Facts are, Verizon has 5 TIMES more 3G coverage than AT&T.

AT&T has the best service and network hands down. I have had Verizon and i have friends that currently have Verizon and their network/data is a joke. AT&T may have some dropped calls here and there but everyone does. When you have a phone sucking as much Data from the network as an iPhone you are bound to have issues. People make the mistake thinking a mobile network can handle things like a Terrestrial Network and it just cant. Verizon’s Data is slow, their phones are junk and with the attitude they have coped reguarding the Android phones i doubt we would see an iPhone with them anytime at all. Maybe T-mobile can get an iPhone and people can run over there to avoid “evil AT&T” and realize that running an iPhone on their lousy network is way worse than anything they experienced at AT&T.

Let’s look at the facts: Verizon has a much better network hands down over AT&T. The fact that AT&T took a shot with the Iphone was most likely the only thing that kept AT&T as a major player in the cell phone market. Verizon made a poor choice and is suffereing for it. However – if anyone thinks that the new Google phone, “Droid” is the anti Iphone and that it will keep Apple from selling phones with Verizon is big mistake. What has Apple got to lose? They could easily double their market share in phone sales (Why would Apple stockholders not like this???)and Verizon would become greater still. Who loses here?

Jon, good post except for one thing.. You lost all your credibility as soon as you mention the keyboard thing.

You have obviously have not spent at least five minutes of your life typing on a iPhone/itouch- because If you did you would simply know that physical plastic keyboards are a THING OF THE PAST!

It’s 2009 Jon.. Virtual keys are the way to go. Stop Sacraficing potential space for a bigger display and try out apples keyboard. 

the secret is not to “aim” at every letter, rather type normal and even if you make a mistake, finish the word and watch the iPhone automatically correct it for you

that is very interesting. You are the first person that I have came across that doesn't blame AT&T for their dropped calls.. Rather the firmware/software of the iPhone. You might be in the 1% tile there Bugs.

I doubt it it's the firmware of the iPhone that's responsible for all the dropped calls in NYC. Then again I have no other experience with any other atnt phones so hey, you might actually be on to something!

What are you guys talking about? Bb has its own app store that VZ gets nothing from, the OS and UI on my curve is all from RIM, and the BBStorm has dual antennas a CDMA one and a quad band GSM one, its not that hard to make.

Look at the list:

Verizon to demand 30-50% commission on all on-device App Store sales, and all iTunes media sales. (Where did this come from? WinMo doesn't have this does it or BB?)
If not a complete replacement of the App Store with Verizon’s own application market. (Where did this come from - again WinMo and BB doesn't have this problem?)
Removal of key applications to force users to pay for premium Verizon services (like V-Cast in lieu of Maps) (Really? Today? WinMo doesn't have this issue with recent hardware...)
Removal of WiFi and lockdown of GPS (okay, we added that for old times sake — but it’s happened with BlackBerry and Windows Mobile) (Check HTC and the Touch Pro2 - both with WiFi and GPS).
Ugly Verizon branding plastered all over the iPhone. (this is the only possible one that has ANY merit. And most people have a case on their phone anyway... so moot.)
Every hour at least, Verizon slaps a baby and pushes an old person. (OK - I made that one up - but it seems to be appropriate considering the amount of made-up stuff above.)

Most people like Verizon because of better call quality and fewer dropped calls. Verizon has world phones as well - with GSM included for world travel. Again - check out the Touch Pro2.

And everyone is forgetting Jailbreaking - assuming they found a way to lock down apps etc. It would be the same as what you see on AT&T - only on a better network (I carry an iPhone (AT&T) and a BB (VZW) - and when I get a call on my iPhone - I tell them I will call them right back on my BB. The call quality is drastically better on the BB.

@Gino. I live in NYC with at&t I have an iPhone and other 3g/3g+ devices. Only phone that has at&t dropped call issue is my iPhone no other at&t phone dropped calls on me in NYC. It’s nit an at&t problem but the hardware iPhone.

