New iPad 2 with FaceTime coming early?

iPad 2 with FaceTime video calling is coming ahead of schedule according to Apple Insider who cite "a person with proven knowledge of Apple's future product plans". They say Q1 of next year, but perhaps as soon as before the holiday season.

Q1 2011 wouldn't really be ahead of schedule, however, as that's pretty much when we expect them. (iPad was announced at the beginning of Q1 2010 and shipped just after the end of Q1, not a huge difference). Before the holidays of this year, however, would be a change.

If that's the plan, they'll have to announce it soon. Apple typically locks holiday lineups in early to get ahead of the sales cycle. With iOS 4.2 for iPad scheduled for November, it would seem to further tighten up the timeline. Then again, we've heard the same rumor about iPhones going on how many years now?

Interestingly:

It's also believed that Apple may striving to embed FaceTime within its entire mobile arsenal before making good on a promissory to open up the standard to the rest of the world, thereby mitigating the market opportunity for rival tablet devices that could incorporate the technology.

As reader Dev keeps telling us:

FaceTime had been submitted to a standards body as an informational draft, but it is still 100% under Apple’s control, and, as Apple has never announced any plans to share control with that standards body, FaceTime is not open in the sense of, say, HTML, but more along the lines of the Flash runtime, in that others can implement, but not contribute. (I am not saying Flash is open, just that it is a mistake to refer to FaceTime as open when the protocol is solely under the control of one company.)

Pushing FaceTime throughout iOS would be great. Pushing it to Windows and Mac would be fantastic. Pushing it out as a completed open standard that anyone else, from Google to Palm to Microsoft to Nokia to BlackBerry and back are implementing would dent at least our small corner of the universe.

At least until multi-person FacesTime calls come next year...

Totally want this one for sure also face time over 3g is actually pretty good i use it more and more after i tell people about it

  2. Paul says:

Can't wait but what am I going to do with my current 64gb 3G?

    • Torria says:

I just bought the 64 3g for myself for christmas. i am also wondering what the second generation ipad will bring. So i will have to sell the current one. So when you figure out what to do with yours please let me in on the secret. but for now i will continue to enjoy my ipad. i use it everyday and have incorporated it into my work life as well as my person life

  3. MattyFresh says:

Thats exactly why im glad i didnt get one yet its a big buy and apple wants me to by a new model every year but we dont by a new model car every year thats why i love hate apple

  4. Anthony says:

Just my luck I literally JUST bought my iPad today. Ive been thinking about buying one for awhile now, and went in the apple store to buy a new touch for my girl, and spontaneously picked an iPad up. I think I might take it back because I didn't even power it on yet.

  5. Schrutefarms says:

Anthony, take it back and wait a bit.

  6. Rene Ritchie says:

It's just a rumor. We get this same rumor about iPhones every year. (Remember the Red iPhone before the holidays! from year's past?)

Enjoy your iPad. If/when a new one comes, see if it's worth an upgrade before you worry.

  7. Anthony says:

I did open the box up and charge it, any chance my buddy at the apple store can hook me up an not charge me the "open box" fee?

Anyone thinking about other updates the iPad 2 will have over the current iPad?

  8. Vince says:

Well anyone else read about the supposed "7" iPad, set to rival the Galaxy tab and ebook readers with it's portability. If this is the device released in November, I'm not quite sure sacrificing screen real estate is worth having facetime. Afterall, it is on my iPhone 4.

  9. Nati says:

I'm trying to decide whether to get an iPod touch 4 with 32 GB of storage or just wait for the iPad 2 to keep me from throwing my 3G at the wall. Any thoughts guys?

  10. Gregg says:

I already sold my iPad. Too hard to type on. And it just wasn't worth the cost justification.

  11. Take the iPad back and get the new one

  12. MattyFresh says:

Exactly dont listen to fanyboy rene what do u think hes gonna say ofcourse takr it back save ur hard earned money for somthing new like ipad 2 lol

  13. Mike says:

    Matty-

With that logic, when iPad 2 comes out, he'll need to take it back and wait for...iPad 3. And then iPad 4.

It's technology...theres always a new model around the corner. If you're always waiting for the "next" one, you'll never buy, and never enjoy anything.

Plus, a 7" iPad seems...pointless. And FaceTime on the current 9.7" iPad would be horribly awkward in terms of holding it in front of your face to actually use it. I love FaceTime on the iPod 4G, but it seems unnecessary on iPad. As a 1st Gen iPad owner, I can say that if the only real upgrade is FaceTime or a change in screen size, then I won't care in the slightest. Retina display isn't possibly on such a big screen without a giant price jump, so that's not an issue either.

