Here's our question -- if an iPhone 4 really does show up on Verizon in January 2011, how many Droid users would switch to iPhone?

Original Droid, Droid Eris, Droid Incredible, Droid X, upcoming Droid 2. The whole Moto/HTC/Lucasfilm line. Vote in the poll above and give us the details in comments!

  1. Mimi says:

I would only if they found a way to use data and voice at the same time!

  2. Yup says:

Iphone blog? I'm guessing many of us aren't droid users...

  3. HungWell says:

I am SO hoping that Verizon gets the iPhone so I can sit back with my AT&T iPhone and laugh at the growing pains they have over there. Hopefully enough people will abandon AT&T to leave our towers nice and clear while forcing AT&T to offer the unlimited data plan again.

  4. Jerry says:

I'm an android guy through and through .. but I know if the Iphone does make it to Verizon .. Android will get a big dent .. but eventually it will wake back up .. right now the Android OS is selling mroe than the IOS 2 quarters in a row... so it's not a fluke... but that came from a major boost from Verizon.. Verizon could do the same for IOS

  5. Jbbarrette says:

    @hungwell.....exactly!

  6. Adrian says:

Actually it depends more on how I feel about AT&T when a verizon iPhone comes out. AT&T hasn't been horrible for me and I have the unlimited data plan. However I'm starting to notice the dropped calls and dead zones.

  7. Shrike says:

Nope. Had Verizon before and signal quality was no better. Worse yet, I'll get lower data speeds. Sounds like a lose-lose for me.

  8. Dfhv says:

    Droid 4?

  9. thomas b says:

Ummm JERRY wake up please the only reason android is out selling ios is because the android os is on like 70 phones! Iphone is the only phopne ios, needless to say your comment is useless. You can put any android phone against iphone in sales and you would see how much more iphone crushes android. Move along now

  10. iamdorkster says:

I guess I'm on of the few to not have any problems with AT&T. I live in Buffalo, NY & have been with AT&T since 2008 without any driving reason to switch to Verizon.

  11. Jason says:

The question is, would Apple be wiling to deal with Verizon's slow download/upload speeds with the same patience they have had for AT&T's poor voice coverage?

  12. Steve Woz says:

I hope rene isn't taking this poll serious.... This site is called 'The iPhone Blog'. lol of course everyone at 'The iPhone Blog' wants an iPhone. Put this poll up on Engadget, techcrunch, or lifehacker. That would make more sense.

  13. thomas b says:

Put this poll up on androidcentral and see the results!

  14. Seb_or_Sam says:

I'm on Verizon, and I'm not a Droid owner- I use a Palm Pre Plus. If there was a Verizon iPhone I wouldn't give up my Pre- I choose to use webOS not because I have to, but because its the best OS for me. Now it may not be for you, and that's fine. To each their own. But I would buy a Verizon iPhone and use it as my second phone. I love the iPhone hardware and iOS, while I don't like it as much as webOS, is really a great OS and is easily #2. I'd love to carry around a Verizon iPhone along with my beloved Pre Plus. That would be awesome.

  15. iDavey says:

Thomas B: That "reasoning" is getting pretty old. Android is Android because it offers choice. iPhone is iPhone because it keeps it simple. The fact that the iPhone doesn't have 20 million models is what makes it unique in a smartphone world of 5 models per year (Excluding WebOS).

So please stop with that. For all you know, different models or carrier variations would just stretch the current numbers and might not even add to it substantially.

  16. Steve Woz says:

@hungwell I don't think they will have growing pains. Verizon already has more subscibers than AT&T and a recent study showed that Verizon users use more data than iPhone users on AT&T. So if anything the data consumption would decrease and it would be easier on Verizon since iPhone owners are mostly woman, children, and the elderly.

  17. Darwin says:

I have a Droid X and an iPhone 4. I'm geeky like that. The iPhone 4 will continue to work with the new higher speed AT&T 4G signal while the Droid X will need an upgrade to work with LTE or actually replace the phone entirely. So I may sjut stick with the iPhone 4 on AT&T.

  18. carolinamic says:

@ Steve Woz- I have and iPhone4 and the only reason I don't use as much data as my android co workers is bc my signal on base is trash while they have full bars. Then when I come home it's straight wifi. So I think signal strength might gave something to do with data consumption.

