Daring Fireball often blurs the line between carefully concealed wink-nudge leak and flat out facetious commentary, so with that in mind John Gruber has this to say about the 4th generation iPhone (which still won't be called iPhone 4G!):

  • Apple A4-family system-on-a-chip. Nothing on whether that would be the ARM Cortex A9 multicore CPU with brand new PowerVR SGX GPU we've been drooling over, however.
  • 960x640 display. That would be bigger than even the bigger DROID Google Android phone, but fit perfectly with the mediocre pixel-doubling announced for current iPhone apps on the iPad's 1024x768 display.
  • Front facing camera. Which would mean all those iChat Video rumors we've been hearing about forever would finally come true, albeit after the HTC EVO 4G broke the barrier.
  • 3rd party multitasking in iPhone 4.0. Yeah, that one we've got covered going way back. Which just don't know how they're going to implement it yet?

Again, this could just be Gruber cracking wise at the WSJ's Verizon-rumoring expense. However, a lot of this might also be considered obvious things Apple "has to do" to stay competitive. Yet Apple hasn't exactly been pushing the hardware specs since the iPhone 2G back in 2007. Steve Jobs was rumored to have said the next iPhone will be an A+ upgrade. Is the above a good start?

UPDATE: Engadget says they're hearing it will launch on June 22 and be called the iPhone HD. Hey, that sounds familiar, doesn't it?

  1. Oliver says:

How about an 8 megapixel camera?! I'd buy it for sure!

  2. Craig says:

They better implement all of this or I'm going to Android, I'm getting so bored of my iPhone 3G

  3. jman says:

how about a different interface completely?

  4. WilhelmR says:

Just give me multitasking and a useful file explorer.

  5. killer says:

how about the ability to reply to a text within an app. Completely bonkers we can't do that now without jb.

  6. MrAnonymous says:

Really hope the screen size will be on par with the HD2.

  7. Tenor146 says:

WOW. A display with that kind of resolution! I'd drool over such a thing. Good thing I held back on the 3GS. I'm buying this one!

  8. Freiteez says:

If all of this is true I'm pre ordering!

  9. bsforever says:

Here's to hoping that apple doesn't stick it to us like it did with the ipad (ie an overhyped underspecced letdown)...I'm more interested in the 4th gen iPhone than the former

  10. Diordon22 says:

iPhone 4g 4.3 inch screen, front facing camera 5.0 pix, 720 rec, hdmi out, if not htc hd2 or Evo here I come. By the way I know the HD 2 doesn't have 8.0 pix camera or hdmi out 720 p. It's destroys the iPhone.

  11. Gregg says:

Wilhelm, its got a file explorer, its called Mobile me, 20GB online cloud storage. accessable from the iPhone app. I use it the same way as file storage.

  12. Inigo Montoya says:

    @Gregg

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  13. Caballera says:

I'm sure the only one that'll come true is the Apple A4 processor.. Every year everyone gets all hyped up and every year we're more or less underwhelmed.

  14. CJ says:

I'll believe it when I see it. Caballera hit the nail on the head. Almost none of these rumors ever pan out. I would like nothing more than for all this to be true however history has made me quite the pessimist.

  15. dean says:

How about the ability to complete a phone call? Will that be in the new iPhone?

  16. dave01568 says:

i like the way you said 3rd party multitasking.most people think the iphone don't have it but it dose

  17. Random says:

    @dean

No, I don't think the iPhone will be on Verizon...

  18. BBYM says:

@ dean: Indeed that would be good change whatsoever it would require Verizon to have the iPhone...

  19. CJ says:

You guys are too funny. I hate Apple and I hate AT&T...they always f@ck up a business order for a land line.

In saying all that, I own an iPhone and love it plus I rarely have a dropped call. How ironic is that?

  20. duvi says:

Lmao... What's Google's number for returns. Got this NexusCrap to return. Haaaa.

