Android tablet shown off running (and crashing) Flash

An Android-based tablet was captured on video running Flash -- or should we say trying to run Flash -- before it crashes:

"Here's a quick and dirty hands-on video review of the Android multi-touch tablet prototype (Android ipad). Yes, it does Adobe flash and air well."

Ironically, you can hear the cameraman boast how he's happy he did not purchase an iPad just as he goes to YouTube and the tablet crashes.

(For the record, after watching this video I am perfectly content with my iPad purchase.)

In fairness, this is beta software on a beta device, and it will no doubt improve as they throw time, money, and hardware at it. Then again, it's 2010 and Apple's had YouTube on the iPhone since 2007, and now have it on the iPad (running cool to the touch with 10 hours of battery life).

Is Adobe proving Steve Jobs right?

Video after the break!

Clamcase will turn your iPad into a netbook
  1. Matt(sZ) says:

"Good thing I didn't get an iPad because this one does flash...OOOP"

I sooooo wish he'd have said "oh wait" instead of "OOOP"

  2. Georgie says:

Although it is a "prototype", the comment about not getting an iPad and the timing of the crash straight after it was gold!!! :)

  3. firesign says:

So it showed a still frame on YouTube, but never actually ran any video without crashing. Yeeeah, real promising. Oop indeed.

  4. Robert says:

Did the browser crash or did it bring down all of Android and was the device rebooting while he was flipping the prototype hardware?

  5. Chris says:

Lmao ironically on my iPad as I clicked play on the video, my browser crashed. Argument dead?

  6. CupertinoSweat says:

this article post couldve just been titled "LOL!"

  7. Danny says:

    Hahahahahahahahahaha EPIC I Love it!!!!!!!

  8. Ericg1840 says:

Just like everyone saying the iPad is a bigger iPhone. This is just a bigger android phone it better do something more than just stock android. Also I love how everyone tries to compare these tablets that aren't even released yet to the iPad which is in the marke by the time all these tablets come out we will be talking about the next iPad.

  9. Smalls says:

"I'm so glad I got my hands on this iPhone OS 4 beta, now for multitasking... Oop"

Seriously, do you expect beta software to run flawlessy. I'm interested in this and I want to see Adobe actually get Flash 10.1 on Android. I don't like Flash particulary, as it is as buggy on my PC (Really, it crashes on a triple core processor), but if Adobe spends enought time with Flash on the Android OS we can actually see a nice addition to mobile Flash use.

HTML5 > Flash, just to keep those of you thinking I like Flash over HTML on the right track.

  10. joe says:

@Smalls ... YES I do expect the software to run flawlessly by now because Adobe is THREE YEARS late delivering it and they keep saying it is going to launch in the next few months. I mean seriously launching a mobile flash three years late and the thing can't even play a YouTube video without crashing... that has nothing to do with being a beta just piss-poor technology

  11. Steve Woz says:

Safari crashes on my iPad and it doesn't even have flash.... It is worse on the iPhone though. So what gives? Apple doesn't even need flash for it's browser to crash? Good stuff.

  12. Freiteez says:

That's like a review I saw showing the Droid Incredible. "it does flash" the audio and video were all laggy and took awhile to switch pages. Yeah, flash is something I want :p

  13. Noodles says:

That's why they call it a "prototype", why not show an actual video demoing flash. Head over to youtube and put this: "/watch?v=ttn1G0Kw62o&feature=related" after .com. Minus the quotes of course.

  14. Winston says:

I agree with Woz, safari crashes all the time on my iPhone.

The video is funny, I don't think it proves much (that we didn't already know) though. Can't wait to see where the and iPhone OS and Android platforms are in a couple years. Someone needs to develop a platform that is less closed than Apple (to ensure quality) but more closed than Android (to ensure compatibility/uniformity) and I'll be hooked.

  15. Carmen C. says:

Stop being sheep, just because Steve Jobs says something doesn't mean its the end all.

  16. Steve Woz says:

@Winston WebOS? Aanyway I agree that this is a prototype so it doesn't prove much. Not only that, but it is running android 1.6. Iwould love to see flash 10.1 on a ready for release android tablet running android 2.1 or 2.2. Then we as apple fanbois can actually judge.

  17. HCWHunter says:

That's funny. I've had an iPhone 3G and now use a 3Gs and Safari has never crashed. Never. I am on the internet all the time. The video IS funny though. I don't miss flash on my iPhone one bit. Youtube works great along with tv.com, SI.com, etc.

  18. Brian says:

@Carmen...maybe we arent being sheep as you call us. Maybe we just appreciate how Apple puts out nice products and may not always be ahead of the game but does things much nicer. Apple doesnt need to rush things out to sell stuff. They take their time and perfect things and then sell them and people actually want them and are loyal to them. The iPad is the first of its kind and by the time the "amazing" pathetic android tablet comes out im sure iPad 2G will be coming out and no one will want a "10 inch android phone that doesnt make calls".

