TomTom Car Kit Not Compatible with iPod touch and First-Gen iPhone

AppleInsider is reporting that the car kit will not be compatible with the iPod touch and first-generation iPhone 2G. This is a complete turn around from early reports from TomTom claiming since the car kit contained it’s own GPS, you could indeed use the TomTom App Store software/car kit combo with an iPod Touch and first-generation iPhone.
TomTom’s car kit for iPhone has been in the news countless times the past few months and here it is once again. This news should sadden many iPod touch/First-generation iPhone 2G owners who have been waiting for this often delayed accessory to be released. It was first slated to come out this past summer, which was then pushed back to October and now will not be shipped until November.

My reading on this said it contained its own GPS Antenna (really just an antenna booster), NOT its own GPS. You still needed a GPS chipset to receive these boosted signals.
Was everybody else just glossing over the specs in their rush to an overpriced product?
“That’s a shame.”
2g iPhone does NOT have built in gps go away troll
Well if you read engadgets review, they say that it has it’s own complete gps receiver which communicates with the iPhone via Bluetooth. Either way, too expensive, and a year too late.
@Joe McG
“Either way, too expensive, and a year too late.”
Nuff said.
LOL… These companies… thank god we have companies like GOOGLE!!!! hopefully they wont turn to the darker side
@pato, ur ghey. and also this is just another reason I won’t be buying it.
Who cares anyway?? Whoever buys this is an idiot …
It has its own GPS Chip and is compatible with the First Gen! The Carkit is already available here in Germany and there are a lots of youtube Videos Proofing it with the first Gen and even other Software than TT. I think the Kit is too expensive, but it works.
greets from Germany, Mike
People are soooooo dumb. The first gen iphone and the ipod touch do not I repeat do not have GPS. The car kit has a GPS signal enhancer. Which makes the GPS in the iphone 3g or 3gs stronger. I dont have this car kit. But unlike most of the people that comment on this site I READ REVEIWS.
@macboy15 the carkit has a fully featured GPS Chip and not only a enhancer, so it works with the first Gen!!! With the Touch i cant tell, there might be other probs. With the rest of your Post you are absolutely right!
Mike
Specs say it has a full receiver and will feed gps thru the dock to the phone.

So I stand corrected…
There are many YouTube videos showing otherwise.
My car kit has just been delivered by UPS Looks good quality, not too bulky and keeps with the iPhone asthetics.
Now going to spend some time in my car finding the optimum position.
Peace
@Mike If the touch or the 1st gen iphone dont have gps how would it work on one and not the other. They both have the same maps app. The only thing thats different is there no wireless signal on the touch. Which you dont need.
his is right from apple’s website….Overview The TomTom app on your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G puts award-winning technology at your fingertips, like IQ Routes which gives you the smartest, most efficient route any time of day. That’s just the beginning. Combine it with the TomTom Car Kit to experience enhanced GPS performance for the ultimate in-car navigation.
TomTom Car Kit features Secure docking TomTom’s specially designed, award-winning EasyPort mount attaches your iPhone securely to your windscreen or dashboard – perfectly within reach. It lets you rotate the screen for widescreen route display. And it folds flat for easy moves from car to car.
Enhanced GPS performance The TomTom car kit’s built-in receiver increases the GPS performance of your iPhone to give you a truly reliable signal – even in high-rise urban areas.
Accordingly to this article, it works on 2G iPhones:

Why on earth would anyone have a 2g anyway?how about you take the $120 and get a 3gs, and If you don’t have the money to upgrade, than you need to stop reading these sites and get a job.
Oh, and full rss posts please
TomTom car kit tool kit app now in the app store. (and working!)
@pierluigi lol Ok that first video with the foreign talk is bs. Its a 1st gen iphone he is using the google maps and there is a blue blinking dot like you see on a 3g or 3gs. But the 1st gen iphone does not have a gps chip in it or software to do this. And just connecting it to the tom tom unit does not just give it gps. If this was true than it would work with the ipod touch. fishy very fishy
LeaF: LOL… These companies… thank god we have companies like GOOGLE!!!! hopefully they wont turn to the darker side
LOL, you’ve obviously never had to deal with google. They are some of the worst around. Google only cares about one thing, google, and they will crush anyone who stands in their way. I don’t care for apple in the least but google is hardly any better.
For $120 why not just but a tom tom? At least you won’t have to worry about your expensive iPhone falling off the window like that stupid Tom Tom always does.
Really sad! I own the first Iphone generation…shame
It seems that it works:
