iOS 4 Jailbreak
is there a Jailbreak for iOS 4?

iOS 4 Jailbreak is another question that just won't stop flooding our mailboxes today. Previous versions of iOS 4 beta up to and including the GM have gotten various states of Jailbreak thanks to the efforts of the iPhone Dev Team. Will the final release version work with current Jailbreaks? Will it work on iPhone 4 hardware?
UPDATE 1: The Dev Team has posted that they're working on it but it will take some time (obviously).
We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.
Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.
If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.
UPDATE 2: And so it begins:
redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G). [Download link]
As always, if you're not sure what any of this means, or what Jailbreaking is, then move along. Nothing to see here. If you need help or want to discuss further, head on over to the TiPb iPhone Jailbreak Forum -- that's where all our ninja hang.
And when/if a full on iOS 4 (release version) Jailbreak hits, we -- probably Ally -- will be back to tell you all about it.
That is, if you're planning on Jailbreaking iOS 4?

No need after Multitasking.
I wouldn't be able to live without my iTypeFastr keyboard.
@Azooz There is a need for 3g iPhone/2G iPod users that want these features.
Hmm it is SOO needed Azooz. Quick Reply and MyWi are two very GOOD reasons to do it. Besides that you are close to being right.
I need MyWi. Needs a JB ASAP!
No need for JB now after getting almost all wishes
I'm looking to JB iOS4 for multi-tasking & wallpapers, I know my 3G will sell easier with these if up to par with other models, obviously lacking a solid video recorder & editing app
You guys are such teasers.
Always with your important titles but no serious info, lurking people to click on the links.
I wish these and other sites would stop promoting Jailbreaking. This is cost us devs money. You can SAY that you aren't promoting it, but every time you post an article about it, you enlighten someone new to the concept or the posters build up how great it is. If it were just used for unlocking or features, that would be one thing, but JB biggest draw is the piracy of apps. Stealing is stealing. Stealing a .99 cent app is still theft.
Also, I believe that JB community is responsible for the termination of the unlimited data plans since the JB allow the unauthorized and abuse of tethering. So keep stealing those apps if it's worth your conscience and self respect and keep abusing the tethering until we are paying for data by the byte like they do in the UK.
MyWi is a must have if you don't have tiered data and a wifi only iPad.
I will be jailbreaking because I'm on an iPhone 3G... and it lacks multitasking and backgrounds.
@EvilHomer: What are you talking about? JailBreaking does not instantly lead to pirating crappy applications. In fact, the Cydia store has paid apps that you can buy. It is just an alternative to those who want MORE out of their iPhone. Please read up before you make sensationalist comments like #9.
I think jailbreaking an iPhone with iOS4 is like trying to mod an already perfectly built Ferrari. Sure the manufacurer builds an amazing car, but there's always something extra you can do to enhance the experience. I agree with Distort it, MyWi and QuickReply are key!!
I need SBsettings (should be in the App Switcher bar) for my WiFi and Phone toggles. I like CallMe and think apple should include this functionality. Then BiteSMS is a must-have for me and of course its delivery reports. Finally I think it's abnormal you can't customise your sms ringtones. So yeah, the JB is still on for me!
I dream of a day that I don't need to jailbreak BECAUSE apple stops being so controling and not giving us simple stuff like wallpaper!!! Apple did this to themselves abd the dev's. Don't blame the users. Were just trying to get the most out of our stuff. Jailbreaking promotes advancement in technology. Apple pushes other manufacturers to make better devices who is pushing apple to make a better device? The users!
@Frank: You would not call it sensationalism if you were a dev and loosing money to the apps and resources that Cydia facilitates. And pirating a crappy application is no different than stealing a good one. That's what thieves tell themselves to justify stealing. And I really don't think anyone bothers to steal the "crappy" apps. They target the higher priced ones that are stolen.
I am not saying that everyone that JB's an iPhone steals apps, but it's the ONLY gateway in which it is done. But hey, whatever lets you sleep at night...
For those saying whats the point of jailbreaking anymore I have a question for you. Have you ever even jailbroken your device? I'm guessing not if you are honestly spewing out this nonsense.
@ Frank- I agree with u 100%.
@Evilhomer- seriously? I think that you should thank the dev team and other like them who help showoff the real capabilities of the iPhone. Widgets on the lock screen, mywi, video ringtones, catergories, quick reply mms, winterboard, font changers, etc ..... The list just goes on and on.
Regarding Dan's comment, you can sure tell the kids are out of school for summer and have nothing better to do...
@ Carolinamic: Easily said from someone who does not make their living developing software. Thankful to the DEV team?
You forgot to add piracy to your list of the wonderful things the DEV team has brought to the iPhone..
Again, if you don't make your living writing software, you can't really make a valid argument to me.