  21. Cha says:

I just hate it when people think that the more pixels the better the camera..That is not the case...You only need megapixels if you are planning to blow it up? The iphone size is big enough!!! HD....Oh yeah sorry iPad u r not getting my $$!!!!!

  22. CupertinoSweat says:

it has to be faster than 1 GHZ!

  23. madLyfe says:

if they are going to actually do front facing camera, they are going to have to put a better speaker in there.. even with volume boost its still almost impossible to hear unless your in a completely silent room...

  24. Diane says:

Just give me a service provider that will allow me to talk on my iphone. AT&T sucks!!!

  25. Nick says:

Knowing Apple, they'll change the color of the logo on the back and call it a new iPhone.

  26. Drake says:

Still needing some carrier (VERIZON) information and some specs of a better camera. I can't wait to switch though. I've had my 3G for 2 years now and it is starting to get on its last days. The battery can't last very long, the screen is scratched up, the camera sucks, and it's starting to get slow and clunky.

  27. Merf says:

Can they actually make it work as a phone in Phoenix? If I don't hear significantly better call quality, I am going to back to an iPod and a flip phone.

  28. Gino from the Bronx says:

@Drake buy a new phone you cheap fkuc

  29. Leet says:

Another Reason to look forward to the summer iChat :)

    @Gino

some ppl don't see a need to upgrade the 3Gs isn't really worth an upgrade in my perspective

  30. Stephen says:

I'd live to see what the phone will have in store but having only purchased my 3gs in October I'm nowhere near a place where an upgrade would be affordable. I sit comfortably on my 3.1.3 with jb, love my phone and all the apps that made it that way. I could see apple finally giving color choices like they did with nano. I wouldn't mind my phone to match my nano 5th gen. That shade of purple is so awesome.

  31. iPhoneMIlk says:

I switched to the Nexus one, and im switching back. I'm so @#@3ing sick of Android.. sick of it..

All of their Apps fail hard, and if you're a user of Facebook?? FORGET IT...

If you like facebook at all, and even know what it's like on the iPhone, DON'T ever switch to android, you will hate it with a passion.

I'm so sick of android right now, can't wait till this summer.

  32. BBCasper says:

    Ha...ha.

  34. June 22nd, huh? before WWDC?

  35. I am telling everyone who has an iPhone... if you are just using the phone for normal cell/entertainment uses, the DROID doesn't come close. Not to mention Verizon's network is HORRIBLE. The voice quality is reprehensible compared to AT&T's, it's just truth. The only thing that Android software has that is 10X better than iPhone is Google Maps, the free navigation is bad as*!

The Marketplace sucks, the facebook app is mediocre compared to the iPhone app and multitasking is ok but I believe multitasking in the next iPhone update will be 10X better. Oh yah and the GMAIL integration is also waaaay better than iPhone and IMAP. It's one of the major reasons I kept the phone, seriously. I run a small business and the difference of getting an email right away and 5 minutes late makes a big difference.

Trust me, stick to iPhone. Oh and explain to me how Youtube is Google's baby and the video quality sucks on the DROID? I did a side by side comparison with the iPhone and DROID and iPhone's quality is way better. So, I don't know who these people are saying the DROID is an iPhone killer but they are sadly mistaken.

    -Greg

  36. Neo says:

    Well said Greg!

  37. impaler says:

I went and got a 3GS. I'm staying put. For now.

  38. Alex says:

Real or fake info I really don't care!!! I'm just happy to see something not ipad related. (nothing against the ipad it's just I'm kinda getting sick of just reading about it...)

  39. Edie says:

I rather have an iPhone on the Sprint network than on Verizon Wireless. & front facing camera? Psh. Please. Maybe on wi-fi, not an a network though.

  40. Vic says:

A multicore processor? Does anybody honestly believe apple is going to make the iPhone more powerful than the ipad? Get real. If anything they will slightly upgrade the clock speed and use the advances in the ipad processor to improve battery life ( what sells better: 1ghz multicore processor or 10 hour Internet surfing on wifi).

