iTablet Concept

According to former chief Chinese Googler, Lee Kai-fu, who apparently is well connected with Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, the upcoming iTablet/iSlate looks like a giant iPhone with:

  • an awesome UI packed in a beautiful 10.1-inch screen
  • 3D graphics,
  • virtual keyboard,
  • video conferencing,
  • e-books,
  • Internet and other functions

All this from a connected friend, discussed in his Chinese language post [Google translate link]. Oh, and Apple expects to produce 10 million of them in the first year.

Happy kindling for the fires of rumor, indeed!

Ya ok Mr Chinese googler how much is it??? Also I would like know know if you Mr Ritchie would purchase this Apple itablet/islate aka big ass iPhone.

  2. Rene Ritchie says:

Yes, I'll buy it. And review it. And likely use it more than any human has a right to use at-this-point imaginary technology!

  3. Chrisr says:

I guess i don't see the mass need for this item. sounds neat just dont think i would shell out a grand for this.

  4. Chad Garrett says:

    Bought!

  5. JoBlow says:

Given the infinite uses, depending on how it is set-up:- I'd buy in a heartbeat. Want it bad (if done "right").

  6. Vinny says:

Possible buy? But only time will tell...

  7. Dennis says:

I'm beginning to wonder if Apple has negotiated a special data-only cellular networking plan to go along with this device. I've always thought the potential sales of the rumored Tablet (with the rumored price range) would be limited by the high cost of cellular data plans -- just like the whole MID market is limited by that, IMO. If this particular rumor is true -- that Apple expects to move 10 million units in the first year -- it just makes me think that Apple would have a cellular networking solution to support it.

I've also just read about a new cellular data service over on umpcportal.com which (if it's legitimate) is offering a 3G/2.5G, unlimited, no contract, month to month pay-as-you-go data plan, provided the user purchase their USB modem, priced to compete with the major U.S. cellular network companies. I don't want to shill for an unknown company, but if it's true, that could be an indication of things to come in the near future.

  8. Merf says:

Wait a year. Assuming the reported $1K price take, it will either be half as much or it will be a dud. Given their MacBooks can be had for $1K, this doesn't make much sense to me.

  9. cardfan says:

Like i said before. Probably have no need for it, but i'd be tempted to buy it just the same.

  10. MacEyeGuy says:

I could see it if it can do basic word processing via BT mouse and keyboard. Having used tablets a fair amount (Win XP) text entry via handwriting or virtual keyboard just isn't fast enough for much use.

If this is just gaming/ebooks/web surfing/audio/video, $1k will kill it. $500 will be a huge hit.

What is the saying? Loose lips sinks ships.

  12. Omari James says:

I think the UI used on the new Tablet will be on iphone 4.0 in june/july

  13. miked says:

All you nayers out there...you guys sound just like all those who doubted the Iphone when it first came out. I will definitely get the iTablet/iSlate!

  14. tweger01 says:

This guys gonna get killed for talking about this.

  15. Orion2021 says:

I would get it in a heartbeat. I have wanted a Netbook but have been holding out for the itablet. I like the idea of a 10 inch touchscreen with killer graphics and infinite possibilities. I hope the price is reasonably under a $1,000 but if it packs enough punch I will pay it. Bring it on now!

  16. Joe says:

how much does a MacBook actually cost to make?

  17. RM says:

I hope the applicable UI / OS updates make their way to the iPhone.

  18. Jap says:

Well I slept with Steve's mother and she told me, listen carefully, it's gonna have a display, a version of safari, a battery and an app to view pictures!!!

I am sorry but the 10.1 inch screen isn't anything new to me and "awesome UI"... come on it's Apple, you don't have to be Jesus to predict this. and then "virtual keyboard, ebooks, internet and other functions" I mean wow that's just stunning. A virtual Keyboard in an Apple Tablet, this is huge.

As far as I'm concerned this guy is an idiot who wants to grab some attention.

  19. GoodGuesser says:

Data only plan will allow this baby to work on WiFi and whatever 3G or 3G data plans are out there. With MobileMe or Google Apps or equivalents, and the ability to iChat with video and run iPhone apps, this little beauty will use flash memory for OS and storage, like the iPhone, but starting at 64 GB, like the iPod Touch. With iLifeLite (Tablet Edition) preinstalled, and with MS exchange capability, it will be a killer product. Interface: Touch, Virtual Keyboard with support for Bluetooth alternatives, and speech to text, (Dragon?), this will be a most impressive business tool for office interactivity and presentation prowess on the go. Map my word.

  20. eqqmc2 says:

Hmmm... jailbreaking this iphone on steroids!!! will be priceless!!! I cant wait!!!! and surely the i-dev team will be working this baby too!!!

  21. kev says:

Nice "tactile feedback" keyboard Apple's R&D dept came up with, ohhh but wait didn't RIM first use that technology on their touchscreen phones Storm and Storm2? Which many of you blasted and said you'd never want it? Now all of a sudden Apple uses it and you'll call it innovative.

  22. Still thinking the iSlate is going to be smaller than 10 screen, I think the battery source won't hold up.
