AT&T's 3G Covers Over 230 Million Americans According to Latest TV Spot

According to AT&T's latest commercial, their 3G network covers over 230 million people in the U.S. Finally they have addressed what they failed to address in any of the other countless commercials.

The last few AT&T TV spots seem to be getting a bit better than the previous ones but still in limbo is the commercial where they boast how they are improving their network similar to O2's network. While I personally have no complaints here in Chicago regarding the quality of AT&T's 3G, I have to ask, how is your AT&T 3G network?

Fire away in the comments below!

  1. Vanityeverlastingbonet says:

I use edge so I don't get dropped calls or miss text messages and pick texts l. I live in a supposedly fab 3g(that's what their coverage map states tell me anyways) area but it does not seem like I do.so edge I will stay with Tampa,Florida

  2. Scott says:

It work's great here in Cleveland, Ohio.

  3. Chip says:

Horrible 3g coverage in Atlanta. Runs extremely slow in the city proper. I think they have oversold the iPhone.

  4. MC says:

    No complaints!

  5. Jack Kwack says:

@Vanityeverlastingbonet: If you are forced to disable 3G to have a working phone, call AT&T each month for a credit. They will give it to you.

Ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary (they never actually come on the line, they just cave at that point).

  6. Wilsonator says:

Only two places I can get 3G in my entire state. Des Moines, IA and Cedar Rapids, IA.

  7. SOV says:

    Non existant

  8. chrisr says:

    Still great in Atlanta

  9. Brian says:

    No problems in Gilbert, Az.

  10. Andrew Florew says:

Here in Modesto California it's great! The 3G could be a little faster but I'm content. And I've only had two dropped calls sense I bought the iPhone 3G when it first came out. Overall the service is great.

  11. Shawn says:

No service in most of the area I call "home" here in Va..I've been sadly of thinking of going back to VZW.

  12. Peta says:

I have superb service both in Central NJ and the Fort Lauderdale area, FL.

  13. Johnathon Molloy says:

It is great here on the Island of Oahu Hawaii.

  14. Greg says:

AT&T 3G in Birmingham, AL is excellent

  15. Big dawg says:

Morgantown, WV 3G became available in Summer '09 and it's a great improvement.

  16. Ryan says:

just edge in Mountain Home, Idaho but its still faster than verizons "3G" I get 3G when i go to boise no dropped calls at all

  17. Oboewan says:

I should be getting 3G according to the MAP, but I have EDGE. AT&T is LYING.

  18. Preston says:

No 3G in central Pennsylvania (Williamsport to Selinsgrove and Mifflinburg to Bloomsburg) but, they put a small 3G area in Lewisburg. Mostly due to Bucknell University and Evangelical Hospital.

  19. Dionte says:

    Detroit is drop call city

  20. JB in Dallas says:

Service is horrible in Dallas on iPhone 3Gs..

  21. patrick says:

although on long island its not too bad, but i work in NYC and its REALLY bad there. i can barely make a phone call let alone anything else

  22. patrick says:

and i mean because of the dropped calls

  23. Oliver says:

@russ 3G is all over vermont now.

To Everybody Else: My ATT service has been getting increasingly better. And I mean daily.

  24. Jeff says:

Couldn't be happier here in Baltimore. We traveled to San Juan, PR in the summer and SoCal in December. Had excellent coverage at all times. I understand that those are highly populated areas, but I have yet to have poor coverage.

  25. Joe says:

Again, ATT is using ridiculous numbers to suggest they have lots of 3G coverage. 230 million Americans includes children no doubt, so the number is far less (basically, they take cities x population). One would think Kalamazoo Michigan has 3G ... NOT.

I've complained to ATT up the Presidents office. For 2 years ATT has said 3G would be available soon. They remain in a 20th century mindset if you ask me. They will not commit to anything at this point. I pay $30 a month for basically nothing.

