iOS vs Linux vs Android internet share

Net Applications is reporting that iOS has passed Linux to become the third most popular platform accessing the internet. With a 1.1% share, they're still behind big brother Mac OS X's 5% and way behind Windows all-encompassing 91.3% share. However, for a mobile OS, especially considering the next most popular mobile OS, Android, is at 0.2%, that's a fairly huge accomplishment. According to Vince Vizzaccaro, VP of NetApps:

“Whatever the sales are, we’re seeing iOS totally dominate the market on the Web. iOS has nearly a 6:1 advantage over Android.”

Eh. Given the high adoption rate of greeks and mainstream now, Android will probably catch up quickly. Linux probably won't. Mobile as a whole is on a tremendous growth curve.

Apple can't be stopped. Cant wait until iPod Touch with data services similar to the iPad 3G. And when FaceTime will become available via MacBooks and iDevices

I'm very suprised by these numbers... Sure, smartphones are only a small portion compared to all other existing platforms. But according to these number less than 2% of the hits on websites are made from smartphone? I would expect way more than that...

  4. DanielB says:

Heh "high adoption rate of greeks and mainstream now" ... Greeks do it better, I guess...

  5. Webvex says:

According to that chart, iOS didn't just pass Linux. Is shows Linux trending downward pretty steeply. It appears to be due to Linux declining, rather than a significant change in iOS..

  6. ShevonJames says:

    @ P

    Data only of course

  7. pbn says:

There's gotta be something wrong with that chart. It says Linux is on the decline, while actually Linux is growing, both at home and at the office. More and more businesses are switching to Linux as desktop operating system.

  8. G says:

android IS LINUX with google GUI on top as linux is linux with gnome on top
