No Cut and Paste in Windows Phone 7 Series. So is it a Smartphone?

Today at MIX10 Microsoft told our sibling site WMExperts that there would be no cut, copy, and paste in Windows Phone 7 Series, which follows on the news of an Apple iPhone-style closed app market and lack of 3rd party multitasking. When the original iPhone 2G debuted in 2007 without cut, copy, and paste, multitasking, and most importantly a third-party app platform, it led certain editors-in-chief who shall remain nameless (though not pictured-less) wondered -- and not unjustifiably -- if the iPhone could be considered a smartphone?

iPhone 2.0 brought the 3rd party apps. iPhone 3.0 brought cut, copy, paste and a host of other "missing" features. iPhone 4.0 may even bring multitasking. Regardless, we thought the iPhone 2G certainly was a smartphone then, and now, and certainly think the same about Windows Phone 7 Series, and Palm webOS when it debuted lacking certain features. It takes an incredible amount of effort to launch a new mobile OS and no company, not Apple, not Google, not even Microsoft have unlimited time, talent, and resources to nail everything in version 1.0. Our question remains, to get cut, copy, and paste (or whatever feature you think is missing), what other feature would you give up? Notifications? The new user experience? There's an opportunity cost to everything.

Of course, when Apple launched iPhone 1.0 it wasn't leaving behind a large existing user base accustomed to many of those now missing features the way Microsoft is with Windows Phone 7 Series. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see if they can grab enough new users to make up for all the ones they're gone to lose. Because, if all those Windows 6.x users are suddenly faced with something new and different, it may not be too far a stretch to go for a different platform entirely. Including an iPhone. Which has cut, copy, and paste and may just have multitasking by then. So to them, to you, potential iPhone switchers:

Welcome! How you doing?

    it's not acceptable, this is windows mobile 7, not windows mobile 1...

  2. WilhelmR says:

    wow.. i thought everyone learned apple's lessong already.. this is now something users expect from their phones..

  3. JM says:

    My Nexus One is filling in quite well. I am not understanding why they are ditching Windows Mobile instead of simply improving it

  4. G says:

    I am so confused by the DieterMeter.

  5. Ericg1840 says:

    Ah not a big deal it will be released in an update. Since having copy and paste I don't really use it too much I could probably live with out it for a little. I think they should have included it with the new OS since all of their competiton already has it but it seems like they have alot more new features their still figuring out

  6. sting7k says:

    Maybe they are also stealing Apple's method of releasing the 1.0 device/software with few features and then add in more stuff for 2.0 release.

  7. Hang says:

    @visi this is an iPhone blog n an iphone basically an apple fan page .... So if u r not interested in apple just get away ... No ones is forcing u come n read the blog.... N this goes to all iPhone haters ..... If you all hate so much then why would you all spend the time on reading and replying .... Just switch your phone ... Get a new one .... N it is the universal truth tht iPhone is still the best phone in world ..... N it's undeniable .....

  8. MintOreo says:

    @Visi

    Seriously. I don't understand why IPB has an article every time a new smartphone comes out. You don't see the guys over at Android Central, WMExperts, Palm Central and Crackberry put up stuff about the Iphone. So, why include stuff that isn't Iphone related?

  9. Joe McG says:

    I'll just download clippy. Take that!

  10. frog says:

    Windows Phone 7 is interesting to me, alot more than WebOS or Android are ever likely to be. I doubt I'll switch over, as I use a Mac - and am heavily invested (and enjoy) the iTunes environment. Lack of multi-tasking is a total non-issue, I hardly even need it on my MacBook (if push notifications ran on OSX, I wouldn't need it at all...)

    As for the comments about why is this on TiPb. Well duh! It's a major new competitor, and probably the best one we've seen in what - 3 years? And the iPhone platform has copped absolute hell for the things which were missing, but are now likely to be front and centre of the newest mobile OS out there (3 years on...)

  11. Desmond says:

    I can't wait to here some major iPhone news. 3.2 date for the iPhone? Perhaps April 3?

  12. MintOreo says:

    @frog

    And yet, none of the other smartphone round robin sites bothers listing things Iphones have or don't have on their front page. Or any other platform, for that matter. Ever see Crackberry talk about WM? Nope. Android about Pre? Nope. Iphone about all the other platforms? Yep. All the time.

  13. HungWell says:

    This really isn't good news for iPhone fans. Lack of innovation by competitors = lack of incentive for Apple.

  14. cardfan says:

    @MintOreo

    Perhaps the round robin sites should start writing about the competition. It's always great to see viewpoints from a certain iphone perspective.