The only reason I would go to Verizon would be because of the coverage. Places where I vacation just don’t have AT&T service. My friends have Verizon, and I have to depend on their phones to make phone calls if we’re in outlying areas. Just a little more coverage ATT!

Verizon would definitely gimp the iPhone. Google has made statements in the past that they would allow carriers to customize the Android interface to their liking. That’s the sole reason that there was a Google/Verizon partnership announced. Can’t wait to see how bad Verizon gimps Android. Here’s a bad sign though folks. A recent patent reveled on theiphoneblog points to Apple possibly allowing carriers to gimp features of the iPhone – http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/10/05/apple-applied-patent-method-locking-iphone/ Could that be a sign of a Verizon bound iPhone? Possibly. I would sure be a sad state of affairs. The auction of the 700 MHz spectrum – which Verizon won – requires openness to any device as per the FCC. Verizon has stated that their LTE will use the 700 MHz spectrum that they won. That’s when we’ll most likely see the iPhone. Wouldn’t it be nice if Apple took the European way of doing things and just sold it unlocked and you could buy a SIM or hop on Verizon LTE at will?? Ok, back to reality

about AT&T dropped calls

If you're fortunate enough to be in an area where you don't experience dropped calls from your iPhone, lucky for you. You should not have much complains about AT&T except maybe their rollout of mms and expensive plans.

Unfortunetly, I live and work throughout all Boro's of NYC.. and I Dropped calls all the time. Like ALL the time! If you're like me and are in a big city where youre dropping calls consistantly, you can't help but to think how iPhone would be on another carrier.

Some guy Brett even said " all you AT&T guys complaining about dropped calls are just lazy as$es" because it's just a matter of calling the person back..apparently..LMAO. - you, Brett, have not obviously experienced what AT&T is like in Manhattan. You couldn't sound any more ignorant than you do.

Are we possibly getting used to getting about 3 dropped calls a day??

AT&T may cover metropolitan zones, but that does not translate to good call performance, unfortunately. In Southern California (LA/SD) I literally have more dropped calls every month on my (AT&T) iPhone than I had in my entire 5 years on Verizon (Treo 650, Treo 700p, Blackberry 8830).

However, I like my iPhone far more than I liked any of the phones I had on Verizon, and I use simultaneous voice and data all the time.

All carriers are good at some things and suck at others I'd like to see an iPhone on Verizon just so we could pick our poison, so to speak.

Also the "Map for that" is bogus, We are using the 2007 3G map of AT&T yet for VzW we are incorporating our Extended Network and Roaming Networks and saying they are our 3G.

AT&T's coverage covers most of the Metropolitan Zones and Highways. VzW was about the same until the Alltel purchase. As for drop calls...AT&T and VzW was no different until i add North Va/Maryland into the equation. I drop a shit ton of phone calls on VzW when I am in Leesburg or Tyson's Corner and in Glenburnie and White Marsh my coverage was "Okay". AT&T however is superior in those regions.

Love my Iphone, love AT&T. I travel All over the country and AT&T is the only carrier I can use in every state. Even in Alaska I had full bars and excellent 3G speed. Verizon doesn’t even have a store in Alaska. Verizon is not a logical option for me, even if they had an iphone. I’m a multi-tasker, I need to be able to do simultaneous voice and data. not possible with verizon.

Wow, I really DO think that Verizon would do all that. They’re all about getting THEIR brand name out there on popular phones. If they got the iPhone, I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw a huge, red Verizon check mark on the back of the phone and many limitations on the OS. As far as removing Wi-Fi, I agree. They’ve hindered many of their phones through this removal already so that their customers are forced to fork over the cash and purchase a data plan (unlimited or not). I’d also expect them to limit the app store as stated above and try to get some sort of percentage of the sales. Doesn’t Verizon have ENOUGH revenue rolling in?

I hope that T-Mobile and Sprint get the iPhone. I would dump AT&T for T-Mobile or Sprint. Verizon had a chance on the original iPhone, they passed. So no iPhone for them in my opinion. Verizon is not as wonderful as people think. They add charges all the time, restrict phones functions and yes it has gotten better but they still do, and want it to be their App store. On second thought, let Verizon get the iPhone, then everyone will see what “the Network” really is like. The one that would have the least problem is Sprint, they have the best EDVO A. network.