Bottom line is...enjoy your effin iPad and don't worry about the next one.

I'll hopefully be buying mine in the coming days.

  16. Vince says:

Btw with 4.2 coming out in November, it'll seem like a whole new device all together. Haha.

  17. Matt Hall says:

So by saying that FaceTime would be awkward on the iPad you are saying you don't look at your iPad while you are using it? That seems a bit odd. I wonder how you do that. Visual Bluetooth or something.... Hmmm

  18. Paul says:

When the next pad comes out I will buy it again but no need to ditch this one I have a wife and two teenagers who are also hooked I can easily see this household ending up with four ipads!

  19. Christian says:

I wonder if we in Scandinavia will get one this time...

  20. Loggers says:

I would love FaceTime on the iPad but I've not long bought mine!

I wouldn't take it back if I had the choice as these are just rumours and I'd just end up always waiting for the better version to be released

  21. Paul Nelson says:

I doubt Apple will release the next iPad early they seem pretty consistent with there release times. I would take my iPad back or hold off buying one, you'd never buy anything in fear of a newer better one. If you want one get one, FaceTime isn't really that big a feature to wait for. Besides if FaceTime is that important for you get an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4 instead.

  22. Agostinho says:

    Good news

Glad i didnt buy the 1st gen ipad now, the next one will be something special

  23. Jcal08 says:

I'm waiting for a new iPad for sure... I just feel like the first one is just the tip of the ice burg... I said it right after I watched the keynote, that I will buy the next iPad, because it will for sure have a cam, be way more apps, and possibly support text books.. I think it will be like the iPhone, 1st gen was just a taste, 3g was a big leap, then 3Gs was just a minor boost up with the same form factor, and the 4th gen will be super sexy. So I want the 2nd and 4th.

  24. Mike says:

I'm waiting on 2nd and 4th gen iPad as well.

  25. Mark says:

I wonder if Apple would consider a small, cheap webcam 'dongle' that plugs into the dock connector? Would be a simple way to Facetime-enable the large number of existing iOS devices that don't have a camera...

  26. Tom Stephens says:

File this story with the "Apple TV changing its name to iTV" nonsense. There is no substance to it. Apple sticks to product launch schedules for a reason. You can expect to hear about the next generation iPads in late January.

  27. Darkstar says:

I'll consider buying an iPad 2 as long as it has a Camera that can record 1080p video, 128 gigs of memory, Facetime support and a retina display.

  28. Maniacfive says:

"As a 1st Gen iPad owner, I can say that if the only real upgrade is FaceTime or a change in screen size, then I won’t care in the slightest."

And besides, my iPad replaced my iBook G4, which was still going strongly albeit slowly after 6 years. So hey, if I'm using my ipad for half that long, good investment.

  29. Dimwit says:

Personally, I'm waiting for 4K video support. Both viewing as well as shooting.

  30. Dennis says:

Considering the iPad's size and weight, we can all look forward to video chat involving up-the-nose camera angles.

  31. Mike says:

    Matt-

Obviously i look at my iPad while using it. And if my FaceTime partner wanted to talk to me while looking up my nostrils, then the current iPad would be great for it. To get a nice picture for Ft, the camera really needs to be straight in front of your face...try holding an iPad with your arms straight out comfortably for more than a few minutes. The thing is light, but not that light. Video calls are great for iPhone/iPod touch, but for something this large and bulky, it just doesn't seem necessary or comfortable. A 7-inch iPad would be more practical for FT, but I don't want that size. I bought the iPad mostly because of it's larger screen for productivity/schoolwork. If I want a small iPad interface, ill use my iPod touch. Both devices are great, but they have very clear (and usually very different) uses.

  32. Mike says:

Also, the logistics of putting a retina display on an iPad (the one thing that I'd love to have in a future upgrade) just don't seem possible at this point. Cost, overheating, and battery life issues make iPad Retina display, at least for the time being, a pipe dream, IMHO. It would be great for sure, but I think we're a little ways away from that.

  33. mbp1915 says:

Or maybe a small camera on a cable for iPad, 3Gs, and previous iPod touch owners........???????

  34. Glenn says:

I have been holding out for an iPad 2. This would be nice. Hope it happens.

