Metallica

Metallica has just released Live Metallica [$0.99 - iTunes Link], their very own companion application to go along with their LiveMetallica.com website. With it fans can purchase official recordings of each and every single live show since 2004 and listen to the latest concert streaming for free.

Purchase the app, log into your existing LiveMetallica.com account or register as a new user, and voila . . . every show you’ve purchased is there under the “listen” tab, along with a free stream of the latest show on the tour! You can listen to samples of over 5,300 live songs from close to 300 shows, and if you hear something you like, purchase it through the app and it will automatically stream on your phone . . . of course you can download your purchase to your computer later at your leisure. Shows from the free “Vault” section of the site are always streaming, and you can check out photos and notes from almost every show going back to 2004 when the site launched.

Metallica claims to have gotten this idea back in the day when they saw fans bootlegging their shows and figured they would make it more convenient by doing the recording themselves and cashing in. So you have to pay $0.99 to gain access to yet more content you again will have to pay for to access, minus a few free streams and jpegs of the band.

Any hardcore Metallica fans out there going to give this a shot? Let us know in the comments!

[Thanks to Phil for the tip!]

Rumor: Foxconn to Produce 300,000 Apple iTablets for Q1
  1. Victor says:

I find it odd that they were so proactive in their solution to concert bootleggers, but so destructive to people who downloaded their music.

  2. Jason says:

@Victor I think they’ve clearly said that this is their way of taking a “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” approach to fighting piracy. There’s no way they would have agreed to something like this a few years ago, but I think they see the reality of the current landscape. It does seem contradictory, but I can see the logic.

  3. Paul says:

Metallica has left a bad taste in my mouth with all their piracy stuff. I won’t buy anything Metallica related, ever again. I have all their CD’s up until they went crazy. Even though I would have downloaded their newest via the web, I would have eventually purchased their CD’s. But now, not so much. If i hear them come on the radio, I flip the channel. To hell with Metallica. I know an awful lot of people who share that sentiment.

  4. Msousa says:

    I agree Paul.

  5. Victor says:

Yeah except they share that sentiment because Metallica makes absolutely horrid music not out of principle.

  6. fastlane says:

I was a huge fan in the 80s, but burned out from that stuff a long time ago. I doubt I could even sit through one song today.

  7. Mattshall says:

Really… Who want to listen to them anymore.

  8. ATAY47 says:

1995 called…They want their band back. Just say NO to Metalica!

  9. Jim says:

Ya Metallica sold out when they cut their hair off and made that p.o..s album saint anger and it was the drummer Lars who was the douche about the piracy stuff. The rest of the band just had to go along for the ride.

  10. Chris says:

It a pretty cool app. As a member of LiveMetaliica I had access to the stream of the concert I went to back in January that you get free after each show, as well as the most recent show. After each show you will access to the stream of that show.

I have no problem with Metallica and their piracy stance, as I never downloaded from Napster or any of the other sites.

  11. Miles says:

So I have to pay for an app and then pay for music to make that app useable?

  12. Dexter says:

That’s what I’m sayin’, Miles. Metallica thinks they’re actually still popular! LOL!

  13. AL says:

I think Metallica always said you could bootleg their shows and share them. They just don’t want you to get their albums for free with P2P programs. That nuance was never explained very well in the media but I saw an interview back in 99 where Lars said exactly that.

  14. Doom Nation says:

You know what guys , Metallica rarely , once in a blue moon , sometimes Rocks !!

  15. Odell Wehe says:

Hello People! Just wanted to tell you that I bought tickets to Metallica concert on Sep 14th, event The Big 4: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. In this place you can find tickets for other dates too. This concert will be awesome, this is my second time and I’m still so excited about listening them live! On this page you can see the section where you’re buying the ticket, so it’s very recommended! Good luck!!