@all of you, you are all right in one way or another. Compitition between Corp is good for customers. AT&T sucks just as much as verizon, t mobile and sprint. Right now if you like the iPhone, sign up with AT&T and if you like other phone, go with verizon, t mobile, or sprint. Then get on with your life. Bottom line we like iPhone and we don't like the (any) carrier. Because in the u.s.a we just talk tough on blog but we don't take it to the street like the European and other countries. USA is so far behind in technology than those in Europe.

It seems like their Android strategy might be focused around getting some leverage in the negotiations. It stinks for the consumer if they don’t work it out, since they have much of the available data capacity (killer network with nothing but low data usage, high ARPU BlackBerrys running on it) until LTE really rolls out in full force.

No I'm actually not a vzw employee but I was an AT&T employee with an iphone and I gladly gave my iphone to my mother and bought a blackberry with Verizon. Been happy ever since. Its the best thing since chocolate! Not 1 dropped call in over a year and I can go to Idaho and call someone if I wanted to! Check it, "there's a map for that" Lmao and just for the record I'm not a winmo fan nor have I ever owned a winmo device (but they look awesome). Wouldn't buy one bc I'm satisfied with my blackberry. One thing I can say about AT&T is that they're ridiculous. I hated telling people they needed a $700 or $900 deposit for a service. Who does that for a phone? They did ridiculous deposits like that for U-verse too! I didn't mind referring them to sprint or T-Mobile on the side.

I’ve been with AT&T for years in one way shape or form. Other than some coverage issues with phone where I am, and some minor data coverage issue, I really haven’t had much problem. I will say I wish AT&T would deploy 3G more through out. I only get EDGE when I am on the road driving to see family, and my wife can’t facebook very well while I am driving. (Facebook keeps her out of my hair for the 9 hour drive.)

@glen_VA – Finally a voice of reason. I recently switched from V to ATT. Where i live we dont have 3g on ATT yet and i am still happy with the switch. Verizon has good service here as much as ATT. YOu are right about smart phones on verizon. The blackberry is the only good phone they have. The only reason i would want verizon to get the iphone is so to humble their network. Once they got it then we could compare apples to apples and see that their beloved network would suffer just like ATT. Then we could stop seeing that goofy bastard on all the verizon commercials.

Yes, VZW is finally starting to loosen up, they just unlocked GPS on some CrackBerrys, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t historically been the worst about lockdown of WiFi and GPS – they know they have a decent network and a captive audience in some places and they were leveraging that like a mofo. That said… they drop calls too, they lack global roam, they lack simultaneous voice/data. I support the iPhone going multi-carrier because it encourages competition, but don’t expect me to go to VZW. Also, iPhone multicarrier does become WAY more likely under LTE.

I don’t think it really matters which network provider can(or can’t) handle the data requirements of the Iphone–They would all have problems. Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile don’t have to worry about the number of data hungry apps (currently flooding ATT’s network) yet. Only time will tell. Obviously, Verizon has a little longer to plan it’s deployment of data hungry phones–but their app store has only 100 apps–I counted them. Forget the iphone for a minute–I’ve been trying to find a verizon smart phone for my wife but have to tell you that other than email, mms, txt messaging–what else would my wife find useful that Verizon could provide? Not much at this time. Like I said earlier their app store doesn’t have anything worth looking at yet. We’ll just have to see how they (as well as others) deploy their next generation of network upgrades.

I'm on verizon now and can hardly wait till the contract expires in December. They lock everything down too tight. I cannot even get MY contact information off the phone. They have a service (paid) that allows you to sync your contact info to their servers so if anything happens you can get your info off their servers.

You pretty much have to use Verizon's web site if you want to put anything (pics, sound) onto the phone. You push the content to their site and then send the content from the site to the phone. The web site fails often.

I must say that every time we've gone into a V store their people have always been nice and helpful. I've never dealt with ATT so I can't comment on their service.

