And, of course, here come the CDMA iPhone 4 on Verizon rumors
Digitimes is once again baiting links with CDMA (read Verizon) rumors, this time hot on the heels of the all new iPhone 4:
Pegatron [Technology] will also start shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 to Apple in the fourth quarter and is currently using its plants in Shanghai, China to produce the products, the sources noted. The company is also working on gaining orders for MacBooks and iPads from Apple, added the sources.
This comes just in advance of June 24 Taiwan Stock Exchange listing, so forgive me if I take it with a huge grain of salt.
Again, there's certainly a CMDA iPhone 4 in the Cupertino labs, but AT&T exclusivity has to run out and Verizon has to give up control to Apple and make the deal -- which means it could happen at any time, or in a long time. And again, we expect it -- and will believe it -- only when Apple announces it. Same goes for iPhone 4 on Sprint, or Chinese CDMA.
Have to ask the question, though -- if a Verizon iPhone 4 does land in 2010, who'll be less happy, people with poor service who just re-upped with AT&T or people who gave up on iPhone and just bought Droid 2/Droid X?
We now return you to your regularly scheduled GSM/UTMS day...

I hope it never happens!
Why do these sites waste so much time talking about rumors. They should be talking about facts, what's real!
I guess I'm lucky, but here in Orlando, FL we have fantastic AT&T coverage. I hardly ever have issues. So I certainly don't have any interest in giving up my internationally compatible, talk on the phone and use the internet at the same time GSM iPhone.
Droid Life posted something similar to this yesterday...
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/06/16/t-mobile-axed-from-apple-deal-verizon-comes-up-with-cash/
it's funny how they never stop with these rumors hahaha get ready for another year of this fellas.
I'd love to see the iPhone go to other carriers. I have no problems with AT&T service where I live other than the ocassional dropped call. I figure when this happens one day everyone can go flood the new carrier and lighten up the load off AT&T. Works for me. I'll stay. All the complainers can go to whatever apple chooses next.
Man im so tire of hearing about this fairy-tale iphone for verizon that never really seems to never come out. Im a verizon customer about to switch to att for two reasons. One is obvious , iphone 4, two att has better reception where i live an work than verizin does. Plain an simple forget about the rumors an post it when when apple an verizon both anounce he deal being done. But thats my two cents
Even if they go to verizon ... As much as I hate dropping calls ( and that might end with the improve antenna on the iPhone 4 ) I absolutly hate verizon as a company in a whole ... I mean customer service was the worse ever , and on top of that if people think AT&T is expensive to keep an iPhone u have no idea what that b on verizon ... They r really good at one thing and that's is finding charges to put in ur bill... Remember the iPhone is as good as ur data plan , And on verizon that my friends is really reAlly really expensive to have ...
Tired of the Verizon crap, I left Verizon for ATT and haven't been happier. AT&T has the fastest 3G network right now (national tests prove that) and the new antenna working on the IP4 will help the call drop problem in the bigger cities. Also, tell me what Euopean country you can use your CDMA phone in?
Personally, I don't think we'll see a VeriPhone this side of LTE. Apple doesn't want to make 2 phones. It will ultimately confuse the average consumer and costs a lot of money. Who knows though.
Never though I would have to listen to AT&T fan boys. What everyone fails to talk about is that competition is good! If the phone is on any other carrier it is a positive as it will force both to make there networks better and for you AT&T loyalists. If someone switches to Verizon it only benefits you as your bandwidth gets better because the usage is spread around.
The iphone is offered on multiple carriers throughout the world. Did you read you can buy one unlocked internationally.
Agreed though I am sick of the rumors. Start reporting news and facts rather than rampant speculation.
If it turns out to be true, I say let the AT&T complainers leave and free up bandwidth for those who wish to stay. Eventually whichever network Apple choses to let carry their phone will become just as crowded as AT&Ts and suffer the same problems. I'm looking forward to the eventually crumbling of Sprint/T-Mobile/Verizon Wireless.
Could be why AT&T is letting some people upgrade early - to limit defectors to Verizon.
I'm a skeptic. What would be the point of producing a CDMA iPhone when Verizon will be rolling out its LTE network later this year? I just don't see the iPhone on Verizon until at least 2011 and it will be an LTE model.
