps bypass this problem, since it forces the phone to connect to “roaming” facilities such as 3G.
To do that go to your Settings>General>Network and make sure you have both 3G Enabled and Data Roaming set to On.
Looks like U have JAILBROKEN the iphone but have UNLOCKED the iphone.
Remember JAILBREAKING is differnt and UNLOCKING is different.
Pardon me I meant YOU might have NOT UNLOCKED the iphone
In this WebSIte i see that in the SECOND Screen shot of the JAILBREAKING Process there is no "unlock" option under install Cydia and Install ICY. the options should be as below install Cydia Install Icy Unlock

Did u make sure you were using the correct .ipsw (if ur iphone is 2G then use 2G version and if ur Iphone is 3G download 3G version) Try restoring the phone to 2.2.1 and then update to OS 3.0 using iTunes V 8.2 and then jailbreak OS 3.0 with redsn0w 0.72

Looks like u have Jialbroken the iphone successfully but u have NOT UNLOCKED it.
U will get an option to "Unlock" in redsn0w while choosing to install cydia or icy and UNLOCK

You should try in Windows XP SP2 (not SP3). It will work

I have downloaded redsn0w but my laptop is trying to open it in itunes which it will not, so i cannot open redsn0w unless i open it in another application on my laptop. Any ideas, thanks
Hey guys, trying to jailbreak my iphone for the first time in ages. It’s a 3g 16gb running 3.0.
When it gets to the “waiting for reboot” it just stays there … I left it for about an hour and still no change.
Is there something I should be doing … like pressing any of the buttons or could there be something else I have missed.

has anyone has a problem where after they jailbroke their screen would start flashing rapidly aftering trying to launch cydia?

I've never jailbroken my phone; kinda scared. Will I lose any contacts, apps, songs, pics? Can I go back to the un-jailbroken version easily? Can I still buy regular apps from app store add new music? What will happen if I try to update to the 3.1 software with a jailbroken phone? Will it get bricked?
Also....what are the advantages of jailbreaking it?

Can you post or link instructions on how to edit the plist to get the settings "Cellular Data Network" to show up? I gave my girlfriend my old iphone and she is saying the internet isn't working. I haven't had a chance to look at it myself but am assuming this is the problem.
I jailbroke my phone but after I do and after a few hours of use, it freezes up and I can't use it until I restore it, it seems like the jailbreak is unstable, can anyone help me????
In Windows Vista DO NOT install Icy, the installation will not work.

Hi, I have an iphone 3G with 2.2.1 OS and 2.30.03 baseband installed in it. Do i need to upgrade it to 3.0 OS using APPLE'S OFFICIAL 3.0 FIRMWARE (using update optin in itune)before jailbraking? or, can i use iPhone OS 3.0 for iPhone 3G (IPSW) given in this tutorial to upgrade my phone to 3.0 OS?

That is not so easy and again not so difficult.
First of all you need an Iphone PC Suite. so that we can navigate into the files of iphone.
By the way what carrier are u using?

Usually Redsn0w 0.72 is a .rar file. SO you will need "winrar" application to unrar the file to use the redsn0w.exe

You will not lose your contacts songs or pics if you have them in itunes. To be on the safer side make sure you manually backup your photos rest you can always get it Once your phone is jailbroken you cannot go back to "un-jailbroken" (if you meant original version) Its a tedious process to do that. If you update to 3.1 with a jailbroken phone you will not be able to use your SIM CARD. Wait for the update until 3.1 jailbreaking tool is released (which will not be any sooner) coz the 3.1 beta is only released now.

You NEED TO FIRST UPDATE USING iTUNES with OS 3.0 and then jailbreak using the .ipsw and the redsnow downloading in this website

IS it 1G "IPOD" or "iPHONE"? There is a seperate version of ipsw available for 1g/2g version iphone (google it and find as there are lots of sites available try "blogsdna.com/3742/download-custom-ipsw-30-for-iphone-3g-2g-30-ipod-touch-30.htm" and download the version for 2G (if it is an iphone) there is a seperate version for "iPOD"

Difference Iphone 1G vs iphone 2G
The biggest difference is that the 2nd generation iPhone has 3G internet connectivity which the first generation lacks. Take a look at the link below for a side-by-side spec comparison. The 2G model refers to the 1st generation and the 3G model is the 2nd generation iPhone.

Cydia is very unstable after Jailbreaking OS 3.0. Use "Icy" its far more stable and better in most of the ways. People who have used it will agree with me.

But if you do have then go to “Cellular Data Network” and then to "APN" and enter your data plan details. This will solve your "you must have a cellular data plan to use this service"
Well...jailbroke my phone for the first time. It went way smoother than I thought; did it on Vista without a single problem. But Cydia sometimes crashes when i download a theme. Haven't really messed with it all that much; what are some apps I should download first?

I am using T-Mobile on a 3G iphone. Everything else works great, wifi, sms, phone, just no edge. If you could post a good walk through on how to edit the plist that would be great. Difficulty isn't a problem as long as the instructions are written for someone who's never done it.

Jailbroke on windows 7 beta with 3.0 worked on my pc but do NOT install icy. I did the first time and cydia would not load.
Need Help!! When i donwload "iPhone 3.0 firmware" for windows, WinRAR extracts it but there are mutiple files and none of them are .ispw formate. How do I get this extension. I did this for my iPod Touch and the file that was downloaded was a iTunes cube with the .ispw extension. What am I doing wrong???
I have a 3g with updated 3.0 software i did all the steps everything went smooth phone is running great, i only downloaded Icy and when i try to go download something, all it says is "Couldn't Resolve Host name" then gives me the source website no matter which source. any ideas?

ok so i was able to cancel the install and try the process over again.....and each time it looks to me like its trying to reboot and install the jail break software, but then the phone just sits there and doesnt do anything for as long as I let it sit there. not too sure what to do this point except not jail break my phone....oh well sucks to be me then huh. lol

I have a 3g that still has the itunes symbol at the top of the screen with the little usb cord on the bottom... Itunes saw the phone once and asked if I wanted to install 3.0 firmware via Itunes 8.2. I guess my question would be, how do I get past the Itunes USB screen so I could actually get to the application screen?

This symobilzation means that you are in "Recovery Mode" So cannot see any applications in here. You can only update the firmware by doing Shift + Restore on Itunes and that will give you the browse option to select the downloaded ipsw file to update. So i am not sure which step you have completed.

It means that your iPhone is not "UNLOCKED". Remember that Jailbreaking is different and Unlocking is different.
If you Jailbreak your phone it will give you the icons otherwise it lock on a emergency call only screen
If you need to unlock then you should have checked "unlock" which will be in the screen on redsn0w 0.72 where you check "install Cydia" or "install Icy"

Try updating your phone using itunes v 8.2 to OS 3.0 and then jailbreak it once again using Redsn0w 0372.

If you get that msg, try to refresh the sources. You just need to refresh the source by clicking the refresh button that you will find on the top left corner when u go to "sources" tab at the bottom. Unlike Cydia , ICY already has all the mail sources added however when u hit on edit and then add or the "+" sign and select "add all " and then select done and try refreshing again for two or four times. This way it worked for me