  26. Damien says:

Central South Carolina 3G is COMPLETELY absent, unless you live IN Columbia or Florence. Their coverage even for EDGE is 'sketchy' in any small towns. I have a $700 amplifier and roof antenna and still get dropped calls and less than 2 bars. I am seriously considering jailbreaking when my contract is out ( I can get good Verison 3G reception at my house). Without WiFi the iPhone is an expensive iPod in SC. LOVE the iPhone...., HATE at+t.

  27. Iamiphone3gs says:

Awesome here in upstate NY. Fast full 3g all the time. No dropped calls. Heck I even have 3g in the sticks far from the city. Verizon is horrible here my gf has them and always has a problem getting a signal.

  28. OmariJames says:

Lol That's cool. It's pretty good for me in new York though I did get a dropped call earlier today.

  29. Chris says:

3G coverage in Savannah, Ga. is excelent. Very fast data speeds. I average 2.1 Mbits/sec download and 250 Kbits/sec upload. Haven't had a dropped call in 6 months. 3G weak zones occur but they are few and far between and edge is always there.

  30. Jpwillis says:

3g is great in Memphis TN. I live about a mile outside the city limits and my iPhone signal stays at 4 to 5 bars. I routinely browse the web while talking on the phone with no problems at all

  31. ToonHead says:

    Not all that bad

  32. Gregg says:

    @Joe

Kalamazoo is a spectrum problem as is Montana. They don't own any spectrum in most of the northern states. They have since acquired some off alltels gsm roaming network and it will be made available. People busy AT&Ts balls like they can throw a tower up anywhere they want. You can't do anything without spectrum. Same problem they run into in crowded stadiums. The iPhone gobbles up data and bandwidth at 10 times that of any smartphone. I frequuently use 2-2.5gb. A month. I live in east bay California. Absolutely no problems here at all. Always over 2000kb and I have spikes to over 4000. in a Highly populated area. Fact is AT&T has waaay more smart phones than any other carrier and 14 million iPhones alone aren't at all nice to the network. Kalamazoo Michigan as well as Montana will get better service as soon as those towers are finalized on AT&Ts network. I live right across the street from an AT&T pole climber. The average time to upgrade a tower from edge to 3G is 540 days. Longer if there is no existing service at that location. And it's not ll AT&Ts hold up. It's licensing through the FCC and leasing and permits through the city and state. Then you have to add testing the network to ensure it's not interfearing with any emergency frequencies drive testing the area to make sure the antennas are aimed correctly for optimum coverage. Alot goes into making sure we have good coverage.

  33. Demon_1up says:

Rochester NY , it's all good

  34. Erik says:

Orlando, Florida. No problems here. I work 25 miles from home and I have 3g coverage full 5 bars of reception the whole trip. Im perfectly happy personally.

  35. Luke says:

    Knoxville, TN works great!

  36. Michael says:

In the Baltimore area of Maryland it seems that the bars are a random number generator and do not correlate with quality of connection. It is not unusual that I can go from 5 bars to NO service without even moving. Frequent dropped calls, sometimes takes more than 10 minutes to get out a text message. Love the phone, hate the service.

  37. alex says:

We just got 3G in Fairbanks, AK and it's great.

  38. Janey says:

@Chris/#33 - I was at the Cotton Bowl @ Cowboys Stadium and also at the thrashing the Cowboys gave the Eagles and had no problem with calls or text messages with my iPhone 3GS. Cowboys Stadium actually has cells inside of the facility too, which should offload some of the load from the outside AT&T network. The funny part was a friend with Verizon was experiencing long delays while sending text messages. Same thing happened on New Years Eve too. I sent him one, and he got it right away. He replied but the reply showed up hours later.

  39. Mbannyc says:

No 3G where I live @ Interlachen, FL I work @ Palatka FL an the 3G service there is great. I might have dropped a call maybe 3 X's in 2 years.

  40. Jay B says:

I've had a few dropped calls in Metro NJ, but I've also been able to get a signal where Verizon wouldn't work.