I don't why everyone is defensive for the iPhone going to verizon. I think both network have strong selling point however, I belove that verizon passed on the iPhone first big mistake. No one network can handle this huge load. But on a consumer based market it would rock of you can choose which provider works best for you. And like the saying goes money talks and bull**** walks. Considering the money and shares the iPhone can potetially brog verizon they should screw up the winning formula...

iShirk. No Chinese mobile companies have 660 million customers. China Mobile has 400+, the others under 200million. Vodafone has in the 400 million also, though that number is reduced if you count proportionately.

Regardless. The BB Storm was custom made for Vodafone. It's Vodafone exclusive. No carrier, not wholly or partly owned by Vodafone carries it. Vodafone own a large chunk of Verizon, so they got it.

Between my wife and I we gave a 3g, 3gs, and a bberry bold. The 3gs drops data connections (wifi and 3g) 5x more than the 3g or bold. We can literally be sitting in the same room and I’ll be surfing away on the 3g and the 3gs will have no connectivity. The bold is the most reliable in terms of connectivity but just doesn’t compare. The iPhone hardware definately plays a factor in with the connectivity issues, yet it’s rarely discussed. The iPhone does not suffer from a lackluster of feature straight out of the box. If u don’t like the features or os par say, then don’t get it. I have had dropped calls on VzW and AT&T. Dropped calls is either A coverage problem or in case of the iPhone weak signal strength.

As for the moron Protonus talking about the Touch Pro 2.. Its a windows mobile phone.... Do you know what that means? It means that phone is garbage. Since it released the only people that have not been returning it are the people that know how to mess with the Registries.

Oh yeah the Tilt screen, the crappy OS, and the feeling of cheapness makes it so much better then the iPhone. Especially with its lackluster browser and its horrible email solution. Oh how cute you can do a battery pull... which is totally needed when WinMo crashes and you need to battery pull. i almost forgot make sure you store everything on your storage card because if you don't... you will brick that phone real quick. Lets all hope the Touch Pro 2 doesn't suffer from Omnia syndrome.

The only subject worth debating on the iPhone vs. the Touch Pro2, is the OS and software, and if you like the ability to put whatever you want on your phone, customize nearly any aspect, change huge portions of the OS and install your own rom, have a gigantic library of unrestricted free and pay applications, etc, then Windows Mobile is the clear winner any day of the week. With WinMo 6.5, and it's application store, the last iPhone "perk" of a centralized app store will be gone.

In short: Wake up people the iPhone was outdated over a year ago. Go get yourself a Touch Pro2 and race your iPhone friends to see who can slide out their keyboard, tilt their screen, and pull out their battery faster.

I’m staying with AT&T 4 a long time. WHY k First i always have 5 bars all over the USA & Hawaii (2) my 3G works fine with five bars.(3) I never had a dropped call oh maybe just 1 lol!!(4) I never have 2 pay 4 my bill. Also for the people moaning about the data cost on AT&T, ur all idiots. AT&T does not subsidize the iPhone. It is more of a loan passes on to the consumer. That’s why u eathier have to be a new customer or eligible for an upgrade to get the iPhone at discounted price. Since the cost of the device is accually cheeper on a plan, the remainder of the cost so both AT&T and apple receive the amount lost, the remainder of the loan is desguised as an over paid data plan. So get ur head outta ur a$$es and be greatfull u don’t have to fork out to get the iPhone.

My unbiased opinion is this: it don’t mater what carrier the iPhone is on, there are still going to be problems anywhere. AT&T and verizon both have issues. Dropped calls? That not even a problem!! Personally I don’t have dropped calls often since I use my iPhone more than I use my own computer and when I get a droppers call ever as little as possible I just call back. Simple I know! It’s just amazing how lazy and complainfull how as a sociaty we have become. Also another look on how the iPhone has been on AT&T, look at all the inovation and breakthough on technolgy has been on all the other networks. It’s great for the market and a benefit to us as consumers. If it wasn’t for AT&T getting the iPhone, other carriers wouldn’t have there exclusive AAA handset striving for compitition in a market that dominated by the iPhone! Just sayin that’s all!

