CNBC talks to AT&T CEO regarding iPad adoption and network quality improvements

Today AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson spoke with CNBC in a lengthy interview. Discussed first was the relationship AT&T has with Apple and how the iPad is doing in the business sector.

"I think this is going to be really a significant product for enterprise. You think about, you know, our objective is just to mobilize everything. Whether it's in the home or the workplace, this is a device that really lets you think differently about mobilizing all of the applications that you see in business. And we're getting a strong interest from our large business customers on bringing this device into their environments, and whether it's working with the salesforce, whether it's order takers, any number of areas, are really excited about bringing this device in."

Skipping near the end of the interview Stephenson touches on AT&T's network improvements - mainly in New York.

"The uptake and the demand was dramatic, and there are particular markets like New York. The demand was really impressive, and it had an effect on voice quality. We have been going hard at the voice quality issue in New York, and made tremendous progress. And so, we're getting to a point where voice quality is getting to where it should be, and mobile broadband is the fastest in the nation. as measured by any number of independent people."

So how about it New Yorkers, has the quality of your service increased or are you still stuck with dropped call after dropped call? Sound off in the comments below!

It's too bad nobody brought up the question about the iPhone 4 launch issues that are still continuing as of right now. To be fair to AT&T though, Sprints whole system was shut down from the EVO launch for a few hours. How many EVO's were sold on launch? Now compare that to the amount of iPhone 4 pre-orders were happening today (presumably a much higher number).

Apple needs to get on more than one network in the US.

  1. David says:

I live in NYC and haven't seen a dramatic improvement. The issues I primarily have are with stability. The signal strength fluctuates while stationary...dramatically. Full, to two, to 4, to EDGE, etc. At other times I'll have full bars and yet no data. I won't even be able to load or send an email. Of course, it always happens at the most inopportune times. I'm worried about renewing my contract for another 2 years even though I'm excited about the iPhone 4.

  2. Taylor says:

@David. The same seems to be happening to me. As I am typing this on my iPhone while sitting in the same chair in my home (not in NYC, but in North Texas) my signal has gone from 2 bars of 3G or searching for signal to 1 bar of EDGE to the 4 bars of 3G I have now.

Literally the SAME things are happening to me (not able to load pages and what not)

  3. Jeremy says:

And on Florida's East coast?? Same thing.. There is room for MASSIVE improvement. The service has gotten worse since June last year. I hope it gets better soon. Very soon.

  4. OmariJames says:

I live in suburban NY but spend 90% of my time within city limits. Dropped calls still occur in many areas in NYC. In Manhattan I still get dropped calls while walking or driving. I get dropped calls all over the place. I get dropped data persistently in certain areas as well.

The only thing I can credit what the CEO / Chairman said is that AT&T does in fact have the fastest 3G. I've seen speed increases but it doesn't cover the fact that I still get dropped calls.

As for full bars and no data , that happened to me this past weekend.

  5. Francolasalsa says:

Wow that's why this phone should not be on only one network . I'm in Montreal Canada (city of 4.5 million) and I can tell you that reception and speed of my iPhone on Telus 3.5 G network is great and almost always perfect . Here's hoping you Yanks get your verizon iPhone

  6. Fraydog says:

Verizon should have went UMTS for 3G. However, it's kind of late for that. Here's hoping that LTE deployment greatly accelerates. We need it!

  7. Gag says:

Is 700 MHz going to be a standardized GSM Band? Will Verizon's LTE phones actually work around the world? I wouldn't expect iPhone to go to Verizon unless those things happen.

I had to drive from Wilminton DE thru central Phila .. north along the PA Turnpike about 100mi north of Phila ... the iPad and Maps was useless. I would venture that I only had a signal 50-60% of the time. I had hoped it would replace old magazines for my wife but ended up really needing it because the Navigon GPS we had went crazy. Made my - "What do we need this for?! - wife 'real' happy. Jim