  19. chris says:

@Darwin AT&T does not have LTE(4G) towers no matter phones yet. Maybe you are talking about AT&T's HSDPA network that runs at 7.2mbps but thats not 4G. Even thought it is fast (I get about 4.5 to 5.0mbps where I live) real LTE will be much faster.

  20. chris says:

@carolinamic Don't even respond to his comment he is trolling "iPhone owners are mostly woman, children, and the elderly.". Tell that to my dozen mid 20's to early 30's friends.

  21. Thom says:

Can't answer that one. I've been an iPhone user from day one.

  22. Mark Hernandez says:

Totally worthless poll, designed to get people to visit the page?

    Shame on you Rene.

    Mark

  23. jimbo says:

    @Hungwell, @Jbbarrette

Data to date says Verizon will handle it quite nicely, and, in fact, handles bigger strain already, both in total and on average.

From "iPhone not king pig: Verizon 3G phone users gobble most data"

"According to Validas, the average data consumption for non-Blackberry Verizon smartphones was 421MB per month, compared to the 338MB per month consumed by AT&T iPhone users. 11 percent of Verizon subscribers use between 500MB and 1GB per month, while only 5.6 percent of iPhone users do the same. In fact, although many iPhone users complained when AT&T recently put a 2GB data cap on its subscribers, only 1.6 percent of iPhone users used that much bandwidth according to Validas' data, compared to 4 percent of Verizon smartphone users."

  24. LCW says:

    Screw verizon!

  25. LCW says:

Just imagine the complaints rolling once the bitchy vzw customers get a hold of it...

  26. Tebow says:

..hey Rene, i find it funny that this is an Apple-Loving-Site, but only 56% of people thus far said they would switch to the Monkey Toy... kind of sad really..

@Mark: i completely agree with you here.. shame on you indeed Rene.. pure shame..

  27. Mike says:

Are you kidding? I'm about to switch to Verizon so I can GET a Droid. Even with all the money I've spent on apps, why would I want to keep investing in this closed platform that dictates almost everything I can do with my phone?

  28. Taylorh says:

Now an interesting poll to run would be "Woukd you switch from AT&T to Verizon if Verizon gets the iPhone"? a) Yes, immediately and I'd even pay the ETF b) Yes, after my contract expires c) Maybe d) no

  29. zero credibility says:

@mike, you've got to get a grip with this 'open' and 'closed' BS, when you've got your new droid tell me how you changed the default search engine away from google... lmao open

  30. James says:

I'm actually thinking of switching TO the droid.

  31. D'ron says:

First of all, we need to stop talking about a iPhone on Verizon until we at least see a unit in "the wild". And second, Verizon doesn't need the iPhone (one look at their "numbers" would confirm that)... Apple's more likely to "take their talents" to T-Mobile one day. If Apple goes to T-Mobile for example, it would only lessen AT&T's grip on second place and make Verizon's first place "hold" stronger.

  32. tino72 says:

I would consider it possibly. I recently sold.my iphone 4 and left for a droid x and verizons excellent coverage. So a l

  33. tino72 says:

Redesigned antenna design on verizons LTE network could be a beast. And to the person speaking about the iphones impact on verizons network everyones used att as a ginny pig on what not to do. Verizon users already use more data anyway.

  34. frodo19 says:

I am already using the Droid on VZW. If VZW gets the iPhone, I will get one and try it out, but it will take that period of testing to determine whether I stick with that or the Droid. I already think very highly of my Droid as both a tool and a toy.

  35. Jerry says:

@hungwell ... Verizon customer USE MORE DATA than AT&T so stop with the excuses of why AT&T 's network sucks so bad... Android users on Verizon have proven that the data is not the reason why AT&T 's network sucks..

  36. Draino623 says:

Returned my iPhone 4 for the Samsung Captivate. iOS needs a face lift and needs to get out of 2008.

  37. PeterM11 says:

Better question would be if AT&T iPhone owners would pay up to switch to Big Red.

