Other than the fact that this may save the environment of some paper I can't muster up any excitement.

I think it will bolster business for publishers but the impact to the environment will be negligible because they will still print on paper for a decade or so.

I'm actually kind og disappointed that the ePud format seems to get out of fashion even before it had a chance to prove itself. My guess is that it is not as much about the extra functionality custom apps offer but about protecting their content.