Also apple will probably up the camera res too but not that much. If anything they will focus on image quality, post processing and flash.

Everyone is throwing out these ridiculous specs and it's not going to happen! Apple will make some solid upgrades and maybe throw in video chat but I wouldn't put any money on it.

  41. Nigel Tufnel says:

Um, I hate to tell you this Gruber, but 960x480 is not "double resolution" of the current iPhone. It's 480x320, a 1.5 aspect, therefore double resolution would be 960x640. If Apple comes out with the next iPhone in that resolution I'll eat my MacBook Pro.

  42. thedeadbaby says:

All I want from the next iPhone is 64GB, a better processor (it doesn't have to be an extreme boost, because i don't think my 3GS is sluggish at all, but would still like more speed). I would also like to see a better camera with flash. Apple should see the amount of camera apps in the app store as a slap in the face. I want to say that I would like the HTC evo screen size, but then I realize that my iPhone can barely make it a day with a full charge the way I use it. There's no way in hell it would ever survive the day with the EVO's screen. I would also like google navigation. I doubt that will happen though given the state of things. Nothing major, just some realistic wants.

  43. Orangensaft says:

Just thinking about this logically, Apple probably always intended for the iPhone to have a front facing camera for Mobile iChat video chat (including interoperability with those on a Mac with iSight). Why though has it taken so long for them to do it this time? Well, let's see: greatest two barriers to success story with mobile iChat are (1) Not enough people use iPhones (there are now 75M+ users) and (2) AT&T network can't handle it (they've been aggressively upgrading the network). With these two obstacles at least partly addressed, now is better than ever to introduce the iPhone HD with Mobile iChat.

  44. Brye says:

Who really needs a front facing camera anyway? Sure, you'll have it but only people with the new iPhone, HTC EVO, or computer will be able to do it, and forget about using 3G for that. The iPhone's screen is already 3.5 inches at 480x320, my Eris is the same res at 3.2 inches, so I'm guessing the'll either make the pixels smaller or keep the same res.

My forecast: -Faster processer w/ better battery life (A4 likely but not really) -New casing (Aluminum or Plastic) -Larger screen RES, size of actual screen will stay the same or be bumped to 3.7 inches -OS 4.0 will bring gestures, revamped App's, Background image on home screen (possibly a total overhaul but unlikely) -Better camera (5.0 max), PhotoBooth filters (hopefully) -Something that will make everyone fall over in their chairs, and slap themselves. Apple is unpredictable.

What people don't realize, is that Apple (probably better than anyone else) knows not what we want, but what we need. a 4.3 inch screen is great and all, but it's impractical. Apple knows what is needed and what will sell. If they give you the iPhone 4GHD, it'll be:

    1. hard to top next time around
    2. too expensive to produce, meaning a more expensive phone and less sales
    3. impractical, the novelty will wear off in a week.

Although most people want all this stuff, 8 MP camera, front facing camera for iChat, larger-res screen, yada yada yada, it's not gonna happen. Trust Apple, they know best ;D

  45. Hang says:

    Agree with u Greg

  46. AlfieJr says:

TiPb misquotes Gruber about the new iPhone resolution. he reports it will be 'doubled' to 960x640, not 960x480 as stated in bold type above. which would retain the 3:2 aspect of course.

    bad TiPb!

how even that correct resolution would "fit perfectly with the mediocre pixel doubling" for current iPhone apps on the iPad is not explained by TiPb. probably because that statement makes no sense at all.

simply doubling (quadrupling, actually) the number of pixels used to display the same image at a unchanged app resolution on the same size screen does not make a dramatic difference. but smart upscaling processing will enhance the edges, etc. which can be important for text, and color saturation too. it will certainly look better to the naked eye. this fits with 'mediocre'?

yes, of course the iPad could also display a new iPhone app with that 'doubled' resolution within its larger 1024x768 frame without resorting to artificial "pixel doubling," and it would certainly look a lot better than one four times smaller (in area) at 480x320 with a lot of empty space around it, although there would still be some extra empty space around the margins. how does that fit with 'mediocre'?

but simply blowing iPhone apps up in size this way, even if the resolution were decent, does not produce good iPad apps. the UI is clumsy and it wastes space.