I would consider it, but I'm undecided. Almost all of my family is on Verizon except for me now so I'd love it to be able to use mobile to mobile minutes instead of my anytime minutes BUT thanks to the commentors here, I realized, Verizon still doesn't let you use voice and data at the same time? That might be a deal breaker for me. Maybe it'll be allowed on LTE. Once LTE is out, that's when I'd really be considering a switch. I don't know if I would though just because of the damn $325 early cancelation fee. Plus the money to buy the new phone. Ugh. I don't want to have to pay close to $700 dollars just to switch to Verizon and get a phone that'll work with it. Hopefully by the time my AT&T contract is up, it'll be on Verizon too.

  38. Jason says:

Just because Verizon users use more data per user doesn't mean verizon is processing more data than AT&T. If you look at the study, it excludes blackberry smart phones I believe, which still control a large part of verizons smart phone population in the wild. We should all be smart enough to realize the number of android users on Verizon doesn't come close to matching the # of iPhone users...

  39. mkoz44 says:

I think it would be interesting to see the Canadian perspective of this whole debate, seeing as all of the big 3 (and Virgin) carry the iPhone. Personally, I'm using a 3GS at the moment with plans to switch to the HTC Desire in the next week. It's way to hard to say from an American perspective, but at least up north, we have the choice (which is rare for Canadian Telecom). I know some of the American's might not care, but it would be interesting considering we don't have to be forced to go with a certain provider for the iPhone.

  40. John "Cas" Elm says:

Funny, 75% if people on the "iPhone blog" would when 25% over at droid central would... I'm guessing ;-)

  41. John "Cas" Elm says:

    Maybe 50% lol

  42. Glenn says:

Depends on the plan, and which carrier works the best for your area. If you have good service, and a better data plan with verizon, yes to a switch. If not, stay with AT&T.

  43. Tebow says:

@"Cas"... please rephrase your post so that it makes sense.. what are you trying to say??

@Rene.. hey buddy, it's down to 53% now.. getting more and more sad as the day continues.. Enjoy 3rd place.

  44. Andrew says:

Wow, do people really have such a tiny grasp of simple mathematics?

Even if Verizon smartphone users are averaging a little more data usage per user, past reports indicate that iPhone users on AT&T outnumber Verizon smartphone users by many millions. This means AT&T handles much more data than Verizon, who I believe wouldn't be able to handle the bandwidth stampede of the iPhone.

Let's not be fooled by simple numbers and marketing from Verizon. (Also, if you watched Steve Jobs' talk at D8, he talks about how AT&T is handling more data by far than all other networks combined.)

  45. Andrew says:

Also, I'm actually pleasantly surprised by how solid AT&T is in my area. From what everybody says, you'd think it was made from cups and string.

Just today, someone was trying to show off the hot spot feature of their Palm Pre Plus (which is admittedly a really cool feature), but it stopped working because they had poor signal from Verizon. I, on the other hand, had just fine 3G signal on my iPhone 4. Very anecdotal, but Verizon is not the end-all-be-all.

  46. TK says:

I voted "Maybe, depends on which Droids are available when iPhone 4 launches." I have the original Droid and the iPhone isn't the greatest phone out there anymore as the competition has caught up. I like what Android can do when it comes to multitasking (the iPhone 4 does not multitask, if an app has to be programmed for save states, that's not multitasking, that's a sorry excuse for multitasking). And I like using widgets.

  47. iPhreak says:

Luv VZW coverage but the voice/data at the same time is the kicker for me. I'll stick with a few dropped calls until LTE rolls out. And to be honest, I use my phone WAY more for texting, emailing and surfing the web than I do actual calls. Andoid OS does look pretty slick may have too many tweaks for my liking though.

