Apple announces App Store volume purchase program
Apple has sent out a note to developers regarding an App Store volume purchase program that allows educational institutions to make bulk purchases at a 50% discount.
We’re pleased to announce the App Store Volume Purchase Program. Education institutions in the United States now have a new way to purchase your apps in volume for distribution to their students and faculty. You can also elect to offer special education pricing on your app when purchased in volume.

This is a way for for educational institutions that want to purchase a large amount of licenses for an iPhone or iPad app without the need for countless individual iTunes accounts. The purchasing of these discounted applications is done with the use of vouchers which can be purchased via the Apple Store for Education in $100, $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 denominations. These very vouchers then can be distributed to the program facilitators to be redeemed within the App Store.

Hmmm. Memo to students: register for your fall semester on your phone using the proprietary University app, for a small fee. If you do it, you get first shot at the classes you want. School pockets $20K, Apple gets $10K, per semester, per school.

if i understand this correctly (i’m still a little confused) this is horrible for apps and education. you see, before this “volume purchase program” all you had to do was buy one app and you could download it on as many devices as you owned. now it sounds like they are making you purchase the app for every device you own. think about it… let’s say you have 100 iPod touch devices at your school and you want to buy a $1.99 app, you will have to spend $200 just to put this one app on your devices, whereas before you paid $1.99 for an app and it went on all your devices. they say some providers may give discounts for bulk purchases, but still, the affordability of these apps and the ability to integrate so many into the classroom was one of the selling points of the iPod touch in the classroom. once people actually start understanding this rule iPad and iPod Touch sales in education will decrease significantly. someone tell me if i’m wrong here.
edtechguy – Apple is definitely not clear on your position however promo codes are given out all of the time and basically it just allows you to install an app to your iOS device. from there just sync to Itunes to copy app over and resync all of your iOS devices to iTunes to get it on all of them. i could be wrong but for regular promo codes this is usually the case.
