Hi actually I am an iphone 3gs user and I voted for none of the above mentioned improvement. I am not too techie so that might be the reason why I don't seem to view these features as important. Anyway, here are my non techie reasons in no particular order:

1. The current screen on my iphone seems really sharp already. Sometimes the words on websites are quite hard to read in portrait mode as they can be a little small and so I prefer to read them in landscape mode. So will I do understand that with a higher resolution screen we can achieve ever sharper text and images, I figured that higher pixel count also would require more processing power to push. Also with bigger native screen resolution, we would require higher quality videos which would take up a bigger amount of storage space on the device. At this moment everything already looks very pretty on the screen and I can't see a reason to push more pixels, use more power, waste more storage for a very small improvement visually.

2. I would like to see an improvement with the camera but not with the mega-pixel count rather I would prefer if they kept the count at 3 and double or triple the CCD sensor size. This will really help with the actual capturing of light thus improving picture quality in low light conditions as well as reduce picture noise.

3. I really like the idea of having a custom/personalize UI with unique wallpaper and themes but not at the extend of simplicity. With the current UI, I never have to worry about explaining how to operation the iphone whenever I pass my phone to a friend to play around with because it is so simple and intuitive. It is so easy especially when I am driving and need directions or need to view the available timing for the latest movie in town, I can just pull out my iphone and pass it to any friend in my car and have full assurance that they are going to be able to get the needed information without any sort of of training.

4. I would love that they introduce a better notification system but the one that I really like is the one that comes with the palm pre. Allowing a couple of notification to be viewed at a single time and with slightly more detail. If we can push reply right back from the notification it would be that much more awesome.

5. Multitasking, widgets and the likes really sap the battery and they don't seem like a viable option. I really rather not have anything sucking battery life, pulling or pushing data from the web, bogging down the internal ram, taking up processing cycle when I am not currently viewing or working with it. Rather the best solution is to have some main application multi-task and the others push notification when necessary. Which the Iphone already does. (on a side note if you really must listen to radio while drafting a letter might I suggest using lastfm app, there is an option that allows the songs to be pushed to safari which has multi-tasking capabilities and as such would allow to work on something else will listening to songs on digital stations. And yes ever surf the web, through third party applications like prefect web.)

6. I would vote for a better network but I am not located in USA and the current carrier that I am with is really quite good, call quality on the iphone is amazing and no issues with drop calls whatsoever.

7. Hopefully the next iphone would keep the same shape (yes I love my morphie juice pack air that much, only wish they would add an led light on it, in the next build.), have the same screen resolution, but have a faster processor with lower power consumption and a larger battery. Throw in wireless N, an FM radio and the ability to connect to my car stereo wirelessly and we are ready to go.

Oh and 1 more thing, if there was a simple way to switch to toggle things like wifi, location, 3g it would be most welcome. May be a "press and hold to switch" right at the status bar on top. Seems the most intuitive solution to this problem. Cheers.

When you give developers an open system to do whatever they want with.. they expand on the initial idea in directions you never thought about.

I have an iphone 3g. I love it. Its a lot slower than my friend's 3gs, but I was unlucky to have bought it just enough before the new one that I couldnt upgrade

The browser is awesome, the ease of getting new apps is great... and the accuracy of the touch screen is bananas. but I want to be able to download and share my music over the web with all of my devices. None of this itunes gumming everything up.

I want to be able to share the music i have on my phone, with my car stereo, so i don't have to keep plugging my phone in to aux every time i get in the car.

iphone is limited unless they figure out how to play nice with everyone else. For now, imho, the best phone is the iphone 3gs. next year though is anyone's game.

physical keyboard, once again, i prefer a soft keyboard

large screen means a more fragile screen and a larger phone, ive already been through a broken iphone screen

5mega camera, doesnt mean better pictures, and i don't need to make posters from my camera phone

liberal app aproval = poorly written apps = me wasting money on apps that suck

multitasking makes a slower phone, my iphone works the same every time i use it

customization, when i had a storm i spent more time "customizing" than actually using the thing, no thank you

widgets go back to multitasking, i don't need my phone getting bogged down when im not even using it

notification system. i know im blue collar so i don't have the corporate email, but i really don't have a problem with the way apple has done it

Really I could care less about Pandora, but I won't cut it down if you like it, that's cool. But your Ron Jeremy stuff is about as childish as it gets, I doubt anyone over 17 thinks it's funny.