  48. KiserSose says:

after typing what seemd like an essay and for me to accidentally hit the backspace key i purty much said screw it haha.So Ill make it as short as possible now.I voted on "others" why?? seems like so many just want to jump on the bandwagon of "I have the smartest phone out there" but forget to really disect what they really have and in the end they are only lookin at the "face value" of whats in there hand .Simplicity and user friendly dont always go hand in hand. Some OS's and hardware were made to look pretty and made to sell the masses because they think this is what they want and know they can reel in the money on it (ex Iphone..)but they forget key reasons as to why we carry these devices ..(like the useage of a working phone). Then there are some who want to get on the bandwagon of "smartphones" and integrate there world dominance of the web world(Android/MS..etc)And where these seem to fail is they overlook the true multitask of the many parts of a smarthphone,PDA,multimedia device.I will continue to hang on to the WebOS device. It seems to keep progressing in all aspects where true Multitasking comes from. The cofounder of PAlM long ago said this was going to be the future and here we are.We have many to choose from but like i said some are just at face value a "smartphone" and some really know how to make it userfriendly and simple to use.So really think about how you answered that survey.Does it really work for how you intend to use it or is it going to just be another device you will be selling on CL one day or ebay because it becomes nothing more than a paperweight because the newer version of it has just a few more bells and whistles to captivate you just so you can say " i have the smartest phone out there" :P

  49. TK says:

Actually now that I think about it, I don't think I would change, Android has Adobe Flash now so now I can view websites with embedded videos. The iPhone will never have that, I know everyone is screaming from the hilltops for the death of Flash and for HTML5 to take over.

But right now the quality for HTML5 for video playback is garbage and for all the websites to covert to HTML5 is probably going to take a few years. Youtube is still running HTML5 beta and finding videos in HTML5 on YouTube is like finding a needle in a haystack and the quality is junk. But a lot of the websites I go to use blip.tv which is Flash and I can watch them on my Droid now.

So until HTML5 takes over and when Flash is replaced, which Flash being replaced will either never happen as it's used everywhere or take a very long time to disappear or will be replaced by some new version that is an evolved form of Flash, I don't think I would own an iPhone since it wouldn't be able to serve my needs until a few years from now.

Also I would like the iPhone's screen to be a 4.3 inch screen.

  50. jp says:

i wouldn't buy apple products going forward. the reception issues on both iphone and ipad and even mac suck sooooo bad. It's frustrating to pay a lot of money and not being able to get the best experience.

  51. kev says:

Rene I'm one that got a Droid because I got tired of waiting for a iPhone on VZW. A few months ago I would've answered yes without a thought but now that I'm able to customize my phone in so many different ways, it's like I get a new phone every few weeks, that I find it hard to say yes.

  52. Ben says:

I am not on Verizon. I am on Sprint and own an EVO. Up to a few months ago, I would have tried an iphone anytime. I own an ipod so I knew what to expect. Now that I have my EVO, I would not switch to an Iphone if it was ever sold on Sprint. May be the next generation.

  53. verks says:

After owning the first three iPhones I could never see switching to Verizon for it until out catches up with the latest Android devices. I loved the iPhone but have grow cold to the lack of innovation from Apple. For a company that introduced such a great device to string the consumer with such incremental upgrades year after year is frustrating. On a 4th gen now and there have been no improvements on notifications, calendar reminders/widget, led and screen size to name a few. It's about customization anymore and that is anti Apple. My wife and I were both iPhone owners now I'm on the EVO and she will soon have a Galaxy S from a Hero. Oh and good for Rene, the more visitors to the site the better.

  54. 4 Corner Hustler says:

    I have a Palm Pre.

It is Gone no matter what. but my next phone is an Iphone. Droids are good. But my next phone is an iphone and i'll never buy a palm phone again. No matter what hardware they bring out cause webos has so many issues like few mainstream apps, not as good as ipod music player and tons of small things. as for verizon, sprint or at&t i'll go whatever is cheapest for data cause i don't talk much.

  55. 4 Corner Hustler says:

oh and unlike the prefanboys who are apple haters i got a Pre cause i wanted an alternative that did what ipod does NOT cause i'm an ipod hater. Pre didn't come close to delivering, on media, apps, and details so sprint pre is gone.

  56. Pipester says:

I would provided they fix the antenna issue.

  57. Tebow says:

...People! should i have cheerios or frosted flakes this morning??

@Rene: it's now at 52% my friend.. wow...

  58. murphythadog says:

It's the only reason I got a 1 year contract with my current Droid Incredible. I didn't want to be locked into waiting for a whole other year when it comes out in January (wishful thinking). Other than that. I like the droid, its a great device, way better than RIM has to offer but not as much as iPhone (due to the fact that I can't get Guitar Toolbox on Droid) and I suck at guitar.