Apple has already solved the problem by allowing for universal apps that actually contain two different apps, one optimized for each display format. why would it add a third display resolution to this mix?

Gruber didn't offer any details on all this. so i guess TiPd decided just to jump to some silly mediocre conclusion.

  47. zero credibility says:

@edie, 3g network is perfectly capable for videochat .. how do i know ? i've been using it ..

  48. Rick says:

lol. silly iphone fanboys. you need android os slapped on that iphone of yours to really compete in today's phone war. iphone was a cute novelty but no run along and let the big boys play

  49. thedave says:

    I call bollox on this.

  50. iDavey says:

    @Greg

In regards to the YouTube comment, all I have to ask...have you ever pressed the menu button while watching a YouTube video? Because your comment suggests that you haven't, and you should really learn how to use the phone before slamming it. Facebook...not really Google's fault seeing as the app is what the developer makes it. App is lacking? Confront Facebook on it. Multi tasking, I agree. Even as an Android user, I can admit Apple has a way of taking existing features and making them more intuitive. I'm not saying with blind conviction that it will be better (only idiots do that, no offense), but there is a high chance that it might be. Last but not least...cell carrier, I don't get why that is ever an arguing point. None is better than the other definitely. It boils down to location and coverage in said location. Or ones experience with certain carriers in the past. Some people rather have better customer service than the hottest phone. Every carrier has their nasty CS rep, but some people are luckier than others.

In the end...no phone is better than the other. You just pick what you like. The second grade bull of "my daddy is better than yours" mentality is pretty old don't you think.

  51. Dude says:

4G technology! What's the point of using 3G when a smartphone is supposed to stay connected?!?!?!

  52. HungWell says:

When they dissect this phone they'll find that it had spaces for all of these things but Steve Jobs left them out at the last minute because he didn't like the way they were implemented.

  53. Gino from the Bronx says:

Meh, just a link bait blog. Apparently it's worked, look at all the comments thus far.

Nobody really knows anything about the next iPhone. Supposedly the people in the know for the ipad couldn't of been more off with their Predictions last year.

    KNOWBODY KNOWS!!!!

  54. Keith says:

Would it be too much to ask for LIGHT for the camera? I'm out clubbing and would at least like to take a photo for my Facebook page instead of this dark glob I get.

  55. jtz5 says:

I would like a front facing camera so I can videochat with my daughter while traveling for work. But, I think the novelty of iChat will wear off quickly and people won't be iChatting all the time (just like the novelty of MMS wore off, at least for me).

  56. Who Dat says:

  57. Orion2021 says:

Here is the Wall Street Journal article talking about the new phone:

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304370304575152242601774892.html?mod=WSJhppMIDDLETopStories

  58. Edie says:

@zero creditability Yeah, you yourself. but how many other people say that they're using video-chat TODAY! Hardly anyone. Now take +5 million people, on a network or two using video chat. How much that'll crash the network itself. Let alone, at&t can't handle that much data. Verizon is triple the slowest data than at&t and yet they still think that they'll be able to handle it. Maybe they will, but how slow their internet is right now, i don't think so.

  59. Yobad says:

I can buy most of this. I believe the "iPhoneHD" will use a scaled back version of the iPad's A4, it will not have a front facing camera untill the actuall "iPhone4G", and it will have a bump in screen res but just not that much. Oh and I honestly don't see this thing ariving until mid July this year with an anouncement of iPhone OS 4.0 in mid April.

  60. Piper says:

@ All you cry babies: Not all devices can satisfy every user. So buy the device you want and shut up about it! Apple is going to do what they think is best for thier business & all the childish crying on this forum will not change that. Besides those adults here are tired of all the crying.