  41. Crunch says:

Glendale, Burbank, L.A. all have great coverage. My 3GS pulls down data at the rate of 1Mbps or better every time I do a speed test (the one from Ookla). We are one of the last markets to get 3G at all several years ago. I have no complaints. We must have great 850MHz coverage (where do I look that up?), as my house which is in a residential and hilly area has full bars at all times.

We'll see yet another big bump in speed with HSPA 7.2, when it will get turned on, which should be very soon.

  42. Paul O'Rama says:

Oliver Says: January 3rd, 2010 at 9:38 pm

@russ 3G is all over vermont now.

3G all over VT? Are you kidding me? Take a look at the map sometime.

  43. Marcus says:

No problems in Athens Ga baby, works fantastic here.

  44. Ken says:

No 3g. Heck I often check to see if I even have any coverage when out and about I NE Minnesota. Wifi keeps me sane.

  45. Scurrilous J says:

Just got my first iPhone and it's been excellent in my midsized northcentral Florida town (Gainesville). But I expected that it would be - I've been with AT&T since they bought Cingular and have always had good coverage in Florida (with the expected exceptions here and there - weird stretches of highway, etc.).

  46. Xskitzo2010x says:

Excellent in Youngstown OH, can't pick it up at all in NW PA at all, such as New Castle, Sharon, etc.

  47. Alba says:

A couple of years ago when we had no power in Maui for three days, verizon performed the entire time while there was no AT&T service at all. I have both and love my IPhone but would never get rid of my Verizon phone because I can rely on it to provide service consistently. Downloading is NOT faster on the IPhone than the Droid.

  48. jason m says:

Here in sacramento ca att coverage is great for me, i always have full bars, and the browsing speed is pretty fast.

  49. Alex says:

I find it amazing that AT&T even tries to compete with Verizon's 3G coverage. In this commercial they state that AT&T covers 9400 cities, when currently there are 19,355 cities in the US...that's not even half! And wait...that does not include the small towns that are not even counted in the definition of "Cities". Also they state that it covers 230 million people...that leaves out over 74 Million people! That is the combined populations of New York, California, and Texas! (Pretty big populations there!!! Verizon has 5 times more 3G Coverage than AT&T (That is square miles not number of people). What does that mean...more coverage for those who do not live around big cities, like me and 74 million other people!

  50. wendy andersen says:

i am having a debate with my husband. what actor is doing the current AT&T 3G network commerical? David Arquette or Luke Wilson.

  51. Kelshe says:

In the great State of Texas, AT&T has crashed the 3G network. No service at all and we have to turn the network off to use the IPhones. So for 220 a month, I get to use the best phone produced, with a service provider that is less than adequate. This falls on Apple's shoulders for partnering with a company that is fleecing Apple customers with empty promises and flashy advertising. Instead of telling us that they cover 230 million Americans, why don't they just provide the service to the tens of millions of customers they are already billing at their monopolistic rates?

  52. You really have a awesome blog going! Keep up the awesome work! Here is one of my favorite websites. Classifieds East Texas

  53. Vladimir says:

I was with AT&T for four days and it SUCKED!!!! I like the iphone but it should be with verizon or sprint or some network that is more reliable. The reception in richmond,va is HORRIBLE!!! I WILL NEVER USE IT AGAIN. SO the next day i switched back to verizon and im happy now.

  54. Mike West says:

I live in Alaska & I was shocked at how great the service was from Anchorage to Valdez. Its a 5-6 hr camper drive & there's a lot of no where in between. There was only a couple spots it did not work but it was only for about 5-10 min. Totally happy with ATT.

  55. Mike West says:

@ Wendy: Here's a hint, "use the force" You can always bing (bing is not google)that type of question.

  56. Christian says:

I am a verizon customer and my gf is at&t. Her service is always spotty and she admits to me that verizon is a better service provider.

I read a few comments that say that at&t exposes verizons bs, well, at&t says that they provide service to 230 million americans. This is pure and utter bs.

