After drooling over the lost/stolen iPhone HD/iPhone 4G and mocking the incident on the Daily Show last night, Jon Stewart went after Apple and Steve Jobs, accusing them of losing their childlike sense of wonder and harshening his mellow both:

"Apple - you guys were the rebels, man, the underdogs. People believed in you. But now, are you becoming the man? Remember back in 1984, you had those awesome ads about overthrowing Big Brother? Look in the mirror, man! …It wasn't supposed to be this way - Microsoft was supposed to be the evil one! But you guys are busting down doors in Palo Alto while Commandant Gates is ridding the world of mosquitoes! What the [redacted] is going on?!

…I know that it is slightly agitating that a blog dedicated to technology published all that stuff about your new phone. And you didn't order the police to bust down the doors, right? I'd be pissed too, but you didn't have to go all Minority Report on his ass! I mean, if you wanna break down someone's door, why don't you start with AT&T, for God sakes? They make your amazing phone unusable as a phone! I mean, seriously! How do you drop four calls in a one-mile stretch of the West Side Highway! There're no buildings around! What, does the open space confuse AT&T's signal?!

…Come on, Steve. Chill out with the paranoid corporate genius stuff. Don't go all Howard Hughes on us."

This is mainstream media (don't tell Stewart we called him that) hitting Apple where it hurts.

US/Flash only Hulu after the break!

Steve Jobs posts "Thoughts on Flash": why you'll never see Flash on iPhone or iPad
  1. Thedeadbaby says:

I don't like John Stewart, but what he said was dead on. Apple needs to take a step back to remind themselves of how they got to where they are now.

  2. duvi says:

So this dummy is on at&t, but it drops calls on him all the time? Yeah, he's a dummy for needing the iPhone that bad that he has to settle for an (according to him) "inferior" network.

  3. Simon says:

    I like the clip. :)

  4. @duvi: He's a fan of Apple, if you didn't listen or read the whole diatribe. You take the good with the bad. Personally, he deserves a Pulitzer for the Jim Cramer interview and now this slam on Apple and AT&T.

  5. The_Reptile says:

As usual, Jon Stewart sees the headline but doesn't read the articles and is clearly no lawyer. But since when does accuracy make for good humor? Kind of ironic that Stewart is mocking Apple about stolen property when the format of his whole show was stolen from SNL's Weekend Update segment.

  6. Neurobit says:

    JS is a tool.

  7. Dionte says:

What was it that they say money and power does?

  8. JJ says:

I'm a life-long Apple fanboy but JS is 100% on. That said, when a company (or person) gets that big and powerful, it all changes. Don't expect Apple to be the underdog in the garage forever.

  9. CJ says:

Jon Stewart is a douche. He finally found his nitch with the a generation of Kool-Aid drinkers. I remember Jon, back in his MTV days, asking Eddie Van Halen if he'd ever been to the Netherlands. Sammy Hagar had to point out to "Mr. Einstein" that Eddie was born in the Netherlands.

  10. Björn says:

Some of you guys are blowing this up and are taking this way too seriously. JS is just making fun of how Apple used to be hippy-geeks that rebelled against the Corporations; and now they are the Corporation, especially Steve. That's all. Now try and laugh a little...geez.

  11. Snowstorm says:

Why is a whole paragraph being repeated in the article?

  12. deviladv says:

@Bjorn... thank you! Someone who has a sense of humor! Your fanatical religious devotion to the devices of the second coming of Steve the wonderous has finally drained everyone's sense of humor so that no one may make fun of Apple and his Steveness in any way shape or form? (The preceding was a joke, meant to be taken as over the top... so don't go nuts! :P )

JS is a satirist and comedian. Calling him a douche for making fun of the news and current events simply makes you a douche yourself (that's not a joke). He's doing his job, and his fans like it. Posting the clip here is simply topical for the blog and completely relevant to Apple news. If you don't like it, don't watch it. He's just trying to entertain not make a political statement about Apple.

  13. homie says:

I had not read anywhere else that Apple sent people to the home of the guy who FOUND the iPhone. What were they planning to do? Take back any Macs or iphones or iPods they found? "No Apple products for you!" - Apple Nazi

    Seriously though, that is creapy.

  14. Tweger01 says:

    @bjorn @deviladv

thank you guys for actually getting this, apparently we're the only three here with a sense of humor. I love it when people get so upset over a joke, especially something like this. Of course there are truths to it, and of course it's a satire.

If wolf blitzer reported this, do you think anyone would be laughing? They'd just see a sad old man with a beard.

  15. Tweger01 says:

... I also love how ironic it is that the clip is in flash. Just sayin'

  16. Johnsen says:

too bad he didn't mention Flash...really cool guy and i do not come from the US or even know him, but he's right.

    Apple is getting EVIL!

  17. Marcus says:

I don't care what anyone says, that clip was funny! It's comedy from a guy who is obviously a fan of Apple. He is taking the good with the bad and rolling with it.

  18. Dennis says:

Whether we think the jokes or the execution of the jokes was funny, the fact is that this bit points to something that is in fact strange and new. The EFF is talking about what it means for the future of copyright protection. None of us knows what prompted the criminal investigation, but JS is able to construct this direct, satiric personification of Apple as the instigator of all of these actions for that very reason.