  61. johnsen says:

Q: Is it true that the next Iphone Generation will have a HD Display (higher resolution) and a Front-Camera?

    Steve Jobs :

    Yep!

    sent from my Iphone

  62. creiij says:

I knew it was a good thing to wait! I've been wanting to get an iPhone since February but I've really tried to hold off so I could see if a new one were coming. Good thing I've managed because it sucks to buy a new phone only to have it replaced in a few months =)

As for the rumors, really looking forward to seeing that phone and screen.

The upgraded processor is looking great but the iPhone 3GS is really fast compared to other phones.

Multitasking is ok but honestly there are only a few apps that needs multitasking, like Spotify. Most other apps is enough if they remember where you left off because I have multitasking on my Omnia and it mostly sucks, you have 5 apps running and it's slow as hell, and the battery drais like a... drain...

Front face camera... well, I don't really use it and unless you can get an app to do that service using data traffic, like Skype, it's really useless because the cost of video calls are 8 times as high as normal calls here in Sweden using my current provider.

Anyway, really looking forward to this and if they do it right I'm sure to get one =)

  63. jtz5 says:

    @johnsen-

I have tried getting replies from Steve Jobs regarding AVRCP support in 4.0. Since you are so close to him, do you mind emailing him and asking for me?

  64. csullivan1980 says:

It could be just me but I am a little confused why Apple would launch a new iPhone almost a week before the WWDC 2010. Does that seem a bit odd to anyone else?

  65. OneOfDaKine says:

Time will tell... Just gotta wait a see...

  66. jimmy t says:

haha wow. it smells like...the month of april?. could it be coming soon?? nah, im just thinking to myself here, carry on...

  67. jim says:

I just got the 3GS last month. signed a 2 yr deal with ATT. How much out of pocket do you think it will cost to upgrade? Didnt they have a discounted upgrade last year when the 3GS came out?

As for upgrades, I only care about multitasking (I want my Pandora back) and single mail box

  68. Dexter says:

    @Merf

Where the heck are you using your iPhone? I live in Phoenix and pretty much have 5 bars of 3G wherever I go! :|

  69. The Teacher says:

    @Nigel Tufnel

"Um, I hate to tell you this Gruber, but 960×480 is not “double resolution” of the current iPhone. It’s 480×320, a 1.5 aspect, therefore double resolution would be 960×640."

I laughed aloud when I read this. :|

Nigel, you have horrendous math skills. Did you ever multiply those numbers and see what they added up to? Besides, that's the only way you can determine the pixel count, aka the "resolution". Here, let me help you...

    480 X 320 = 153,600 pixels

    960 X 480 = 460,800 pixels

As you can see 460,800 pixels is more than double the resolution of 153,600 pixels, therefore it stands to reason that 960 X 480 is more than double the resolution of 480 X 320.

You can't just simply double each number in the equation and think that the result will also be double. How old are you? No... really?

  70. oliver ferriss says:

everything is right except the display, it will be 800 x 450. Check this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nDd7A4BAYc

  71. Mitchell says:

That loser saying you need android OS shouldn't be on this blog, what a loser who can't afford a iPhone haha Loser.

  72. Jerry says:

Why do people want 64GB on the Iphone??

  73. Trent says:

    * WRONG! It's China Unicoms 2010 upgrade - which runs a different version of CDMA than the US.

Oh hey, remember all those rumors yesterday about a new iPhone coming out for Verizon that had everyone all excited? Well, analysts, wet blankets that they are, had to go and ruin the fun. Maynard J. Um, an analyst who is only indecisive in name, was quick to deem a Verizon launch "unlikely" for this year, with CDMA iPhones possibly going to China Telecom or Japan's KDDI. [AppleInsider]

  74. Dennis says:

Chasing iPhone rumors is like chasing a cocaine high.