  59. kayno says:

I'm an iPhone user and I wonder how many of those people who answered yes were current iPhone users.. that data is probably scewed.. This is an iPhone blog.. android central would be the best place to collect data..

  60. Rhit says:

    @ KiserSose:

    TL;DR

Once the Android Market can fully compete with iPhone's AppStore (i.e., has same number of apps and of equal quality and refinement), I'll switch. Until then, iPhone it is.

The bigger Android screens in general (think Droid X) make web browsing so much nicer too.

  61. Tebow says:

@Bob... first of all i would like to say i love your music.. you do good work.. it's a shame you're not alive anymore..

however, the next time you make a post and THINK it's gonna be a good one, THINK AGAIN.... the only thing weak here is your mind b/c you don't even know when you're being brainwashed by your master S.Jobs.. have fun with your iP4 and it's lack of ability to make phone calls or maintain a call..

    Good luck.

  62. Bob Marley says:

Tebow Thanks for the compliment on my music. Being a rastaman, I consider myself a tolerant person.....except when tools like yourself try and tell me, a person who actually owns a iPhone 4, that I have trouble making calls with it. Have you had an opportunity to tear yourself away from "Roid News Weekly" to get a clue yet? How is your battery on that Buy One Get One phone of yours?

Any response to my post? I guess not, because you have nothing to say.

You are a bore, with no game or content. Don't waste mine, or anyone elses time here. Go to your Roid Room and......yeh mon, have "One Love", to quote one of my better known hits.

    Time for a spliff!

  63. Tebow says:

@Bob... although i do love your music, you really seem like a major tool.. but i mean that in that best possible meaning of the word "tool" for you Bob..

as for your post... lay off the drugs before you make posts.. you're lack of originality matches up perfectly with your choice for technology, i.e. iP4...

to answer your brainless posts, it's not Android's fault that your supreme leader S.Jobs refuses to allow his Monkey Toy on other carriers.. and don't talk to me about exclusivity agreements b/c he knew what he was getting into when he signed that thing years ago.. you leader likes to have control over his Monkey Toy and likes to have control over mindless sheep like you.. and it's pretty easy for him to do so, b/c sheep such as yourself will never realize that there's more out there in the world besides iToys..

and since you're so sad that your iToy is in 3rd place, i would like to quote one of your own songs to cheer you up: "No Woman, No Cry"...

    Good Luck.

  64. Bob Marley says:

Jackass. Third place, huh? Behind what, SFB? Im not talking about OS, but phones. You still never answered my question. Avoidance is for ignorant douche bags......umm, yes, we have a winner!

Go on, you must have some clever follow up, Roid Boy.

    Buy One, Get One!

  65. Bob Marley says:

Maybe my question will be answered the forth or fifth time around.

Grandstanding never does any good, Chip. You can quote your tech specs all you want. Are you excited that the Android OS sold more than Apples? If so, sir, then you can celebrate and throw a party. If you want to count 15 or so Roid OS phones selling more than two Apple OS, then giddy up!! Still, that was not my question, and you and your BFF STILL have not answered it yet. Since you are so good at reciting Roid drivel (come to think of it, this is a site for iPhone , hmmm, anyway ), can you tell me what PHONE has sold more units than iPhone? This is getting rather stupid, cause it really does not prove anything. Yet, you like to stick to topic and to Renee's rules. I'll tell you what. I'm in the middle of adding a new riff to "Trenchtown Rock". Appreciate the banter, as always. Yeh mon!

  66. Tebow says:

@Bob... going back to your post #20, you're really an angry little elf aren't you?? and continuing on to your post #22: if you weren't such a tool, you would realize that your question has been answered several times.. hey Mr. Mindless Drone, open your eyes and look around.. there's a world out there outside of iWorld... do us all a favor and stop sucking on S.Jobs' teet..

  67. Did I miss something? Is the iPhone actually coming to Verizon?

  68. Will I am says:

Can we put this debate to bed already? Let's get to what is really important in life. You cannot "do" your phone.

    http://mashable.com/2010/08/10/iphone-sex-okcupid/

  69. Cole Cutts says:

    Douchebag says what?

Oh no, are you now going to read me the riot act for breaking the rules?

    What a dumbass.