It's sad to see some of the remarks here. Just because "you" may not have a need for a particular feature does no mean it's not important or to fain ignorance that no one else uses it either. In any case the iPhone is a great device and a pleasure to use. It's only failing is the lack of features when compared to other smartphones. Hopefully Apple will wake up and realize they need to ramp up the feature set of the iPhone before it's to late.

I always want a better screen on everything, but I think the iPhone screen is gorgeous, so it's not ever something that bothers me when I'm using the phone.

I'd like a better camera most of all (as I blog and photoblog, using my iPhone as my primary camera), but 5MP does not necessarily mean better quality photos. If we are to assume it does, that's what I would have voted for.

I voted for multitasking, but I'd only really want it running for a couple apps (I have Backgrounder installed and use it very rarely).

@stink7k Yes but if I bought a Camry, it had foglights, but they weren't wired up, why should Toyota care if I have them wired up instead of going to the dealership and buying a new car with foglights installed. (3G vs. 3Gs; no video vs. video). Apple's being petty and going against their original philosophy by trying to stop jailbreaking.

No, you're not wrong for wanting those things. Your opinion and vote is just as welcomed as everyone else's. And maybe I voted the same way you did.

But, according to the poll, there are some people who simply don't care about these things. If you don't see the irony in criticizing communism, while at the same time, telling people how they should vote... well, I don't know what else to say. So, I won't.

Before Christmas the Droid 2 will be out and it will be the ultimate iPhone killer. 5.2 megapixel camera, .10 bigger screen with pullout wipe keyboard cleaner, don't forget it has MMS and it connects to itunes.

It's not very polished with search being the best feature IMO (besides being free).

What i'm getting to is Apple's philosophy on putting out functional core apps that work..no matter how long the delay. Would a free beta nav app meet Apple's standards?

I'm also not sure how fair it would be to other Nav developers to integrate google nav in the maps app and basically give a 3rd party app front row access on the iphone's homepage. This is a new and separate function from Maps. And a function that other devs have invested a lot in.

That all said, of course i want to see it fully integrated into Maps.

Theme customization - at least to set different color schemes and a background.

I'm against flash for the iPhone. Too much ads, will take up too much usage, which will kill the already not so efficient battery.

Do you go buy a Camry and then go online and complain to Toyota that it doesn't have all wheel drive when such and such car does so why doesn't the one I just bought?

but apple is not done milking people playing catchup. so with that said. give it time, maybe by 2015 they might innovate something new.

I just laugh hysterically when I see these same comments over-and-over-and-over again. Buy a Droid when it comes out, and ditch your iPhone. See what happens. You will complain just as frequently, but about a whole host of other new issues. "Darn, that physical keyboard is even harder to use than Apple's virtual keyboard. Who'da thunk?" You are just out to get "the man," whoever it might be at any moment in time. That is what jailbreaking is all about. You foiled Apple! You foiled those really bad guys at AT&T! Yet your jailbroken phones have all of their own sets of problems and sub-standard apps that do not meet minimal requirements for stability, function and performance. Yawn.

I look at it like this.

Personally (which means my opinions, cause I know how people get upset) Android is superior to me because of the jailbreak/root comparison.

Whereas all you have to root for is to get Apps2SD or a different ROM entirely (which you'd have to do for ANY phone). With the iPhone you have to jailbreak for the most simplest of things all the way to the most complex which is readily available on Android right out the box.

MMS wasn't available anywhere until 3.0 was released. I'm not talking about when AT&T allowed it on their network.