Also, about the customer service, I am not aware how it works currently between AT&T and Apple for the iPhone, but Verizon has awesome customer service, as well as Apple! So it really won’t matter! And I think Apple will always support their product. With the iPhone, its Apple’s phone and AT&T’s service, Apple wouldn’t want it any other way with Verizon.

I don’t know why everyone on this site is so against AT&T. Many of my friends love verizon, I have verizon, I would love the iPhone for verizon. Verizon wants the iPhone because many unhappy customers with AT&T would switch to back to verizon, Apple wants them to have the iPhone because their sales would practically double over night. The only party who doesn’t want a Verizon iPhone is AT&T. I don’t think Apple would allow any of the above things to happen to their phone… I was and still am not concerned with any of that BS made up. Also, as some pointed out, a Verizon iPhone would create less network problems as their would be less people on one network (assuming the iPhone user population doesn’t double!) and price wars would drag the price a little lower. But also, think of this. Would verizon do those things listed if it would keep AT&T customers? NO!

Since i work for VzW i can tell you what they would do.

They would want to put all there crap on the device and make it where you cannot delete it off. A good example is the VzAppZone that ruined the Omnia. Yes they will let the Manufacturer put there app stores on their devices BUT they will make sure the first thing a customer sees is the V-cast App Store.

Second while the GPS isn't locked on VzW devices how many people actually have GPS apps that compete with Vz Nav?

The truth is this... While they are saying they will open up its all garbage.

@JohnnyReb: Just because VZ has "terrible data" doesn't mean only AT&T should have the iPhone. How on earth do you make that leap? There are other carriers (T-Mobile, Sprint, etc.)

Speaking of that, if VZ is indeed giving Apple the strongarm treatment about controlling/locking down, then all Apple has to do is go partner with T-Mobile and Sprint, leaving VZ the only major carrier without it. This will become so embarrassing and money-losing that VZ will have to back down.

even worse, they would need a global phone to be taken seriously by businesses which means higher costs for the dual antennas and thus a higher cost for a new internal design

I just moved from Verizon to AT&T and bought a 16G iPhone and quite frankly a Verizon actually getting the iPhone is a blessing in disguise. If the iPhone preforms better on big red, AT&T will have to beef up there system and provide more options for iPhone users. I think this would be a good move which could spark better apps and service on both sides.

Ok, here is the deal, people need to wake up and realize that Verizon is NOT the devil anymore when it comes to locking things down. They don't lock things down like they used to, they announced THEY would allow GOOGLE VOICE (AT&T had to follow right after), yes they may put there logo on it in one place, but in there higher end phones they no longer "plaster" it all over the phone in RED.

I love my iPhone, but will probably leave it thanks to AT&T's 3-4 dopped calls a day, you know in the middle of NO WHERE....... Washington, DC!

Blackberry is totally different. Its so security based that the VZW crap they want just wouldnt fly on RIM's platform. Why do you think a lot of the same "cool" apps arent on BB phones like the Storm? Because their development platform is so restricted because of security that its difficult. Prob too difficult for VZW to waste their time on.

I dont think VZW would do much "red interface," but they wouldnt be able to handle it any more so then ATT. Although I will agree, let some of the complainers off ATT and open up some bandwidth for people who know the advantages of GSM and HSPA over EVDO.

But Id agree Apple prob didnt want to give up that much control that VZW likes to have over its phones. Look what happened with the Windows Mobile Marketplace, VZW took it off for their own marketplace. they want control of everything, and Apple prob wouldnt budge for them.

The prices for iPhone right now is cheap! I don’t know about the guy above me but 199.99 for 16gb 3gs is great. I bought a fuze for close to double that price and I’m glad I moved to iPhone! If verizon had iPhone, cool let them have it. There will be more price wars and less people using the data network on AT&T. I would gladly pay 399.99 for my 3gs w contract. That is how much I think this phone is worth. Maybe that way, the iPhone data plan would be lowered thus saving even more. People who complain about prices should compare first.