@ evilhomer - I don't have to be a dev making a living off developing to feel the effects off someone stealing from me. A couple of months ago some one stole my 500 stero out my car. I bout an alarm after that. Not saying that it will some from breaking in my car again but it's an deterant. I also know that its technology that exist that can shut down priated apps once thier detected.
@Evil Homer get a grip. Jailbreak does not promote pirating apps. A lot of people found in jailbreak communities are developers as well.. Not many support something like stealing apps.
I personally wish they would remove any pirating apps stuff also. I buy all my apps as I'm sure many others do.
As for your teathering remark...you're on your own there. I pay $30 a month for unlimited data. I should be able to do whatever I want with my unlimited plan.
You want to refer to other countries? Other countries get to teather for free like it was designed.
@EvilHomer - Your entire argument is based on the assumption that jailbreakers will make use of tools to pirate applications. My phone has been jailbroken since the first day I had it. I've never installed a pirate app. In fact, as has been pointed out above, I've spent a fair amount of cash on paid Cydia/Rock apps to improve the device's functionality. Lockinfo, MyWi, iFile, Categories, inspell and Quickreply for SMS are all paid, and are all awesome. Keep your over naive generalizations to yourself.
@EvilHomer: Maybe if you are losing money you should develop a better application -- maybe with some pirating protection? I admit that I have pirated applications in the past but I buy the good ones and delete the crappy ones.
I have never stole a app being jailbroke, that the most horse crap I have heard. I'm sure there are a few that do but most use it for the legit Apps developers make on cydia. Jailbreak isn't for all but it's a very useful tool for people that want more out of their iPhones. The developers on cydia are real people too.
Hey Evil , getting personal are we?
Clearly you have never even jailbroken.
Put it this way. Ill jailbreak just for lockinfo, sbsettings, mywi, and backgrounder.
Carry on little one.
iOS 4 is up!
@EvilHomer I don't pirate apps and I have paid for the data I use via an unlimited tariff already. The fact the thieving networks want us to pay again to tether sucks. JB all the way.
It's going to be hard to live without LockInfo but I'm going to have to if they don't JB the iPhone 4 since it's already on its way.
If Apple doesn't get it together within the next year and get these notifications up to snuff I'll definitely be shopping Android phones next year.
@Dan:
Why is it nonsense that I no longer wish to jailbreak? Everything I used on both my jailbroken iPhones over the past two years are now available in iOS4 (except SBSettings, so I will choose to get around that by just leaving everything on with the improved battery life of iPhone 4).
If you still want to reply to texts within apps, or use 3G Unrestrictor, or tether, or customize themes, or whatever else, then by all means go for it. But, those things are of no use to me, or perhaps others.
Expecting everyone to have the same needs as yourself is what is nonsense.
The reason I didn't upgrade from my 3G was because it is broke. I already have folders, SBSettings is great, wallpapers, custom tone for SMS and email, backgrounds, themes, the list goes on and on. When ios4 is broken, THEN I will consider the new phone. If you ain't broke, you don't know what your missing!! It kind of shoots down Apple's claims of battery life being the reason they don't allow the phone to run free. And that makes no sense. I have a 2 year old 3G that works just fine with the break. Just fine.
@fastlane
well perhaps nonsense was the wrong term. If you are more than happy with ios4 options then thats great.
But for people to say theres no point , thats far from the truth.
@Dan:
Agreed.
Im still waiting for a jailbreak for os4 before i upgrade. There are alot of features that i have off jailbreak so i wont upgrade till there is a jailbreak. I have 3.1.3 i dont need unlock just jailbreak.
Sorry im also jailbroken off spirit.
@Evilhomer- I appreciate your addition to the debate, but respectfully disagree.
My brother got the first iphone. Then he upgraded to the 3g. Without Jailbrake, that first iphone would be sitting in a drawer. But using it, I was able to bring the phone to life and use it on a pay-as-you-go carrier.
And speaking of pay as i go, I've never pirated an ap - at $0.99 why would I bother? I've paid for many tho, and if I hadn't jailbroken this iphone, I devs would not have that money. Thanks!
I just upgraded and I wish I hadn't 3G doesn't have custom wallpapers well mine doesn't. LOL Anyway no biggie I'll wait till there's a JB for 4 and get back my wallpaper and custom ringtones.
@evilhomer.
What you are saying about the jailbreak community being a bunch of pirates is the same that most folks are saying about Muslims. Just because a couple crazy extremists blew themselves up to prove a point that makes all Muslims terrorists right? Open your eyes. If it wasn't for these developers who submit their work to Cydia and Icy then Apple wouldn't have realized the potential for improvement on the iPhone platform. Also, Apple did this to themselves by turning those developers away. They had great ideas, some of which Apple has now taken credit for developing for iOS4, so who are the REAL pirates.