  35. SockRolid says:

Bad idea to release iPad 2 before the holidays. That would tell the world to not buy iPads until the holidays every year. Better to release iPad 2 just after CES, so holiday shoppers have no choice but to buy the current model. Unless, of course, Apple also keeps the old model alongside the new. They could drop the16GB wi-fi and wi-fi + 3g 2010 prices by $100, then sell the 2011 models at the standard prices. Still, I think it's too late. Apple likes to advertise their holiday lineup for months in advance, which is why the iPod event is in September.

  36. SockRolid says:

Could there be an iPad 2 for AT&T and Verizon? If the rumors of Apple buying CDMA chips are true, then I would expect Apple to do a Verizon iPad in Q1 next year. Verizon's CEO is going to deliver a keynote speech at CES in January. Coincidence? I don't think so. He could announce a Verizon-connected 3G iPad model at CES that is a variation of the 2010 iPad. That way he wouldn't be stealing Steve's 2011 iPad-with-FaceTime thunder. And iPad would once again dominate CES news, even though Apple isn't officially an exhibitor. (Oh, and as for a Verizon iPhone before June 2011? Absolutely no way. Summer is the "iPhone quarter" for Apple. The iPad quarter is Q1.)

  37. Jay says:

I was going to wait for the iPad 2 and did not. I got my iPad about a month ago and could not be happier with my decision. As someone said with technology there will always be something new. Get it, enjoy it and if the new features are worth it, upgrade. If you buy the iPad today say 64gb with wifi, you pay $700. If the iPad 2 comes out and price points at $800, you can sell what you got for $400 and upgrade. Someone will always buy your old one.

  38. Paul says:

There is just no way apple will be able to sell iPad 2 before the holidays. Just not enough production time and they just now have a solid production of the current iPad. Im betting it will remain on the current cycle and we'll see a refresh in April.

  39. Jpwillis says:

I was going to hold out for the next gen iPad but I caved in and my wife got me the current model and I couldn't be happier with it! When I can print natively I'll have what I need from my iPad. I returned the favor by getting her an iPhone 4 so we have our facetime already. In the spectrum of things there needs to be a non camera model to be taken seriously as a business machine so the first gen covers that already

  40. Curt says:

I think its time for a keyboard/touchpad/stand for the iPad2... It could attach to the back or slide out and around with a groove in it to act as a stand... Like the thin iMac keyboard... Apple iStand... Just saying... Apple, you can send me a free ipad3 for the idea... :)

  41. Illestskillest says:

Damn I hope it doesn't come that soon I just got my iPad this week :/

  42. Illestskillest says:

    @Curt

Keyborad I can see but an external touch pad? Why? It has a touch screen... You Might as well buy a laptop.

  43. Ben says:

I got the iPod touch 3rd generation when it came out last year in September, but recently the screen cracked. It still works, but I can't read the screen too well anymore. I was tempted to buy the new iPod touch 4 but now when apple says the iPad will get 4.2 iOS in November and it will come to verison october 28th I am thinking they will release a new model in October or November. Obviously the 3G model for verison will be modified a little but I am after the wifi model and am wondering how soon a update for it will come out. What should I do? Buy the 1st generation iPad now, wait for a new model, or but the new iPod touch?

  44. Scott says:

Does anyone think the new version will have a screen that is easy to read regardless of the direction of the sun to the screen?

  45. sammy says:

yes, I think the new ipad will come out, and I sure hope so. I think many people will get it for the holidays and it would sure be ahead of the other competitors!

  46. David says:

I agree with Sammy, it will come out because it wants to get ahead of the competitors. But I'm not 100% sure it will be before the holidays, we sure hope so though!

  47. Jim says:

yes, the new ipad will come out before the holidays! I truly think it will. Hopefully it has USB connection, and a camera. Hopefully, it won't be too much money either.

  48. j.d. says:

guys, help, i can not decide what to get for christmas???? ipad 1, ipod touch 4, or should I wait for the new ipad??? please help by putting your suggestions below!

  49. gerrard says:

I can honestly say that the reason I didn't buy the 1st gen iPad was because it was the first tablet released by Apple. I figured there would be some bugs discovered and apple would have no trouble fixing them. But I didn't want to waste my money in case it wasn't something worth buying, now that the iPad 2 is coming out, ill gladly purchase it because apple knows how the public will respond once they get it out. They have confidence in it now, instead of the 1st iPad which was a test to see how the public responded. The public responded positively so they'll make the iPad 2.