The US census bureau states that as of 2 days ago, the population of america was 308 million. This statistic includes ALL americans, meaning elders and infants as well. People who do not have or use cell phones. Saying that at&t serves 230 million americans is pure bs. I don't know why people can't put two and two together.

Leave some kind of comment on this so i see who has common sense. Or just to see what peoople think of my comment.

    Christian

  57. Neil says:

I live in Paris ky. No 3G here. Super slow edge. In Lexington, and now Georgetown there's 3g that works great.

  58. Great site! I am loving it!! Will come back again - taking you feeds also, Thanks.

  59. Michael Ervin says:

We were promised 3G 3 years ago in Newport, TN. They skipped us and installed 3G in Johnson City. Still waiting... AT&T store said he heard we might get it in June or July 2010.. I won't be holding my breath.

  60. Kevin says:

I have an iPhone with AT&T and I carry a Verizon Blackberry for work - and I live in RURAL Northern Montana. No 3G for the iPhone but the EDGE quality is good when you can get coverage, which has been steadily improving in the past year. I've had the iPhone since early 2008 (always in Montana) and my network indicator always showed "AT&T". Now that they're buying the divested Alltel properties my indicator changed to the scrolling "Off Network" message (still EDGE though); this just happened the last weekend of January and I got a nasty-gram from AT&T stating my data use is over 20% off-network and that I needed to call them. When I spoke to them - on my iPhone - the CSR said according to what she was looking at I wasn't [currently] roaming and that she would note my account (yes- the indicator still showed "Off Newtork"). Go figure. Is the Verizon coverage better? Yes, but..... --Verizon phones are way too proprietary and you can't do data and voice at the same time. --Most of the developed world uses GSM. When LTE/4G starts rolling out (this year?), it will be a relatively easy transition for GSM carriers like AT&T. Verizon will have to overhaul their CDMA systems and handset offerings.

The whole coverage debate is kind of pointless here in Montana anyway. We have lots of areas where you can't even get FM radio reception; sparse coverage is just what we deal with. But I would never trade the wide open spaces for crowds; my commute to work is less than 3 minutes and I rarely have to stand in a line for anything! For me, the actual handset itself is very important and I think the iPhone is a pretty tough act to follow.

The FCC licensing maps show that the ownership of the divested Alltel spectrum is complete, but I don't know how that will translate to us end users. If anyone knows when AT&T will "officially" market themselves in Montana please post here.

  61. Doug C says:

Still sucks here in Bloomsburg PA. Edge only. they said it would be here first quarter of 2011. i went to the store and asked why it wasn't here given that the first quarter is over. They came up with a lame excuse about snowfall in Philadelphia this winter and that it would be here by mid July. I asked what year.

  62. Kevin E says:

Here in Kalamazoo, MI AT&T has been promising us 3g for the last two years every time you ask the they tell u they're upgrading and it should be here in the next year I think they just tell you that because they know your interested in the iphone but you know that there is no 3g coverage so to win you they say it will be here in the next year. And Kalamazoo is not some small hillbilly town its one of the major cities of michigan neighboring the second largest city in Michigan Grand Rapids only 30 minutes north so I don't understand why they haven't brought it here too??

  63. Billdo says:

AT&T sucks everywhere and would be in debt or non existant if the iphone never saved them. They have spotty 3G coverage and verizon is the best. AT&T sucks huge D.

  64. TJ says:

    Florence AL

0 3G service in Florence, AT&T needs to fix this quickly or stop selling the Iphone in this area. T-mo appears to have the best data service around here.

  65. Jason says:

    I dont get it

  66. Crystal G says:

Thanks for this post!! I just have to say that im a little upset that i pay premium pricing for a premium iPhone, and have no 3G available in my town or surrounding cities (ie Kalamazoo, MI). I was mislead to make the purchase to begin with. On the commercial (with Luke Wilson) he actually says "kalamazoo, MI" I just spoke to a rep who says late summer... but really? Or are you just telling me that, so I will stick with ATT? And as Keven E previously mentions... kalamazoo is huge... there is no excuse!