It will happen, but for GSM T-Mobile first.
@Billiam ATT has always charged a $18 upgrade fee, you may not have to pay it depending how long a customer you been or if it is a business account
@bryan- i have been with ATT since 2005 and i have to pay it. i never paid that before ever.
I kinda believe it, I thought it was weird that AT&T was just being nice and upgrading everyone's iPhone. I think it's to lock you in for the next two years, then they upped the cancellation fees. The rumors earlier this year that it would come to verizon after the AT&T release. But who knows, it's been a rumor so many time. I'm just trying to add things up. I don't have a problem with AT&T service in my area, but I do think it's weird they are being nice.
Or are people going to be the most upset when they get on the Verizon network and realize the can't use the data feature while they are on a call or the the network sucks as much AT&T due to the new load of iPhone users.
I hope it happens. I won't be leaving AT&T for a while after my iPhone 4 gets in my hand. That will make the iPhone the premier handset in the US. Android will fall to 3 or 4. Also it will shut Verizon fans up as millions of iPhones melt their network.
I switched to AT&T from Verizon because of their crappy customer service and high bills. My husband stayed with Verizon and when he sees his bill every month it's like a gut punch. I know how much mine will be every month. Period.
) Sure, I get a few dropped calls now and then, but I like being able to talk, and surf the web. Even if Verizon got the iphone, I wouldn't switch. PS I have had a BlackBerry all this time, but I'm going iphone on the 24th.......hopefully. ;O)
As far as I'm concerned, t-Mobile (and verizon too) can have the iPhone. Where I live, AT&T has fantastic coverage, and Verizon is a lot harder to deal with. I'll stick with AT&T unless Verizon really wows me with a cool new feature or a plan that costs $50.
AT&T sucks in Philly and NYC. Whenever I got to a Phillies Game or any event in South Philly, I get close to NO signal.
Folks, there were two World Series and one Stanley Cup Finals in Philly in the last three years and I can't use my iPhone to make calls! My pal sitting next to me with a Verizon BB is fine. WTF?
AT&T doesn't like the Phillies!!!
Inhales really big...............exhales! Nevermind, I'm not holding my breath!
Nobody likes the Phillies!
Can't use the phone outside of the country is pretty old and tired. There is an actually small percentage of Americans that actually travel overseas and most of the Americas have CMDA networks which can be used. I love how people keep saying that AT&T would never make a CDMA phone because of cost is pretty weak. Making CDMA phones has yet to hurt RIM or any of other cellphone manufacturer. I would switch to any other carrier besides AT&T right now if they offered the iPhone.
Everyone has a carrier they hate. Mine is AT&T. That's the only reason I currently dont have a iPhone. I left 4 years ago and will never go back. IMO AT&T is just a greedy company who does not take care of their customers. If the iPhone were to go to Sprint and/or Verizon, they would dominate the market. The only reason Android even exist is because of the iPhone and AT&T partnership. If Apple was smart, they renegotiated their deal with AT&T when the iPad came out. Freeing up there cell phones for different cariers.
I just pre-ordered a new iPhone, and I would love to see a Verizon iPhone. At that point AT&T will be fighting for their bare survival to finally improve their network.
Watch them quit spending on stupid commercials and instead put up more cell towers. As long as there is no Verizon iPhone, AT&T can keep slacking off.
Happy AT&T iPhone guy here and all this Verizon talk really seems hollow to me. remember, Steve Jobs knows how to hold a grudge. by all accounts he gave Verizon the chance with the original and Verizon was a no go. if anything, I'd say Verizon is going to be one of the last carriers to get it with all the smack they've talked. remember those commercials parodying the big red gum commercials? yeah they're clearly showing an Iphone for ATT. Competition is good but Steve Jobs is calling the shots on this one and you don't make fun of his baby and expect to be treated fairly.
Wouldn't want a CDMA iPhone anyway. I do travel outside of the US, and CDMA won't work in most any other country. So, like my MiFi, the phone would stop working at the border. Doesn't help me.
I could maybe see it going to sprint do to 4g but I see it happening next year.
Competition is good, but it will not mean very much if the phone is a different model. If it was a hardware change in all iPhones that supported T-Mobile US's AWS 3G then you could just get an unlocked phone and drop in whichever SIM you like. Swapping between AT&T and Verizon would mean you would have to buy a new iPhone again, which will act as a lock in to many people unless the new model supports both CDMA and GSM networks.