  19. Macboy15 says:

Safari crashes on the iPhone and ipad????? Wow I have had every iPhone to date. And the ipad since April 3 and not once has safari crashed on me! As far as this video prototype or no if it's flash 10 according to adobe there software should work great. When they finally put it on device's we will see more flash crash videos.

  20. Glenn says:

I have an iPod Touch 2G, and Safari has only closed on me a few times, but I was able to go back to the page without problems. In the video, it looked like it was slow to load up videos, and when he clicked one, he may have clicked twice, or too quick before it fully downloaded. In the background you can hear a lot of audio about flash like it is some new and great thing. It has it's place, but the future will only tell.

  21. Gregz0r says:

Sure it's a prototype, but Android is far from a prototype OS. It's mature and stable now, so there really is no excuse, for Flash failing in 2010.

  22. Glenn says:

Checked the video again, and it looked like a video was playing when he clicked on another to play. It was not a happy unit after that. Went to home sceen, then started to reboot. Well he did say it's a prototype. Funny.

  23. @Macboy15 Yes. Safari and a myriad of other apps/games crash on my iPhone 3G regularly. It is a part of software...junk crashes (whether it is eye candy or not). Do you not remember the iPhone apps crashing terribly and Apple blamed developers then said "Oops...our fault...we fixed it." It happens.

You can also expect Flash to crash a mobile browser just as you can a mobile browser to crash with HTML 5 or 4 or whatever. It happens.

Video did have some priceless timing though. :-)

  24. Hang says:

Yes there are numerous times the apps crashed on iPhone, but I never ever have had a problem of safari crashing on my iPhone. N most of all Im on my iPhone all the time. I use my iPhone to browse more than 75 % of the time n go to my MacBook unless I have some flash contents tk watch. So it's quite ridiculous to hear them say safari crashes???? But yes it has happened numerous times on my MacBook, because of flash.

  25. beetFreeQ says:

It's always funny to see how different something is seen on Android blogs and iPhone blogs. While all Android blogs show the vids of that tablet with well running flash and adobe air applications, the iPhone blogs giggle about one video with a crashing browser because of flash...

We'll see how the casual crowd with their facebook games will decide which tablet to buy. For us tech savvy guys it's simple: all the Apple fanboys buy everything Jobs has to offer while the rest decides on features. I'd never buy an iPad as long as it won't allow me to plug in external devices and do real multi tasking. Without that it's just an overpriced toy.

  26. Hang says:

So if u ain't no iPhone/ipad user why wld u bother to come here?? There r plenty of gadget blogs/sites like engadegt, gizmodo, cnet.

  27. ParishYoung says:

Did this guy even play the video back to himself BEFORE posting it online?

  28. Gregg says:

I love it when people put their foot in their mouth. Serves him right. Dum ass. That thing is like 3 ipads thick. Doesn't compete with the iPad. Form factor is a total fail

  29. Rudy says:

Competition = innovation. Welcome android table :) , and some of you are so funny. Always ready to defend apples honer. I for one am getting sick of this flash issue. About 70 percent of website I visit tell me apple has blocked flash on my ipad. That not all true bad apple isn't no saint. Then again it's apples device and they want complete control over their product, sometimes slowing the process of innovation. We can thank Jailbreak/cydia/ rock for their ideas because now the os is taking more abilities that we can do now only the OS 4.0 promises better. All if I know apple they will deliver. So welcome android, you may not be perfect but I believe in you too.

  30. charles says:

@Hang, Just because he does not have an apple product does not mean he can not visit this site. I visit Tibp every day and numerous times a day and I no longer use my iPhone any more. I know longer carry any Apple prodcuts either. I visit this site to get information from Tibp and from its users. Some people are notr closed minded when it comes to learning about tech they currently do not operate, it just makes us people more informed with what is out there.

  31. TK says:

@Hang Well then by your logic, why is a site about the iPhone/iPad and it's users, showing an Android device when it should be on another site? And those of us you aren't, like myself, come here to watch you Apple fanboys happily dance like monkeys as Steve Jobs plays the organ grinder and peddles his wares at unreasonably high prices.

I find it amusing how some of you are laughing at how Flash crashed. It's a protoype and it's an early software build, of course it's going to be buggy and crash. Do you think the iPhone/iPad prototypes worked perfectly? Of course they didn't, they were buggy and didn't work properly, no magical fairy came in, waved it's wand and a perfectly working iPhone appeared in Steve Jobs hand.

And has it ever occured to anyone that the guy just hit the Home button on the tablet by accident? When something crashes on an Android device a prompt appears up saying that the application must Force Close. That didn't happen, so it's either because it's a prototype and an early software build or it because the guy accidentally hit the Home button.

