Steve Jobs iPhone 3.1

Updating to iPhone 3.1 this weekend? TiPb's got your back!

We're also going to keep track of known iPhone 3.1 issues and bugs, so if enough of us find the same problems, we'll post on them and they'll automagically get added to the list.

Go luck and happy updating!

Inside iTunes LP: No DRM, Lots of WebKit
  1. SomeGuy says:

Seems that 3.1 breaks tethering and mms hack. No thanks, I'll stay 3.0 and continue to do both instead of trade it in for app managment and the potential to brick my phone. I have a google voice account and I'm considering maybe jailbreaking to use the app and i don't want it killed with updating.. I was very excited about 3.1, and it seems to be as a bunch of nothing.

  2. Adam says:

I updated my phone and it's working really well. For those of you who don't plan to jailbreak your phones I recommend the update.

  3. fastlane says:

Even when the Dev Team says it's okay, I'm still skipping this. I'll wait until there's something worthwhile in a future version.

  4. M says:

    @ SomeGuy

my tethering still works, not that I use it but just to test it out and see if it's still functioning properly and all i have is the hack. I choose not to jailbreak since it isn't worth it to me really and I can update whenever a new patch comes and not wait for the DEV team's version. Plus the official MMS comes in less than 2 weeks so not that much of a loss if you lose your MMS hack. Anyways, 3.1 works fine and flawlessly for me.

  5. Mav says:

A couple of things, which I don't like about 3.1 and iTunes 9: 1. Sync time again became very long. Even after a simple change (i. e. icons swap via iTunes) it takes "forever". 2. 3GS iPod voice control stopped working when iPhone is connected to car audio. It still works when disconnected. It worked great with 3.0 and was one of my most favorite features.

  6. Zak Saber says:

I agree with Someguy and many others. 3.1 was supposedly exciting ... Not. I'm skipping this update. There's NOTHING to smile about in 3.1. I want my MMS now!

  7. skywind says:

This version took away my favorite feature of one of my smart playlists for podcast. The settings are Date Added less than 1 and Play Count less than 1. All my daily podcasts would play once in the iPhone and then disappear from the smart playlist, so at a glance I could see what I had left to listen to. Now, they stay on the list. A small complaint, but I really liked the feature.

  8. Tommu says:

I can't hear my keyboard or unlock sounds after 3.1 update on my 3gs.

  9. Dionte says:

I'm excited about app management, I love organization

  10. Pat says:

3.1 breaks unofficial tethering in Ireland, so I will stick with 3.0.1

  11. Hakala says:

This could very well be just me, just a personal problem not a major bug itself, but yesterdy afternoon when I turned my iPhone 3G back on after turning it off for six hours, I flick to the second home screen where all my favorite apps are (TiPb link, facebook, fml, TTR2, other games...) only to find ever single app that is on my phone, in alphabetical order. Now, this normally would have been a HUGE pain in the @$$ to fix, so I called apple anyways seeing as I wasn't even at home available to iTunes AppManagement to fix the ordeal, and I reported the issue, and I guess I'm the first to have this problem, and he told me simply to arrange the apps back the way I wanted in iTunes 9. And honestly, it took me five minutes. Plus a few minutes for sync time as podcasts accumulated over the past day. In conclusion, iTunes 9/iPhone 3.1: FTW. P.S. The latter was typed (tapped) on my iPhone.

  12. Hakala says:

And seriosly everbody else in the comments and even on the site, ITS A POINT ONE UPDATE! it's minor features. A few bug fixes. One or two Wanted features (ie- app management via iTunes, non destructive video editing.) this isn't a point oh update. Were not getting a second app store here folks. It's MINOR feature updates. Period. So quit complaining that it's not worth your time to update because there aren't a lot of features added. I sure as bloody hell wouldn't want a bb right now becase they aren't churning out new feature sets every fee months...

  13. Hakala says:

    Edit: every few months.

  14. Gregg says:

Tethering and MMS both still work. I know read a forum that's almost 30 pages long with people having MMS working. I did the settings and unfortunatly, oddly enough it only works if you have family plan texting. I'm guessing because it's a different "type" of plan. Funny thing was people with single lines were upgrading to unlimited Family messaging to get it to work and of course it did. I have the MMS settings and mine doesn't work. I'm not going to family plan even though it's only for 2 weeks and you can go back. And with the tethering hack. This 3.1 version has the tethering counter now too. Don't know if AT&T has a different way of tracking it now or what.

  15. Liam says:

I thought when yu held down te icons to move them they were ment to vibrate?!?!!

  16. fastlane says:
... quit complaining that it’s not worth your time to update because there aren’t a lot of features added.

    Who are we, your kids?

Actually, there were a lot of features added. Rene listed them in the walkthrough. Would you prefer people update to 3.1, permanently lose data, re-jailbreak, then reinstall their lost Cydia apps, knowing full well that they'll never use even one of the 3.1 features? Seriously?

I've done it in the past when .1 updates had something to offer... but this one doesn't. The fact that it's a minor feature update is irrelevant.