  15. Derek says:

    I agree with Visi.

  16. Jerry G says:

    @HungWell,

    One word....Google.

  17. Rene Ritchie says:

    Apple releases one iPhone a year. When it does, the other SPE sites write about it (often to make fun of it, see all the posts about the iPhone getting cut and paste last year!). Google, Microsoft, Palm, RIM, etc. release far more OS and hardware updates during a year, so proportionately even if we only cover the major ones from a competitive point of view, it looks like a lot.

    The iPhone doesn't exist in a vacuum, neither does Apple. So we'll keep on looking at other platforms an how they compare and compete. If that's not to your taste, please do skip ahead, or back to another article. Plenty of iPhone stuff to talk about.

  18. Orangensaft says:

    Nice graphic. It expresses nicely what seems to be an all too common but necessary topic of discussion - what can a smartphone (iPhone) not do (notifications- well, sorta? ha ha)?

  19. Jerry says:

    LOL @ Iphone fanboys.. agreeing that the Iphone isn't a smartphone only when it's convenient to them..

    no copy and paste and no multitasking... sounds like a dumb phone to me..

  20. Hang says:

    @Rene I appreciate ur hard works ... N letting us all know bout whts goin on aroun.... N yes it is always appropriate for tipb to publish n article tht is viewed as a possible serious compeitor to iPhone... N you all you guys why do you all make a big deal out of it.....

  21. Gino from the Bronx says:

    I can't imagine my iPhone without copy and paste. I use it all the time. Apple should of included this feature in 2.0 NOT take them an additional year in 3.0. Just like MMS.

    Not sure why windows would leave out copy and paste at a time like this where Android is breathing down WinMo's neck.

    Call me a Apple fanboy, but the iPhone is just in another league. With that said, I shouldn't have to jailbreak either!

  22. Crunch says:

    Hah...what a joke. I used to be a Windows Mobile fan before I defected to the BlackBerry before I defected to the iPhone (3GS and OS 3.1). How can such a basic feature (can we even call this a feature!??) not be in the 7th version of an operating system??? Apple took long enough, granted, which is why I never bothered until OS 3.1 (3.0 had something else missing), but at least they got it right in their third model. What a joke. Plus the name blows: Windows Phone 7 Series. Laammee...

  23. MintOreo says:

    @Rene

    The point isn't whether or not the other SPE sites put up articles about JUST the Iphone (which, let's be honest, is somewhat fair, as the Iphone IS the bar). It's that of the major SPE sites, IPB is the only one that actually regularly puts up articles about other platforms. WP7 is just as much a competitor to Iphone as it is to Android, Blackberry, Nokia and Palm. Yet, you usually don't see them sticking up articles like this little gem.

    I would assume people come here to hear more about Iphone news, tweaks and updates. (That's why I come here anyways) Not about how the other platforms are doing this and that. Sure, it's nice to know what the other guys are doing, but this site is the only one that's so ridiculously conscious about it, to the point of insecurity.

  24. Wil says:

    Was the iphone a smart phone for the 1st 2 years? Gimme a break...fan boys?!

  25. Dil do says:

    Hey wil why do you post stupid comments. It's an iPhone blog site of course people are going to defend the iPhone just like of you go on the droid site they defend the droid or crackberry etc . Thier is nothing wrong with feeling passion . I'm sure your a fanboy of something .

  26. Dimwit says:

    @ mintoreo, are you sure you come here to read iPhone info? It seems like you come here to b/tch. Sincerely, Dimwit

  27. Gino from the Bronx says:

    MintOreo, you couldn't be more wrong.

  28. Longmeat says:

    Articles like this is why I started hating this site. The apple dicksucking is disgusting . If the lack of copy/paste doesn't make the Win7 a smartphone, then the iPhone just became a smartphone after 3.0

    You guys are getting worse with each article.

  29. SheiknetChris says:

    @Longmeat: I think you are missing the point. First off it is just a little tongue-in-cheek. Secondly, it simply raises the questions and the double standards that APPLE-HATERS (this is the opposite of the fanboi phenomenon) have rained like s**t on the iPhone parade for years, and continue to do so.

    Nowhere in that blog post does it say Win 7 is NOT a smart phone. It just raises comparable questions. As for hating this article and site, there are other articles and sites!

  30. Mike says:

    LOL at anyone on an Apple site putting down MS for not have cut and paste. The hypocricy.

  31. Yet, you usually don’t see them sticking up articles like this little gem.

  32. basur says:

    As for the comments about why is this on TiPb. Well duh! It’s a major new competitor, and probably the best one we’ve seen in what – 3 years?
