Verizon to offer CDMA iPad 3G

Hot off the heels of the Verizon iPhone announcement comes a report that Verizon Wireless will soon be offering Apple's iPad with an embedded CDMA chip to better compete with AT&T. From Bloomberg:

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon’s network.

Apple began selling the iPad through Verizon back in October of last year starting at $629.99, but users were somewhat restricted by the need to carry Verizon's MiFi card wherever they go (unlike AT&T). Neither Verizon nor Apple have announced when a CDMA iPad will be available.

With all the Verizon iPhone news today it's nice to see Verizon taking steps to ensure a quality experience for iPad users, too. But with all those new iPhone users coming onboard, do you think their network will be able to keep up with demand - especially if they see an influx in iPad subscribers? Sound off in the comments below!

What does all this CDMA iPhone talk mean for us Canadians?

  2. sting7k says:

Why wouldn't you just get the wifi only version and use your iPhone (on Verizon) as the internet connection with it's new mobile hotspot?

    • firesign3000 says:

That's assuming someone has/wants a VZW iPhone. If so that would work fine, at least until you have to answer a call and everybody using the hotspot gets kicked off.

  3. Bernie says:

Why does everyone seem to think the iPhone will kill VZW's network? If all of the Android phones didn't kill it, the iPhone won't.

    • Dyvim says:

Because (a) There may well be many more iPhone users than Android users (AT&T has something like twice the number of smartphone users as Verizon does, mostly due to iPhone), and (b) iPhone users have been shown to use more data than Android users. But it's all additive: their network will have to handle the load of new smartphone subscribers plus existing smartphone subscribers. I think they'll handle it ok- they've had enough time to prepare.

  4. Keith says:

    Bernie is correct.

  5. Dyvim says:

Would a Verizon CDMA iPad also offer the same WiFi Mobile HotSpot as the iPhone 4? I wonder. Could be a good differentiator.

    • West says:

As is no AT&T app on the current iPad, I find it hard to believe Apple would let Verizon put an app on theirs. It's not impossible but considering how Verizon capped their Mifi data, for use with the iPad...

But you never know. They've been inconsistent in other ways and so has AT&T.

  6. MIKE says:

Why buy a VZW iPhone 4 on Feb 10 instead of waiting a little over 4 months for the iPhone 5 in June? Same would apply for a CDMA iPad when iPad 2 should be out in Mar/Apr? Unless that CDMA iPad is the iPad 2.

    • West says:

Why buy a Verizon iPhone 4 at all, when there's an AT&T model? Because, for some, the choice boils down to "carrier first, device second."

      • Josh says:

Cause att sucks...data fluctuates really band..verizon never had a problem and all the people saying att had more load on the network your wrong .cause you forgot about all the broadband cards verizon has on their network that att doesn't cause verizon has way more nation wide data coverage for the cards than att.i know alot of people with att phones and still have an verizon data card.

  7. brad says:

So are we talking a current iPad 3G or a possible future iPad? It seems silly to offer the current one as a future model for them, when the next iPad is (theoretically) a month or so from being announced. Or perhaps we're all wrong and apple is NOT releasing a new iPad anytime soon.......(dun dun dun!!!!)

  8. Shaun says:

Will Verizon receive the iPhone 5 in June or next January? The answer to this question will help answer many subsequent questions.

  9. Fraydog says:

I have an idea... Get an LTE option on the iPad. It will not as severely affect battery life and form factor in a tablet.

Thanks , I have recently been looking for info about this subject for ages and yours is the greatest I have discovered till now. But, what concerning the bottom line? Are you sure in regards to the source?|What i do not understood is actually how you're not actually a lot more well-liked than you might be now. You're so intelligent.
