Potential fix for lost 3G data connections following iOS 4 update?

Losing your AT&T data connection following the iOS 4 update? We got a tip from a TiPb reader who spent some time on the phone with Apple support. If you're having the same problem (typically it's people with unlimited data, like we mentioned yesterday), try using his steps below to get it back. He said he did it with 2 friends that lost data as well and it seems to work -- at least as a temp fix.
- Create a new admin account on your computer or use another computer that has iTunes on it to create a new Administrator ID or one with Admin rights. (This stops iTunes from looking at primary user info inside iTunes as that seems to be the issue)
- Open iTunes 9.2 and plugin your iPhone, click on Restore, it will download the iOS again and load it on your phone.
- Setup as new phone and after it sync's, check Safari for internet access.
- If that works, then login to your normal ID and rename your iPhone and RESYNC all your data.
If you check your Settings and About, you'll see that their is no carrier listed before this and that's why it's happening. It also worked on 2 other stock phones that had the same issue.
People who have previously used Spirit might also find this handy.
[Thanks @audit!]

All I did was restore it as a new phone and that was it. No need to create admin ids or anything..
Alli did was restore from a previous backup. About a month earlier .. That's all an I tool out all te pictures and videos and compiedthem to an album on my computer I only lost some texts for a month and like 3 unimportant contacts
Yeah happened to me I emailed Rene about it. But after upgrading it didn't work. So I restored. It didn't work. And then I restored again. It didn't work and then finally I restored. And the phone stops in the middle of the restore when it asks you if you want to restore as new or from a backup. At that time I swiped to unlock and was able to use 3G. So I knew at that point my backup was corrupted. I hit restore as new. No other account access mumbo jumbo was needed.
I personally Believe that this happens only to people who have been using the jailbreak app MyWi. It tampers with your network settings a lot and somehow that may have carried over to the new software update if you don't select set up at new iphone
I wasn't using MyWi and reset mine back to factory first before I even started the upgrade and no data after the upgrade, tried a restore 3 times and still nothing, after talking to the apple tech, he said he'd been receiving calls all day about the same issue and the above is what was used to fix it.
yep i restored as new phone and it fixed it i believe this is due to the spirit jailbreak but i could be wrong. could you take a poll and find out how many people had this problem with and without jailbreak before. it makes sense that it may have left over carrier tweaks that when you straight upgrade it breaks it.
Just install the new carrier settings if you're not jailbroken. Turn off your phone. Turn it on again. FIXED!!
If you are jailbroken, you'll have to do a full restore, then update the carrier settings.
Nuff said.
Why tibp decides to was hours of peoples times is stupid. Ways to get more web clicks. People just restore your phone as new. Don't waste your time.
I went into Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. Phone rebooted and it worked.
I was previously jailbroken with a custom carrier profile. I believe that may have been my problem.
I agree @Stephen tip is a good one. I was jailbroken to the teeth with MyWi and all and I didn't have any problems but I did the Reset all Setting anyways. Not trying to be an A$s just saying its probably worth trying it first since you keep all your setting and saved data from before like MMS and Phone history.
Had to restore to new phone. Backup didn't work. In the end it was a lot of work but worth it.
If apple would have included instant reply to SMS I would likely never jailbreak again.
also once the phone started to sync my stuff like video I interrupted it to see if my data was working and it was...then I continue the sync.
@Stephen's tip fixed the issue for me. THANKS!!
All these problems are precisely why I'm waiting at least another week before I upgrade to the new iOS. Let everyone report all the bugs and Apple fix them first before I join the masses of frustrated upgraders.
One question I have, though - it seems to me from all I'm reading is that this problem seems to be unique to jailbroken phones. Mine's not jailbroken, so I have hope that I won't have any problems when I do go for the upgrade.
I tried ALL day yesterday to update my phone. In the long run, I ended up restoring it. It said it was updated as well, however, I don't think I got all the data! When it was done with the restore, I had the new "folder" system, but I after I did the backup to put all my info back on it, it was gone. Some stuff is different, but I am missing things. So, I decided to to the reset, then try to re download the new stuff, I'll let you know if it works!
Reset all settings didn't work for me. And the problems carried over to my iPhone 4 when I restored it from the backup of my 3GS.
Hi. Same problems - no 3G / no data, after upgrading to iOS 4.0 my 3GS. Carrier: Vodafone Greece. Tried to restore, no luck either. Then I tried another carrier's (Cosmote) SIM card with my 3GS/iOS 4.0 and 3G data was working fine. So I called VF customer care; they suggested to keep the iphone switched off for at least 5 mins and try again. After I switched the iphone back 10 mins later, 3G was working again on Vodafone network. So far no other 3G issues (last 10 hours)
does anyone else NOT have the MMS option in 4.0 ? I'm using a 3G, jailbroken, but I don't think I remember seeing the option in 'Messages' like I did with 3.1x
For those with Jailbroken phones, expect the loss of your Internet, and MMS options. Although you still can text, and go online using WiFi, your best bet is to reset, and jailbreak after you have resolved the issue with a simple restore (using a a date prior to you jailbreaking to restore with)
@Stephen- thanks! Had been running on edge and I reset the network settings (which rebooted) , turned 3G back on and wha la! I really appreciate trying to address the problem and not just blatantly restoring (which is all that AT&T would recommend- but I knew there jad to be something specific out there).
For the record: restored complete backup on the iPhone 4 with iTunes 9.2, 3GS, jailbreak by blackra1n, had been using purchased MyWi.
Hi Guys, I had exactly the same problem and the fix was very easy after trolling through a lot of forums. I just upgraded my 3GS from 3.3 to 4.0 and lost data from 3G and Edge but Wifi is ok. Visit this site via Wifi on your Iphone
http://www.unlockit.co.nz
You have to change your Iphone APN to your carrier, click continue, custom APN, choose your carrier / country and hit create profile. Voila, internet, email etc all back whilst on the move. Now just to wait for the jailbreak so we can mess it all up again
Good luck, worked for me
Had the same issue post 4.0 upgrade. Turned off 3G and Cellular Data. Went through a power cyle then turned 3G and Cellular Data back on. 3G sevice is back and internet/email work fine. I thought the OS might just need a "kick in the pants" and it worked for me. Good luck.
Here is the solution
add source: http://cydia.xsellize.com
Search Supreme Preferences 3.0 and install
solution for me, simple really - restore, factory, new user. - do not sync anything (no auto contacts, apps, ect) - disable the 3G, keep the cellular data on, make sure you go to edge before anything, then once you are on edge, log into any wifi access network, you should be on wifi then you should reset the network settings inside the general- reset, because you are on wifi, the phone will download the updated network settings, reboot, then once you reboot, disable the wifi and check if your edge works it should but you have to do a manual reboot on your antenna,
simple, turn on 3g, cellular, but keep roaming off, test the safari, if you don't have anything, enter airplane mode, reboot the phone, once you are back turn off the airplane mode, then tested, it worked for me this way, email me at patch8012@gmail.com

THIS WORKED FOR ME. JUST HIT AU-OPTUS. Install the new settings and it worked.
Hey Matt- you saved me quite a bit! I thank you for posting a solution that actually works
This should be made more public for those who are experiencing the problem... What a simple fix
I have to restore the phone from the backup. tried jailbreak serveral times. every time i restore it from the backup, 3G connection is gone . even without jailbreak, if i restore from the backup, 3G is gone. and When I tried to install the custom vpn, it says only one profile allow to install. I could not install it. anyway that i can manually enter the fake settings to my iphone?