  19. Jeff says:

I hope his audience, who apparently sees him as a reliable news source, realizes this is satire. Obviously, Apple reported a theft. Anything after that was the responsibility of law enforcement. Apple cannot order raids.

  20. Jim says:

    is this comedy? really?

  21. Wayne says:

Why do people watch him, satire or no? And a Pulitzer??? Whoever said that is a re-tard.

  22. Chatnoir80 says:

Why so people watch him? That's like asking why do people like Apple. They watch b/c they like him and his brand of comedy. To each his own. Don't deride people b/c their taste aren't exactly like yours.

  23. Bob says:

@Snowstorm "Why is a whole paragraph being repeated in the article?"

I'm reading this on my iPhone 3GS and since it can't do flash, it's actually nice I was able to get the gist of the video.

  24. Mike says:

I don't think that many people take Jon stewart as anything reliable. Anyone that actually watches him will note that he says the same, he is not fair and balanced, and has never claimed to be. He is a comidian on a comedy channel... I love what he does and he does it very well. His bit on appholes was spot on, and like usuall made me laugh! And that's what he does.

  25. Michael says:

J.S. is everything no one wants to be.

  26. Brian says:

It was spot on? I am not bothered by his views because I never cared for him but this wasnt spot on. Apple can't order law enforcement to do a raid. So him putting the blame on Apple for that is just erroneous. I do think though that Apple should remember their roots BUT they are a massive company now so things will be/are different.

  27. sting7k says:

Wow with some of these comments it seems as though Apple is almost on the same level of Muhammad and cannot be ridiculed. It's a comedy show people, lighten up; you'll live longer.

  28. Hmmmmm says:

    @Brian

you've obviously never spent any length of tine in a company town (or union town, for that matter) if you believe that large entities do not "strongly suggest" certain courses of action for local authorities.

  29. not the whole truth says:

I suspect most of the anger here is rooted in the red/blue state bias that tends to define who likes or hates Stewart. It really doesn't matter what he says... the reds will hate it/him and the blues will think it's funny.

  30. Luis says:

Ajahm. Apples been always the underdog but they have Aldo been the only company to keep secrets their products that way. Power = arrogance anyways.

  31. Chatnoir80 says:

    @CJ

some would describe Apple fans as "Kool-Aid drinkers"

  32. The MAN says:

Seems like the people that don't enjoy the humor drank a little bit too much of the Apple kool-aid. It was meant to be joke, get over it. BTW, he's dead on about AT&T network. It doesn't work on the westside freeway.

  33. fastlane says:

People who don't understand Jon Stewart are people who don't understand what's going on in the world. End of story.

  34. Bshecko says:

Sorry I missed this episode. That was funny because it's so true!

  35. Mike M says:

@Fastlane - so true. If you can't pick out the sarcasm then you end up taking things too seriously.

And yes, the Jim Cramer interview deserves some kind of award. There's a torrent out there with the full interview that includes the related content from the weeks before leading up to it. I suggest watching it.

  36. Jeff says:

Completely true and the only people that get upset with that are the apple fanboys who need to get off jobs nuts

  37. Jabberwocky says:

Expected fanboys to rage...and I was not disappointed.

  38. Dylan says:

The Daily Show, available to buy on iTunes! :D

  39. Chatnoir80 says:

    @jabberwocky and @Jeff ditto

  40. Byebyebb says:

Calling jon Stewart mainstream or media is a farce.

  41. Steve Woz says:

Hey is it true I can't watch video here that works fine in sky fire, my pc, and my Mac, on my iPhone, iPad, or ipod touch? Come on TiPb HTML 5 only please... Don't fall into the 90 percentile of the net like everyone else.

  42. Mike M says:

@byebyebb - Jon Stewert would agree with you

@Steve Woz - it's not available anywhere else. Viacom has their videos locked down pretty tight. If one ever shows up on YouTube, it's quickly taken down. Hulu & thedailyshow.com are the only places you'll find it.

  43. OmariJames says:

lmao @ the open space confuse AT&T signal LOL @ iSpruse. i agree with everyone else. hes right.

  44. CJ says:

At FastLane. U are absolutely right!!! I love his show and he always picks on the right ppl or corps.

  45. Sam B. says:

Man, I love Jon Stewart. Once again, he's 100% right.

PS: he regularly uses a MacBook Pro on the show... Just an aside

  46. Mike S. says:

    Awesome!

  47. CJ says:

@fake CJ: Love how people can spoof your name and say all kinds of crazy stuff.

@fastlane: I totally understand Jon Stewart. I understand that I left part of him floating in my toilet bowl early this morning. Yes he is a satirist, but he's also a self-indulged, uninformed, it's all about me, douche. Most Hollywood types are. I couldn't care less if he's trying to sh!t on Apple or not.

  48. smith says:

    @CJ: Clever fail

  49. CJ says:

@smith I'm sure those are the words you hear often when you ask a woman, "So would you like to see my parent's basement?"

  50. dumb apple fan boys says:

We be raginggg; we love them products so much

  51. Mugatu says:

Some of you totally missed the point while bashing JS. He was not defending Gizmo, or saying Apple was wrong for protecting their product. He was saying their reaction was over the edge, sending people to the guys house asking to search? Seriously thats not a company’s right. I also think it was way over for the cops to bash down the door, he is a tech geek just try knocking.

  52. Kyle says:

I love the daily show and the Colbert Report, They can tell it how it is!! and you can learn something too!