In any case this rumor has been around since the iPhone first came out and every time it has been wrong so I'm not holding my breath.
@Loner. Are you saying you can't use GSM outside America, and you can CDMA? That is completely backwards! GSM is more of a world standard. I hope I just read your post wrong!
All this BS talk of AT&T's poor network is getting on everyones nerves. They have the fastest 3G, they have the coverage, they have more towers, they have the iPhone, they have the data and call at the same time, they have the global reception.. I mean you pretty much shoot yourself in the foot by being on Verizon. Its far too limiting. There is no way in hell Apple will go to Verizon until they make their network as capable as AT&T's. Final Answer.
@Warlord: AT&T's coverage sucks in my area, but I still would rather have the iPhone and put up with dropped calls/crappy 3G coverage.
"Pegatron [Technology] will also start shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 to Apple" Who ships to whom?
You know, this rumor keeps coming up so much that I'm convinced there's someone making money off the attempts to pump up the stocks...
The Iphone 3G (or possibly it was 3gs) was released in the 4th quarter in China if i'm correct. i'd love this to mean we will see a cdma iphone on sprint so i can dump my pre. That said, this could mirror prior releases and just be a prelude to a chinese release. China does have cdma carriers as do pakistan, india, japan and south korea. Not to mention it's being made in china. not that a lot of stuff isn't. But it could just be for china. But please please please bring it to sprint. Cause i'm sick of my Pre. Yeah i said it!
Thank you for cheering up people who have switched from Verizon to AT&T earlier this year like myself just because we couldn't wait for another year. Now AT&T loyals will get iPhone 4 and we switchers get stuck with 3GS for at least another year! Well, a hope for better iPhone 4 next June or the time to go back to Verizon might come! LOL
SERIOUSLY can we please STOP these incessantly stupid rumor articles about VZW getting the iPhone!!!!! If it happens and thats a big IF it will be sometime after 2012 because we know of the AT&T exclusivity ending sometime in 2012!! Plus all the other factors that have come out it's more likely t-Mobile will get n iPhone in 2012 before Verizon!
i have droid now and i am jumping to iphone4. i used to have at-t back when they were cingular and i am going to try them again.
@Billium, the $18.00 up grade fee is standard for all upgrades at AT&T. I've been with AT&T since the 90s and paid the upgrade fee every time I up grade any of my three lines. As a side note I have been told AT&T will wave that fee this time I'll wait and see. Check your past bills I suspect you'll find that you have been paying it too.
The one time I got through to the order part of the site for the iPhone preorder, it listed the upgrade fee in a strikeout font (as if it was waived).
Wow, here we go again. These rumors really got to stop. After holding out 3 years and staying with Verizon I finally made the ultimate decision to give-in to AT&T. I was hopeful that a VeriPhone would be coming or at least news from Mr. Jobs. or Verizon but after no news at the WWDC 2010 I stopped believing in a iPhone for BIG RED. I'm not at all surprised the rumors begin just days after the pre-orders for the iPhone 4. I doubt it's true, only to anger the Verizon customers, like me, who are now stuck with AT&T for the next two years. But IF the 2012 exclusivity is true then my contract should end when the iPhone goes to multiple carriers. Enough is enough. I got tired of waiting and bought the phone I wanted from the start. Personally, I am happy I waited this long because now I have all these great features and didn't have to go through 3 versions to get them. Exclusivity is the worst and I hope someday it'll be about customer choice of phone and carrier. My girlfriend wants and iPhone too but doesn't want to go to AT&T because she had them before and it's horrible. However, I doubt she'll hold out much longer if nothing comes by the end of this year.