  67. DebbieD says:

I live in Gaylord Michigan and contract today ended with Verizon. We have AT&T store here and a Walmart. Neither have a iphone. They both are out of them. I am nervous changing over if the service is bad. I KNOW Kalamazoo is a big town and if your having problems then will I?

  68. Andrea says:

As a verizon Wireless Consultant I would like to inform you all of a GREAT solution to your IPhone problems on AT&T's so called network......ready.....Its been made offical that Apple's IPHONE is coming to Verizon. Realese date???? January 2011. What is an Iphone on AT&T's net work??? Simply an Ipod. Stats: AT&T's coverage covers 230 million americans Verizon's coverage covers approximately 290 million as of April 2010. Lastly, Verizon currently services 97 million customers and is switching to 4G in November 2010. Not to mention that pricing for Verizon is identical to AT&T AND now AT&T caps off your data at 2Gs for $25 and every Gig over is an additional $10 when Verizon is Unlimited for $29.99/mnth AND recent surveys showed the average iphine user uses 6 Gs. Make the switch today.

  69. Matt says:

For over a year and a half I've been hearing from AT&T that we will have 3G in Kalamazoo within 3-4 months. That statement was false when originally made & I have no reason to believe AT&T when they say the same thing now. (Heck, we should not have to be asking, at this stage of the game, when AT&T will be bringing 3G to Kalamazoo -- the question we should be asking is when will AT&T be bringing 4G to Kalamazoo) If Kalamazoo doesn't have at least 3G when my contract is up, the I won't even consider their wireless service, iphone or no iphone. If AT&T considers Kalamazoo such a backwater town that the simple rubes that we are will believe any story they tell us, count me out and count a lot of other people out as well.

  70. michael says:

I am also in Kalamazoo, MI and I am thinking more and more lately that AT&T blows. I was out in Holland MI the other day and they had 3G. We do not. It is like they just throw darts at a map and say, "yep thats is where we will put it". Its really sad.

  71. I find it interesting that so many comments are from Kalamazoo, MI. I live here too and my contract with AT&T is up in a week. I love the iPhone, but AT&T has LIED...let me repeat that...LIED to customers for too long here. I am switching to Verizon. Seriously, I can't believe some lawyer somewhere hasn't started up a class action lawsuit in the Kalamazoo area for the AT&T customers that have been LIED to. I know I would sign on in a heartbeat. Kalamazoo has two universities, a private college, a community college, Pfizer, Stryker, and is located along I-94 between Chicago and Detroit. We are the model for economic renewal in the dismal state of Michigan...and AT&T has no 3G here. I'm switching to Verizon, where I'll have 3G in my pocket that I can connect my iPad to. Best of both worlds without the LIES from AT&T.

  72. Steve T says:

ATT customer service rep just told me that 3G activation for a tower near my home, kalamazoo, would be December 10th. Anyone want to place a bet? My current contract ends in December; no 3G and I'll wait until there is another carrier for iphone.

  73. Tim says:

I purchased iPhones (first generation) for my wife and me in August 2007 in Kalamazoo. When the iPhone 3G came out, I figured I would upgrade when AT&T rolled out 3G in Southwest Michigan. I'm still waiting to upgrade. I too am tired of being told next year, next year, next year. I just hope the iPhone 4 on Verizon in January 2011 rumors are true.

  74. PG Wilson says:

I have been told by two sources (Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids) AT&T shops that 3G will here in November. I agree with many I will belive it when I see it on my iPhone. Come on AT&T no more promises.

  75. Jamie W. says:

I just read an article about a 3G base station being installed to cover the peak of Everest. Still no 3G in Kalamazoo. I hate you AT&T.

