State of the iPhone iOS 4.3 Jailbreak

I've been receiving a lot of questions about the state of current jailbreaks, especially when it comes to the just released iOS 4.3 beta and the Verizon iPhone (demo models ran iOS 4.2.5). The jailbreak community is working on a jailbreak but they have stated it will not come out as long as iOS 4.3 is in beta. There's a good reason for this. Most jailbreakers already realize it's a cat and mouse game with Apple.

If one of the dev teams has an exploit, they don't want to burn it. If they release it now, Apple can patch it before the final release and it's of use to no one. Unlocker @MuscleNerd isn't planning on releasing an unlock until iOS 4.3 is official, and for good reason. Here's what he has to say -

Official iPhone unlock statement: no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out

I can't imagine a general jailbreak tool being any different. No point burning exploits for no good reason. So on that front, just be patient. And as always, don't upgrade right away if you plan on jailbreaking.

In the mean time, you can make sure you save your SHSH blobs if you're already jailbroken. You can also read through our jailbreak starter's guide if you're curious but new to the jailbreak scene.

Click through for a current list of firmwares and what your jailbreak options are under each firmware. We've also got some links handy after the break to walkthroughs explaining each method.

Please note that redsn0w is currently a tethered jailbreak. There is a redsn0w beta out that allows for an untethered jailbreak but it's still got issues. I personally recommend staying on 4.1 until an easier (less buggy) solution is available if you can.

Keep in mind you always need to check your device type against each of these methods to make sure it's compatible. Click through to the links for more detailed descriptions of each and what they can offer you. If you still have questions, make sure to check out the TiPb jailbreak forums.

Daily Tip: How to save a picture from the web to your iPhone, iPad
  1. Rene Ritchie says:

I tried Jailbreaking iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3 last night with the unofficial pwnagetool and kept getting an error trying to install the custom firmware. Damn I miss my LockInfo and BiteSMS :(

    • Another one bites the jailbreak dust! Withdrawls suck! I had it when there wasn't a jb for 4.1 yet and my phone crapped out. It SUCKED. Are your 4.2.1 blobs saved? You already wrote your 4.3 walkthrough, downgrade grasshopper! Apple is still signing 4.2.1 anyways so you don't need blobs. :)

    • SnoopinNewton says:

Idiot..... Use ireb to pwn it so you can install custom firmware.......... Welcome :)

  2. CP7 says:

is there a point to these useless jailbreak posts?

    • frank sobotka says:

yes, there is! as someone who jailbreaks, i like to get the status of jailbreak developments at the same place where i get other iphone news; without having to scour forums, dev-team posts and other sites for the latest JB progress report.

    • BobbyMcWho says:

Just because you do not find them informative does not mean that others will not. This site is for ALL iDevice users, and therefore all users are entitled to having articles published that are informative to them. That is also the purpose of having various writers for TiPb, as to assure a variety of topics are covered.

    • iLoveRSX says:

      Troll like trolling. Nuff said.

    • Slalomskie says:

Yes, not only to be informative to those of us who like to read and learn about jail breaking but to give you @CP7 something to complain about since there is no other contributions you have to society.

  3. Jimi says:

@Rene why do you sensor curse words on this site....it is the Internet and all?

  4. The Truth says:

@CP7 obviously you have no clue of all the great n awesome tweaks that are achieved once you JB!

  5. Boots says:

But what about 4.4... they will burn the exploit on 4.3... I mean the game is always continuing...

  6. CP7 says:

    @The Truth

You obviously didn't get my point. I meant to say I can get my updates from musclenerd and their blog. Apparently it does make sense for people like you who are clueless.

    @frank

fair enough. I guess I will just learn to ignore.

  7. Kei says:

I'm beginning to think all the dev team is good for is repacking the cracks the single genius Geohot makes FOR them; or unusable tools like redsn0w

  8. The Truth says:

@CP7 haha I've been jailbreaking my iPhone since da 1st generation iPhone came out, back when it actually required da end user to do about 30 steps to JB, so to answer to your reply no I'm not clueless!

  9. MattyFresh says:

Renee i respect u so much more for saying u miss ur jailbreak apps

  10. Phxblue says:

Why are you guys bickering? Quit acting like a bunch of juvenile Android fanatics. As for this jailbreak/unlock if you follow these guys on Twitter you'll find these dudes are bickering like children with one another as well. I unfollowed them because i just couldn't stand it in my timeline anymore..

    • Valid point. I post states of articles so people don't have to weed through it. Not to mention several people don't use twitter too. I have them in a list I follow. I only view them when I want to ; )

  11. Kevin says:

I would like to thank the jailbreaking community for helping make the iphone more secure from hacking.

  12. Brandon C. Butler says:

Say what you may about Jailbreaking, but my iPhone was NEVER as useful as it now is once Jailbroken. Rene is just being honest when he says he misses his favorite JB apps. I'd miss 'em too. They're downright useful, goshdarnit. :] #familyfriendly

  13. Jason says:

Waiting for the untethered jailbreak. Wish it would get here. Never jail broke before and interested in trying it

  14. Sebastian says:

I'm still waiting to try the untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.... any news on that?

  15. Rich says:

Quite right. Release a Jailbreak when it's really worth it to users. Nothing, so far, after 4.1 is worth bothering about. 4.3 seems nothing to shout about either, I'll stick with 4.1 until I find something worth the upgrade, I suspect Geohot & Company will too ;)

  16. West says:

I ain't upgrading/updating until an untethered jailbreaking tool is available. Streaming YouTube (and most other) video looks horrible over 3G otherwise. Then there's toggling wifi, Bluetooth, etc.

Some functionality we shouldn't have to do without (like multitasking, sniff).

  17. Andy brown says:

I am a longtime jailbreaker. Each time a new firmware update comes out i try to wait forth new jailbreak. Eventually it gets to a point where new and updated apps require the new firmware and it forces me to upgrade to the new firmware if i want the app. Case in point , I was perfectly content on 4.1. Saw no pressing need to upgrade. Then the new slingplayer and Skype apps came out and FaceTime required 4.2 to work with a Mac or a new iPod touch. These apps and features, I really wanted. So now I am on 4.2 and don't want to deal with a tethered jailbreak. The game continues I guess, very frustrating!

  18. Tinmania says:

@Andy The 4.2.1 untethered jb is out. I am running it right now on my iPhone 4 and iPad.

I guess you never had 4.2b3 blobs saved?

I could not stand being on 4.1 till nearly the end of the year. :(

  19. Amadordiego says:

Just give me a jailbreak that I can use on my Verizon IPhone. I wanna rock CYdia on it asap