It's just a blog with people's opinions about a phone, for chrissake. :)

  17. Fassy says:

Not sure if this is 3.1 related or not, but I have never had this problem until 2 days ago, and now it has hit me twice.

Both times, I will have had no texts/push notifications/calls for a few hours, then, upon rebooting the phone, I see a torrent of texts and notifications from this time period, as well as a couple of new voice mails from calls that never rang. This makes my phone untrustworthy at best - has anybody else seen a problem like this? (No, I am not jailbroken.)

  18. EAPR says:

My tethering works perfectly, and I am SO GLAD they have the app management in iTunes. I told an Apple rep that they should add that like two weeks ago haha.

I do have a question though. What's the carrier profile 3.1 was supposed to come with? I have 5.0 but most of the people I've talked to have like 4.5 or something. What is the hack to enable MMS? Someone please email me with a link or something, I'm curious to see if it'll work.

  19. Tenor146 says:

So far, nothing has gone wrong. Since 3.0 my sync time has been longer but still under 5 minutes with 90% of space taken up on my phone. One nice thing I noticed is that the messages app is SO much snappier. I'm happy

  20. Fringgo says:

Tethering won't be disabled once we can jailbreak because then something like PDA net can be used. Iwonder if this will disable MMS for those who unlock also.

  21. icebike says:

    @Mav:

Long sync times: Apparently you are not alone. There are quite a few others noticing long sync times with iTunes 9.

    http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/09/11/with-itunes-9-apple-brings-back-a-classic-the-slow-iphone-sync/

Apple has some suggestions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3603

It seems that the camera roll directory is NOT treated the same as a regular photos subdirectory.

That seems to be the only new hints I've found on this subject. Then there are the usual 10,000 unhelpful recommendations to use a USB 2.0 port.

2: As for your second item, how are you connecting to the car radio, using the head-phone jack or a bluetooth?

If via the headphone jack: Not all 3.5mm headphone plugs are created equal. Subtle spacing of the contacts on jacks that do NOT include a mic connection can fool the phone into thinking a mic is connected when it actually isn't. But if it used to work, is still should...

  22. Ram says:

Gregg and EAPR, when you say that tethering still works is it because you see the carrier profile or have you actually tested it? Also, did you use the ben. method and who is your carrier?

  23. Natesac says:

Try scrolling through your podcasts. It's choppy as hell. I don't know what they changed but they need tl change it back.

  24. Kevin says:

Fassy. Are you on AT&T? I am, and I get this all the time. Even when I was on 2.0, and even now that I'm on 3.0.1. Personally, I think it's just AT&T.

  25. Warren says:

I just don't want to re-jailbreak, re-theme, and load all cydia apps and all of my settings again. What's the coolest thing about 3.1 anyways? Saving video from e-mails and MMS? WOW! My iphone is awesome the way it is. I have a 3Gs with working MMS and tethering.(not to mention all of the other goodies) What more could you ask for. I don want it to unlockable and never jailbroken again.

  26. Quarks says:

I think I've found a change in iPod.

If after a power cycle ( no Now Playing ) you plugged in your head phones and clicked their button to start the iPod (on 3g), it would start playing 'Songs' in alphabetical order.

For me it would be: A-Punk by Vampire Weekend, then Absolute Beginners by The Jam .... ( I could go on  ) Now it plays 'Songs' but with Shuffle, so starts anywhere, much better, was getting fed up with Vampire Weekend , anyone else noticed this?

  27. Gregg says:

It works on the older carrier files. Im using 5.1 now and I havent reinstalled ben yet. But I have used it with 3.1.

  28. Mav says:

    @icebike:

Thanks for the link about long sync time. I don't really have much in my camera roll but I'll try to play around with it.

Regarding car audio: I connect via Neo Car Audio iPhone/iPod accessory: http://www.neocaraudio.com/

It worked fine with iPhone 3G but since accessory uses CD changer car interface to work I could only play (and scroll through) 99 songs max.

Upgrading to 3GS was a dream come true: I could now use voice control when driving to play all songs/albums/artists stored on iPhone on request. This last feature is broken for me in 3.1 firmware.

Now, when I disconnect iPhone, it "obeys" my commands just fine. When connected to Neo Car Audio accessory, it still says "playing songs by that and that...." when directed, but continues to play whatever song it was playing.

  29. Sean Peters says:

I'm actually quite pleased with 3.1... it cured a couple of really weird (apparently) regression bugs in the iPod application. Under 3.0.x, the iPod app would forget what it was doing if you did ANYTHING else with the iPhone... starting back at the select playlist screen. Also, at random intervals, it would quit the song it was playing, and flick to some random spot in the playlist. Both of these problems, which drove me crazy, seem to have been cured in 3.1. Yay!

  30. John says:

I thought 3.1 opened up the video APIs for 3rd party devs. I want video editing apps! Can someone confirm?

  31. BrightEyeDiaz says:

Something is wrong with my 3G after the 3.1 update..