Also, I demand the best from any device I have. I'm not happy with slurping a company just because it made a great device 2 years ago.

I have an HTC Hero, Copilot stores its data (2 GB of Euopean maps) in the SD card, Spotify stores the downloaded songs in the SD card

To get past the limited on board storage, you only need to root...which is Android's jailbreak (and far easier also. Less risk).

@Joe McG how can you say Apple abuses us. Apple brought the bread to the table, now it's up to others to add the Jamm. MMS was AT&T problem not Apples. As for copy and paste I can't say but like I have always said I don't blame Apple they brought the best to the table and yes they want to add new features later so people will buy a new phone, I can't blame them. Most companies have done that from day one (Tv's, Car's and Computers) but there will always be unsatisfied people.

If you are any sensible person you would say all of the above. The Droid handily whoops the Iphone. If it was an Apple device it would sell 10x more.

I agree with everything you said. Only one point I would change is the browser. The Mobile Safari is great, but I like the browsers that offload most work onto servers making it even more faster and such.

So for that I would LOVE to see the Skyfire browser (optimized for full touch of course) on the "dream phone" should it ever be made.

To put it in my own words though...

The full open source, notification, customization, and cloud sync ability of Android (yeah, a lot from Android is wanted), the main support of WinMo (mainly for choice of browser), Blackberry's messaging capabilities (second to none), and iPhone's glossy, glassy UI (not the UI setup, but how everything has a shine to it).

Take that perfect OS and tie it to a 800Mhz or larger processor (using Cortex A8, Snapdragon, or Tegra), minimum of 512MB RAM, base 3.7in diagonal screen, 800x480 resolution, start onboard storage off at 8GB and raise it to 32/64GB, and make the actual phone practical yet functional.

That would be the ultimate phone...

AND, Apps for Google Voice, Wave, and NAVIGATION!

Hardware wise, much improved screen is essential or i won't care to upgrade. 720p recording though would be good. 64gb storage.

All that would do is eliminate most talk besides openess and customization. Neither of which i care too much about. Anything else is gravy.

I personally like Verizon's network better. The calls were more clear and never had voice mails popping out of nowhere because my signal couldn't be "found" when others were calling me. I'm in north suburbs Chicago land area and my best friends mother works for AT&T but even she admits that she likes Verizon network better around her way of communicating and has kept the service.

Camera, I think all smart phones should have 5MP these days, and although flash isn't that great for any phone I've experienced, it helps a bit.

the true answer would be, android with iphones touch interfaces polish added with blackberry type push email system (which saves a ton of battery life since the network pushes to the phone not the phone doing a wake up / check)

open platform that is not tied to the itunes store, android platform since the kernel source has to be released under the linux gpl. alows alot of homebrew systems.

1 gig processer or better, removable battery, and voice in a slider with a keyboard or touch only device.

the webkit browser on the iphone is fine.

multitasking.

i think that about covers what i would like to see on the next iphone.

if you find yourself wanting many of these features, take the plunge and jailbreak. it is very easy.

Customization and file system would be on top. Plus I love my quicksms so being able double tap home to send a message withot leaving the app is important to me so i'll be sticking to jailbreaking for a while I be.

• External Bluetooth Keyboard (my Palm had that over 5 years ago)

• Some kind of library to let streaming radio, Pandora or Last.fm play in the background. That's the only multitasking I'd used.

• Something that let me accept and register meetings directly from the mail app... That's a big black eye for business users...

Yes there can always be improvement on the iPhone. For me I will take themes and multitasking, that would be fine with me. On the hardware maybe better speakers and mic. Then the developers can do the rest and make some cool apps.

What I really, really want that's not in the list is to have applications access the file system and have a file browser. I'd like QuickOffice to open mail attachments directly, to save non-picture mail attachments to the phone and open them with apps I choose, to organize my pictures and create play lists directly on the phone, etc. The other stuff is nice, file system access is a really big deal.