  32. WGary says:

I love the form factor. Trying to think what kind of case I might want to buy with that.

  33. John says:

How are the farmville types going to play flash farmville when it requires clicking-and-dragging?

  34. Hassan says:

The guy says it did not crash but he accidentally hit a button that takes you back to the home screen. and that he will soon post a video to prove it.

  35. USMC says:

If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch Google!!!!

  36. iDavey says:

First...I really tire of people with their "oh, it never happened to me so the person must be lying!" idiocy. Your experience is not the end all experience. Every product has flaws, yours is not perfect (whether iPhone, Android, etc), it never will be.

Second, @usmc, last I checked, Google didn't make Flash...Adobe did. Just saying. And before you say "they're supporting it...blah blah blah" Google is also backing HTML 5 tremendously. They're in a win-win situation no matter which tech comes ahead.

As for this video...pure comedy with the timing, lol. I really don't care which format takes over...I just wish one would hurry so I can get easy watching on my Nexus. Dang.

  37. OmariJames says:

LOL. Good thing you didn't get a what now ?

  38. iDavey says:

Actually, Hassan is right, it does seem to be an accidental button press, and not a crash. Take a look at this video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW9aP4dukIM&feature=youtube_gdata

The home button is indeed on the side if the prototype and can be easily pressed. After watching this, that, and two other videos it does seem highly unlikely that it was a crash...maybe you should fix this story Jeremy. I know we're supposed to hate Adobe and all that jazz...but this doesn't seem like an "Adobe failed" story for the masses.

Sidenote: it was still funny with the timing, lmao.

  39. iDavey says:

Also @wgary, you do understand the definition of "prototype" don't you? They clearly state this is just to show the ability of Android, Flash, and Tegra 2. The design is of no matter.

No company ever spends loads of money to make a real product just to show a demo unless they've already had it made...that's stupid and a waste of money.

  40. Jack says:

how was that a crash? the guy pressed a button to homescreen.

besides, like the iPhone never crashed on me???? lol u name it, Safari, YouTube, etc...

  41. Steve Jobs says:

I love all of the people who don't actually own iPads or iPhones are talking about Safari crashing. Nice try, guys.

    sent from my iPad, Steve

  42. zeagus says:

"And has it ever occured to anyone that the guy just hit the Home button on the tablet by accident?"

Certainly no one with eyeballs who would've seen him press it while watching the vid ;) .

  43. Shrike says:

Uh, that's not a tablet nor a prototype tablet. It's a PCB and LCD encased in a plastic box. It looks like all they did was take their test PCB and LCD and wrap an acrylic box around it.

Considering the netbook-like ports on the thing, it looks it is running an Atom architecture. It looks like it has a serial port! Anyone confirm it's an ARM machine?

If this is the current state-of-the-art for Android w/Flash, they are at least 6 months out (and I'm being generous). Adobe better be further along then this.

  44. fassy says:

Jeez, people, get a grip. Safari crashes sometimes. It is not an assault on your manhood if somebody points out a product you like occasionally has problems.

In the OS 2.x days, it was fairly easy to trigger a crash by loading multiple heavy tabs, and attempting to interact with the pages before they had fully finished loading. That particular trigger no longer works, and the frequency of crashes is much less now than in the 2.x days, but Safari still crashes from time to time -- for me, more often than any other application, but that may be simply because I use Safari more often than any other application.

But yes, the timing of this video was up there with Gates' famous 1998 BSoD showing off beta software at Comdex.

  45. Gino from the Bronx says:

Listen, flash or no flash, my ipad has exceeded my expectations. I can't believe I actually once thought about not purchasing one of these things.

  46. Noodles says:

Some of you are really thick, obviously the Android tablet will not be that "thick". They are only demoing Android with that device. Also, the demo unit is running Android 1.6, not the latest Android OS.

  47. Bob says:

Geez all you iPad fanboys got your panties in a bunch (should probably remove the pad). It's a friggin prototype. Its still in a lexan case for crying out loud. When will you realize that competition is good for us iOwners. I can't wait to see the finished product.

  48. Bob says:

@Steve Jobs - yes I do own an iPhone 3GS and safari does crash, as does safari on my MacBook Pro. Stuff crashes. it's a way of life. It's part of cross platform development as certain things that work flawlessly on one thing don't on another. Oh that's right, you don't allow cross-platform development. Well actually non-Apple cross platform development at least.

  49. Peter says:

Hey, it actually didn't crash. The guy who posted the video updated his post to say very clearly that he just hit the Home button by accident.

Can we dispense with the speculative, jumping-to-conclusions headline please?

  50. Men Moncler says:

I completely concur with kraft foods logo. It??s really undesirable. But totally desagree with nickelodeon logo. The very first a person was significantly better.
