Student Makes iPod Explode During Class

A high school student had her iPod explode on her desk yesterday and luckily not a single student was injured. This is not the first time we've heard of exploding iPods or iPhones but this particular case seems to be a little different so don't be so quick to blame Apple. Gizmodo points out that another student has told the true story.
"The iPod did not just explode. It was broken so a kid took the entire thing apart and was rubbing wires against the battery, which became very hot, then exploded. This is not a faulty product that caused a danger to people. This was bored kids, in a classroom with a substitute all week, who found a dangerous way to entertain themselves."
Moral of the story, if you don't know what you are doing and it can be dangerous... don't do it!

Post to your group or blog and log on to NBCWashinton.com to find out about this new iPod technology.
SING ALONG If you like to sing along while listening to your iPod, why not let the rest of us listen? NBCWashington.com has details of a new microphone that can plug right in: http://www.nbcwashington.com/blogs/want-this/Go-Go-Gadget-iPod-Karaoke-85372782.html
Other moral of the story - you can't jailbreak your iPhone by hot wiring it.
bored kids, lol...
What if I want to replace the battery myself. Do u think it would be safe for me to do it myself.

Good way to get someone killed.
Good job jackass.
I was going to comment but Mitchell has it covered.
Seriously, most people, especially kids, don't think about iPods being dangerous on any level. They don't understand about the way electronics work. They put them in their pockets and hold them all the time without realizing that the devices have been engineered to be safe when used properly. The mistakenly assume that applies to all uses. Frankly, I'm surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.
This could have easily happened with another gadget. Since iPods are very common most stories involve iPods.
Why didn't she just light a match an leave it on the battery? Would be a whole lot easier...
Dumbasss. 10x god nobody was injured
Probably a loud popping rather than a shrapnel spitting explosion. Anybody who's ever made a drano bomb knows you can scare the heck out of someone with a loud noise without it actually being dangerous. I bet the worst that could happen was a burn..
Ok, so now that I read the article, it seems that somebody simply commented on the article claiming that the kid tampered with the iPod. Nice to see that all these news sites are using unknown commenters as sources to clear Apple of any fault.
Shame on Gizmodo and shame on engadget and tipb for playing repeater...
Imagine how much of a scare this will be when passengers on a plane find little kids engineering an iPod by themselves. Now they also have another method of suicide bombing! watch out people!!
Just more candidates for the 2010 Darwin Awards.
This just proves my theory that Steve Jobs has put tiny explosive devices in every iPod and iPod in the world. As soon as Apple distributes all said devices to each person on Earth, he will simultaneously detonate them, thus bringing on the Apocolypse and the End of Days.
I lost an year old Nokia E71 a few months because of an exploded battery. Yet Nokia denied any service because they only give 6 months of garanty on the battery. This could happen to any device which runs on batteries, yet I suspect that it happens to cellphones and ipods most of the time because they have a very high range of energy requirements.
Watch they will start banning iPods on airplanes.
Who exactly was this other student who told the truth? Was it an "un-named source"
would like to see the whole story to this before I can believe either side.
It's so nice to know that kids are smart enough to know to rub wires against a battery. "Duh.... I wonder what will happen if I do this?"

Story was fabricated. Not real at all! iPods can't explode
Yes lithium batteries can be dangerous. In an engineering training video in the 90s we were shown a misconfigured lithium battery blow up a desk.
Modern lithium batteries are much safer but if you can get them above about 120C they will "spontaneously vent with substantial energy"