Yesterday my phone "hard locked" or crashed one time.. But then today it has happened twice al ready. The screen freezes or stays black, if in standby, and the only way to get it working again is to reset (press the power and home button)

I´m curious to know if anyone else is having this problem after 3.1..

  32. Fassy says:

    @Kevin

Yes, I am on AT&T, too. If you have had it on earlier releases, it is just coincidence it started for me now, and it is most likely an AT&T issue for me, too. Thanks for the response.

  33. Chobbs1 says:

Just updated to 3.1. I have not had any issues that I have heard sooo much about. Custom ringtones are still assigned to the proper people. No crashes. Sync times are normal. All is well here....so far

  34. TonyPatron says:

After everyone saying all this bad stuff about 3.1 I must just be lucky. My phone seems faster, voice control works great with my Jabra BT spreakerphone/FM transmittor in the car, battery seems to last longer, and syncs are REALLY fast now. I also didn't lose any features or sound. 3.1 worked out great for me.

  35. Mav says:

I sorted out long sync problem. It indeed seems to be rooted in the media files not being copied to the iPhoto When I copied them and then removed from a device the sync was pretty fast.

  36. Tjf76 says:

Someday I might be able to send or recieve a pic. This is getting old!! Update this, carrier that, blah-blah-blah!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about jumping through hoops just to be able to do something my daughters $50.00 phone was able to do for years. They should of just waited to release the 3gs until they had all this figured out!

  37. Marvin says:

Everytime when i sync my music on the playlist of recently added, there seems to be a bug that doesnt put the songs in order from date added sequence. Also in other playlist, the title of the songs arent in alphabetical order. ive tried deleting/readding all the playlist an same issue. also when i deleted a duplicate song on my library before syncing with my iphone 3gs, the song deleted will not delete at all on my iphone. ive verified this exact same issue with other iphones 3gs as well as iphone 3g. PLEASE FIX!!

  38. SpiceRak2 says:

I was going to just grin and bear hanging onto the 2G another year but after 3.1, my phone simply stopped reporting the correct battery level. It stayed at 100% for a very long time, making me believe that this update somehow increased the life. It wasn't until the phone abruptly shut off that I realized the error.

My 2G barely survived 3.0 and after this tasty little glitch, I just picked up the 3Gs. I had to install 3.1 on the new device and aside from a really botched transfer of personal data, everything appears to be fine.

  39. David says:

@ SOMEGUY : how did u get MMS to work ive tried but no success

  40. Adller says:

@ BrightEyeDiaz: I had the same problem.

  41. Tom says:

Anyone notice decreased battery life? I'm down to 80 % after being on standby for 5 hours (no 3G). Yesterday I had to recharge halfway through the day with only doing Facebook and a few emails.

  42. Adller says:

Since 3.0, my battery lasts 12 - 15h (standby). The same happens with 3.1.

  43. Jaredkaragen says:

I had tethering on 3.0.1 before updating to 3.1, after the update I still saw the tethering option until I tried to use it, got a message saying it was not supported and it was removed.

I then had to downgrade to 3.0.1 and use quickpwn to fix the issue with the 1015 error.

After that, re-install the benm profile and presto... Tethering on 3.0.1 with the updated baseband.

Hope this helps some peeps! I like the new baseband, signal interruptions while traveling are uncommon now.

  44. nrotx says:

I had the same problem as Fassy (#18, above). No phone service or texting after the upgrade. My iPhone is a regular iPhone 3G 16mb ... not jailbroken. I have rebooted and it seems to be working now ... hopefully it will keep working. There were no errors during the upgrade process. Kind of worrying that it just stopped working after the upgrade with no indication of problems. Incoming calls went straight to voicemail. Outgoing calls were silent and just didn't connect.

  45. Tjf76 says:

Tom & adller,..... I noticed a big drop in battery life too. Not sure what happened but it seems like I can't go anywhere for any period of time without bringing a charger

  46. Tjf76 says:

I talked to AT&T today and they told me that on September 25th they are putting out the the update for mms, I'll believe it when I see it.

  47. Zacs says:

iPhone 3G - hacked, not broken. Tethering worked till 3.1 upgrade. Removed hack, now tethering working again. These configurations can be removed via: Settings .. General .. Profiles

    Worked for me. Good luck.

  48. Mari says:

Ever since i got this update, My phone screen has been going black and I have to restart it again. :P

  49. Ads says:

3.1 doesn't break tethering... It just allows carriers to detect and subsequently charge for the data

  50. Kathy says:

Something is wrong with my 3G after the 3.1 update..

my phone has been “hard locked” and crashing. The screen freezes or stays black, if in standby, and the only way to get it working again is to reset (press the power and home button)

I´m curious to know if anyone else is having this problem after 3.1..

  51. Dan says:

My phone has done this once since upgrading. I put it down to the iPhonne norm. I will update if I get further issues. I upgraded to 3.1 about 1 week ago. I just tried to switch on tethering, the option was there so I switched it on and closed settings. No tethering eventuated, so I went back into settings and the tethering option has vannished. I will look at carrier files tonight to see if I can work out that went on.
