ipod case with camera cutout in center

Reader Gerald spotted an iLuv case with camera cutout in the center in a local Marshall's clothing store:

[The case] was labeled as an iPod Touch 2nd Generation hard shell case made by a company called iLuv. The reason i liked this case so much was because it had a spot for a rear camera, and the dummy cardboard example of the iPod clearly showed what the camera looked like. I snapped a pic as proof.

Now what could that have been doing there?

Could the camera possibly be in the middle? If the back of the new iPod is made of aluminum, couldn't they just put the WiFi chip underneath the Apple logo like the iPad?

  2. Wesley says:

There were a lot of cases just like this one on sale months before the third generation iPod Touch was revelaed, one of the places I saw one was DealExtreme.

It is clear that the hardware had a space for this camera, indicating that Apple gave up the idea (probably when Steve came back, and didn't approve the bad quality of image).

But that was last year, the new model we're going to see on September must have the so waited camera on a different location.

  3. Juan Ramirez says:

Cases like those have been seen at places like Marshalls, TJ Max & Ross. Case manufacturers probably started making cases like these when the prototype iPod touch leaked out last year with the camera in the back.

Case manufacturers probably jumped the gun and started production of these only to soon find out that the 3rd generation didn't have a camera on the back.

Therefore they had to get rid of these already produced cases by sending them to these discount/clearance stores.

  4. SockRolid says:

I wish that Apple would fake out the case makers (if they haven't already.) The case makers all get leaked specs for future Apple products, they all try to beat each other to market and release cases before the actual iDevice is even announced, and the basic design of future iDevices is revealed before Steve can do it himself. I'm sure Steve hates that. . So I'd expect Apple to leak false specs to 1. find out where the leak is, and 2. cause the case makers using the leaks to lose money after they rush the wrong designs to market. That may have happened last year with the camera-less iPod Touch. . Legitimate case makers don't use leaked specs, and they are at a disadvantage to the sleazy ones who do use leaked specs.

Awww.... I have a case like that, its a clear silicone soft case with a circular hole on the back in the middle... I dont use it, but ill see if i can find it. The dummy showed no camera, otherwise i wouldve sent a pic to u guys sooner.

  6. wow, 2 bad case comps. are left in the dark, imagine how many layoffs iluv has to go through with every new leak!

  7. MFi Developer says:

Apple does not release details such as if camera exist or not to us In the MFi program. We have to wait for the events just like all of you. Of course I am speaking from point of view representing a small company - possibly different for the big boys.

  8. frog says:

Not new, these cases appeared about 12 months ago - indeed you'll still see them available in retail stores occasionally.
