TSA: Leave iPad in your baggage unless we tell you to take it out
The TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) have deemed Apple's new iPad magical enough to pass through airport security scanners mostly without your having to remove it from your travel bags. Mostly.
The Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday that in general you should not need to remove your iPad from your bag. That's because it's relatively small and people who carry the device often don't have bulky accessories like plugs and external drives that clutter the image when computer bags are screened.
Screeners may still ask you to remove your iPad if they can't get a clear image of the device.
You might also find a few screeners not yet familiar enough with the policy or the iPad, so again, leave your iPad in your bag unless and until you're asked by the men and women in uniform to take it out. Then take it out.
We haven't heard about other countries yet, but if you have let us know in comments!

Feirst!
Wow - reason number 189 why I need an iPad.
I have a few friends that work for TSA. I'll ask and see if I can get my hands on a policy letter from them.
iPads should not be allowed on planes. they're dangerous and can cause accidents. it is not normal. but the government people have their eyes glued closed. when it's too late they'll all start blaming each other. until then i'll take the bus.
What??
That is ironic to me. I kept my Kindle 2 in my bag and the TSA people got angry at me about it and told me that if it is bigger than a cell phone it is a laptop and has to come out, and put me through the 3rd degree screening after that.
I'm flying in two weeks and I will be pulling mine out of the bag. Don't want them thinking I'm hiding something and end up getting strip-searched.
@Jhunt
Anything you can do to increase the long lines at the security gates will be greatly appreciated.

Wished we had a "Soup Nazi" kinda policy. "You take iPad out??!! You obviously can't follow instructions. NO FLIGHT FOR YOU!"
Well at least the TSA is ahead of the game this time. I wonder how many iPads Steve had to send them to get this ruling?
I distinctly remember Macbook Air users getting perp-walked simply for showing up with one: http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/10/tsa-cant-believe-macbook-air-is-a-real-laptop-causes-owner-to/
Amazing what a few bribes, cough er, I mean, demonstration units sent to headquarters can accomplish.
Good news for my trip coming up. Also, I want that iPad case!!
Who makes that case?
interesting. even more reason to take the leap. is this the case for all tablets?
Can't wait to buy a new iPad, it looks great!