  75. ricardo says:

Well to bad I didn't hear any of this sooner. I was a dedicated and full supporter of iphone having owned 2 generations both the original and the 3G. I recently made the jump to the Blackberry Bold 9700. Apple needs to wow us or we will slowly jump ship. I am not gone all they way though. Just trying something fresh.

  76. Narg says:

Multitasking... Don't want. Won't use. Stupid addon.

  77. Bryan says:

The iPhone is going to run horribly if it ever ends up in verizon, their 3G speed is horrendus and they will have a long drawn out transition to 4g

  78. Mitchell says:

iPhone on verizon would suck. Why? Because you won't be able to talk and surf the web at the same time. Idk if 4g will support that, but I'm pretty sure 4g won't be everywhere? Am I right or wrong??

  79. Mister Brooklyn says:

iphone 4 will have most of stuff we hope for because every year apple tries to get back on top.. they already tease us with 7 tentpoles on April 8th keynotes. if you look carefully, on the apple website, he didn't mentioned all the tricks (example: "in app sms"= quickreply (in the hack side)... this phone suppose to attack the following phones, so actually this phone will most likely be the best phone out of the 4... attacking which phones: nexxus one, window 7 phone, palm pre plus, droid, psp/touch screen phone by Sony.. Game Center on the 4.0 will harm ds, dsi and psp sales.... when was the last time you saw a person playing with this unit... playstation psp cannot compete against Apple, because the developers are creating the games that harming Sony... to add, all the games are affordable...psp games are not...

Okay Window 7 phone preview looks good and they went at apple stating you can have a bunch of apps, but you can only open one at the time... Apple reply back hard with multitasking and a bunch new tricks... it making me go back and compare which phone would you buy now the iphone 4 or windows 7 phone....

THERE ARE MANY HOT PHONES!!! BUT ONLY APPLE GOT CUSTOMERS SLEEPING ON DIRTY STREETS FOR DAYS TO GET THEIR PHONES... AND THE LINES FOR THAT PHONE STAY PACKED... TELL ME WHAT PHONE CREATE LINES LIKE APPLE??? NONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE....

    iphone hd =

yes it will be close to or will by HD (because they going against the window 7 phone in that direction) 5.0 megapixel camera (no reason to go higher, because is all about the lens not megapixels) isite finally will be on the iphone (i gather it will be 2.0.. would be great if it was 3.2) saying that (ichat will be out)... they didn't show it off in april 8th keynote because they need to show the iphone in action... You will not do video chat on a phone call with any phone carrier... however the keynote they are more focus on skype in this feature... if you want to chat with while viewing the person, skype will be the key... expect the next keynote skype shows off that trick...

I LOVE WHEN PHONES GO AT APPLE AND SHOW OFF HOW THEY ARE BETTER... YOU SIMPLY TELLING APPLE TO BEAT YOU ON THE NEXT PHONE...

ANDROID COMES OUT WITH MANY PHONES, THAT'S COOL.... IT SIMPLY SHOWS ME A BUNCH FAILED PROJECTS...

ON THE SOFTWARE SIDE, YOU KNOW APPLE IS TAKING IDEAS FROM JAILBREAKERS SIDE AND SIMPLY MAKE BETTER AND MAKE OFFICIAL ON THE APPLE SIDE.. SO ALL THESE BEAUTIFUL TRICKS YOU SEE ON THE IPHONE 4.0, YOU HAVE TO THANK JAILBREAKERS ON THAT

  80. Brian P says:

I would love to see a bigger screen, something like the htc evo 4g and a higher quality display like the rumored 960 by 640..everything else is bonus for me

  81. nutrients says:

I’ve been visiting your blog for a while now and I always find a gem in your new posts?

  82. Jolie Lybarger says:

I have to say that for the last couple of hours i have been hooked by the impressive posts on this website. Keep up the wonderful work.

  83. Nikole Timperman says:

Hello, I love playing this game, but so far I only have the Lite version. I think the game will look and feel better if you add a quick animation for when the pipe rotates. It will make the game feel more smooth.