AT&T is nothing without the iPhone. Once the iPhone goes to another network, hopefully Verizon, it's game over for AT&T making a profit. Let's give out customers personal info and credit card numbers! Yay AT&T!
http://gizmodo.com/5564913/proof-iphone-4-pre+orders-using-other-peoples-credit-cards-shipping-info
It's not going to happen for a while. Chances are verizon starts them every time or someone like that because that keeps people from switching for a few months and they do that because the release is coming soon. At least this person has big dreams. I mean if you heard that your competitor just sold 600,000 iphones, I’d be freaking a little bit too. ATT would allow Tmobile to get it because no offense to Tmobile but their coverage isn’t that great. Plus they are GSM and obviously apple doesn’t want to deviate away from the voice and data at the same time. Tmobile users already use the iphone and apple and att know that so why not make it official? If you took all the iphones active on ATT’s network and put them on Verizon, they would fall apart. ATT is better at the data network and by capping data, it helps improve their network. Verizon would do the same too. They stopped taking digs at the iphone because the iphone has some of the features now like multitasking which is what people took digs at. Their last hope is to pick on AT&T. If Verizon was getting an iphone, you would not see the Droid X conference with the Verizon Motorola and google logo together plus they wouldn't waste their time taking digs. The digs are bitterness. Chances are all three plus htc has contracted with Verizon and that is why Verizon puts out so man y htc phones. Also, if they were getting an iphone, why would the conference be on June 23rd?
I hate how people think it will make Apple much more money just to release it over Verizon's 90 million customers. Okay, people. Be realistic now & put your Steve Jobs cap on! Don't just expect 90 million customers are waiting/switching over to the iPhone if it "were" ever released on the Verizon network. If you actually think about, probably only 20%-40% of Verizon customer/iPhone waiters + 8%-10% of AT&T customers/haters would probably switch over to an iPhone. So in all reality, it's not a large number-->a waste of time for Apple.
I would be suprised if this happened. I do not see verizon giving in to apple control like AT&T. Remember when iPhone first came out, no one liked apple's deal except AT&T. I would like to see iPhone on other carriers.
@Glenn so you're saying that 20-40% of Verizon's 90 million customers would purchase the iphone. This is 18 to 36 million more phones sold. I'm sorry thats a big deal. You just made a great argument for Apple to release the iphone to more carriers.
WELL!!! Ahem, TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, the statistical facts are that the market research has proven all studies quoted in blogs to be 100% grounded in facts and never commisioned or otherwise skewed by marketing machines or their fruity religions business partners. Had enough BS? Look at the writing on the wall. The growth rate of Apple's web traffic has slowed. Android's has gained. Samsung has just announced a serious Andriod conpetitor on ATnT FINALLY. HPalm's announcement of new devices within the year is, furthermore, not insignificant. 2 plus 2 equals: Apple needs more markets soon to squeeze the last bit of share from a quickly saturating market. Whay would Steve Jobs do? Same thing anyone else would. Try to make even more money.
OH and to highlight my point read Rene's latest on AT&Ts latest policy. They will charge their customers against use of the Microcell WHEN IT'S USING YOUR BROADBAND CONNECTION THAT YOU PAY FOR. Ludicrous! The fruit company seems a little strange at times but they deliver one of the best OSes. They do not however levy a stupidity tax against their customers the way AT&T does. It's almost as though AT&T want to drive Apple to another carrier
I am planning on renewing my AT&T contract just to be able to upgrade to the new iphone. Yes i would be seriously pissed off if Verizon comes up with the iphone as well. I could amd would jump ship in a flash. Iphone is the only...and i mean ONLY thing chaining me to at&T.
With the new Android phones coming to AT&T, it's easy to assume that these rumors are true. AT&T is good in my area, I'd like if everyone got iPhone because then all the features like facetime would actually be useful. We'd be able to send eachother videos we made with iMovie, show someone the same image quality in a picture, and it would just become a standard.
It just seems with 2 or 3 really good Android phones coming to AT&T when they had none beside a limited Backflip, they've given up to the band wagon which I'm sure is part of the deal they originally had. Once they don't have the iPhone exclusively, they'll need the power of other smartphones to keep customers.
@Joe, no. Not really. I would probably say no more than 18 million customers. That's really not a lot. These are also people that may be interested. Not fully, yet.
I love ATT. No problems where I live. Other carriers with iPhones would probably help ATT run a little better. But, verizon will get it. And so will tmobile. My crystal ball says in a few months. wink
Hi, i bought one Apple Iphone 4 16GB White from http://www.trade-whole.com/new-limitedquantity-apple-iphone-4-white-16gb-unlocked-mc603ba-gsm-cellular-phone-12pcs-instore-with-full-cash-payment-p-420.html in competitive price last week ,it is very wonderful, i like it very much.