Just a quick question... isn't "backgrounding" the same as multitasking?? I mean, I don't see why you need to upgrade if you already have a cracked phone that uses the Backgrounding feature. And I dunno what quickreply if it has to deal with SMS then get BiteSMS. I love how you can reply even if your phone is locked.
Hell yeah I have an iphone 3G and the only good feature on the new firmware is the folders and 5x zoom. no home screen wallpaper no multi-tasking no iBooks. I don't hate apple for it but at least they should've thrown in home screen wallpaper.
Jobs and Co. aren't stupid. They won't admit it in words but they love the developer/hacker community. Even if Apple didn't truly think the iPhone or the users would want greater functionality, developers showed that it was capable of multitasking, tethering, folders, custom wallpaper, etc. and that there was indeed a customer craving for said functionality.
As those of you lament the jailbreakers and those who make it possible, keep in mind that if it weren't for a majority of these people, these features STILL wouldn't be made available by Apple.
So here's a round of applause for all you developers and hackers who advance technology with your pioneering spirit. Thanks for all you do!
@Evil Homer: If you did your research, the dev team didn't bring pirated apps to the iPhone. If you are going to complain, go to where the apps that started it came from. Cracking apps, install0us, and host sites. Don't blame the Dev Team for what you don't know.
Time for a new jailbreak picture TIPB...
I need MeCanto.
For those of us with devices 16 gb and smaller, being able to stream music is a must. As best I can tell, I've yet to find an app store app that works on par with MeCanto.
Also, they just announced today that their service is now free... Win.
I JB my first iPhone when'd they came out 3 years ago , because I like to have custom ringtones, custom videotones, wallpaper. And much more !!! I paid $634 for my phone and I wanted to do more than just phone calls !!! Now I have the 3gs and my data use per month is about 17gigs as per last month !!! So go figure the fun that I have with my JB iPhone !!! I do donwload cracked apps !! And if I liked I buy it like I did with myvtones. Thank you for the Dev team. For doing what they do.
If I buy a ferrari, I want to go as fast as I want, even if apple wants me to go only 50 miles per hour, if you know what I'm saying !!!!!!
@evil homer if you're gonna be a baby about it why don't you crawl back into your crib and suck a fat thumb.
Or hop into the sanbox and POUND SAND. cuz no one cares about the junk apps youre cranking out anyway.
Interesting how the short attention span of the readers took this discussion and dedicated it to ostracizing Evil Homer. It would've been great to read and or share any info about when a 4.0 jailbreak will be available, and from whom.
I can find this info and related discussion on other sites like Engatget and Macrumors, but simply come here because it's been in my bookmarks so long. I'm thinking it's time to update my bookmarks.
Say what you will.. but Jailbreaking is the only way i want my iphone!!!... and 10% of all iphone users feel the same way(which is in the millions)!!!!... so anybody who complains about jailbreaking... well truthly, they are irrelevant to the equation!!!
All I need is the unlock 'cos I'm w t-mobile we still haven't upgraded to AT&T carriers where I live
I need the unlock too.
Developers cam curse JB all they want, but it is really shortsighted, since more than half of us would flee to different platforms like Android if we had to stay locked. Unless you also carry your apps to those platforms, developers would lose a substantial number of customers. Because while we prefer more freedom with our device, we also purchase many apps. So be careful what you wish for Mr. Developer dude.
I'm a strong proponent of intellectual property rights and capitalism, so I would not consider stealing apps or music. That said, I do like jailbreaks since they add a lot of functionality to my iTouch. But iOS4 pretty much adds everything I jailbroke (sp?) for in the first place (folders, playlists, better GUI), so I no longer have any need for it.
There will be those who do not agree but i'll say it anyway.
Assuming you need/want a jailbreak or unlock, Do not buy a new device or upgrade the OS until you know for a fact that there is a jailbreak and unlock.
What happens when the devs and hackers get tired of providing these tools? Don't jump in if you don't know how deep the water is.
You have people who have managed a jailbreak of the new iphone and OS and they have not released. Why? Well at least one has said its because people won't stop asking for release dates and won't stop demanding that it be now. These guys do this for FREE, you have no right to demand anything, so get over the false sense of entitlement and be grateful for what these people have done.
Touche
Until Apple decides to give us the freedom to delete individual call entries without deleting all of them at once, or adds the functionality to change your mail tones and add reminder functions to the current platform, people like myself will continue to jailbreak. Yes Apple did incorporate some of the jailbreak features ie. Backgrounding, wallpapers, multi-tasking we are still missing a lot of great functionality that the iPhone is capable of. Not all of us jailbreak for my wi or to switch carriers, a lot of us do it for better us of the iPhone period!!
I've got an article that "Jailbreak/unlock iPhone 3GS for iOS 4 on Mac" in ifunia iphone column, which is clear that they will install unapproved, third-party applications after Jailbreak it. But i want to know what's mean of "iOS 4 Jailbreak".
i found this on youtube, looks legit to me, might be worth a try