  76. Tran Breunig says:

I’d come to grant with you on this. Which is not something I usually do! I enjoy reading a post that will make people think. Also, thanks for allowing me to comment!

  77. Eric B says:

Had a great conversation with wireless salesman at Best Buy in Portage, MI. yesterday who told me that 3G in Kalamazoo, MI has been pushed (again) from November to February 2011. Sure.. Data is just half of the issue! I am at I94/131 and have one/two bars and numerous dropped calls. I love my Iphone but deeply regret going with AT&T.

  78. Bruce M says:

Agreed Eric, the iPhone is AWESOME! Leave it to ATT to turn it into just an expensive GameBoy :-( I've been thinking of getting a Verizon MyFi for data and using Skype for phone calls, dropping ATT all together!

  79. Kevin Y. says:

Haha I found this by trying to search when Kalamazoo would get 3g on google and I love how there are so many Kalamazoo people. Over the summer I was in a tiny town in nebraska with a population of around 700 and I had 3g there. Kalamazoo will never get 3g I swear and if they do it will certainly be about 3 months after I graduate and move away I'm sure.

  80. Bruce M says:

Welcome to our nightmare Kevin! This past summer I was driving down I-55 in rural Illinois. An by rural I mean BFE, cows and corn fields as far as the eye could see. The 3G reception there was GREAT!! I wonder how many cows are pack'n an iPhone these days?

  81. Matt says:

Like Kevin Y., I found this forum while trying to Google Kalamazoo Att 3g, as I am also living in KZoo. Just spoke with a customer service rep who said we're getting 3g by the end of the first quarter of 2011. "Need for speed?" yeah AT&T, I get great speed with edge. Even TMobile has 3g here!

  82. dp says:

The latest I've heard from a friend (AT&T rep) that works in Kalamazoo is march 31st. It appears that AT&T is working from Benton Harbor east along I-94. I've read iPhone users reporting 3G as far east as mile marker 34 on 94.

  83. Bruce M says:

I pay for an unlimited data plan, only to find it to be EXTREMELY LIMITED!! 3g in Kazoo by March 31st? Yea, right! My Verizon/iPhone4 will be here before then.

Good luck AT&T employees! Hope you aren't unemployed for too long!

  84. Cochran10 says:

Rumored date for Kzoo is 3/8/2011, but I don't believe it. I've been told Dec every year since I got my first iPhone. We do have it in Benton Harbor. I work there and it was turned on just before Christmas. Service was out most of the day while they worked on it. Here's to hoping it does come on by the end of March. I'm very tempted to brake my contract and go to Verizon.

  85. Luke says:

Kalamazoo here. Very upset with AT&T. Been told on numerous occasions that 3G will be available in Kalamazoo in the next 6 months for the past 2-3 years. Same for many other people I know. Here's to having 3G tomorrow Cochran10, but I'm not gonna hold my breath either.

  86. Daryl says:

Well I hope something good is going on because my phone is completely worthless at my desk this week, started Monday morning as far as I know and I'd previously been able to use it fine. I can nearly see the tower from my window and I haven't been able to successfully end a call yet this week!

  87. WillP says:

LOL...this is a Kalamazoo forum...I was just in the AT&T store looking into U Verse when a cranky old lady stepped up to the rep next to me and started ranting about how her iPhone is crapping out and has been for the last couple weeks...the guy informed her "...next thursday..."(3/31) I was just thinking maybe the last ice storm knocked out some tower sites...the last 3wks have been ridiculous...can't even get email to push properly...I've been using Mark the Spot to locate outage areas everyday...so I'm just another Kalamazoo victim, hopefully just till "next Thursday..."

  88. Clark says:

I live in Portage and can confirm that I just got 3G service as of today! Anyone else as lucky?

  89. Chris says:

I have it at Work in Oshtemo, here's hoping I have it in Kalamazoo when I get home as well!

  90. Mikechilds54 says:

My town [Louisville, MS] has no ATT 3G coverage. Two other providers do offer 3G here. I am switching.
