iOS 5 to be previewed next week alongside iPad 2?

Engagdet is updating their previous iPad 2 rumors, saying the SD card and hi-res display didn't make the cut but the sleeker, slimmer form factor did -- along with an iOS 5 preview?
We're hearing it's most likely a thinner, spec-bumped variation of the original iPad with a screen size and resolution identical to the current model. More RAM (512MB) and a more powerful CPU (the A5) are expected as well. It's also a pretty safe bet the tablet will be sporting at least one camera up front -- though if some of those case mockups we've seen tell us anything, expect a shooter around back too. It's also almost guaranteed that we'll see the next version of iOS (number 5 in all likelihood, along with its SDK for devs), and an expansion of Apple's cloud services (that part is a little... foggy right now). Of course, that will perfectly set up Apple's announcement of the iPhone 5 in June, which is when iPad owners can likely expect to be using the new software.
Given the problems it would cause, a hi-res display never seemed likely and as far as the SD card, Apple has an adapter for that. One or two cameras is an interesting question, as is the idea of iOS 5 being previewed at the same event. We've already asked the TiPb nation their thoughts on whether iPad 2 and iOS 5 will share the spotlight so does this change anyone's mind?

Give me new style of of notifications in ios5 and i will be the happiest iphone owner alive
Agree
You will get it done. Check iphonegeeks.co for latest on iOS,iPhone,Apple,Android and Jailbreak
I need to see some cool speed demos to get interested in the iPad 2... that and a high-res rear camera with flash. Without those, I will hold out for the next gen. I had an iPad 1 for quite, and while I really liked it, I will wait for a significant spec jump before replacing it (my original plan was to replace the one I had with iPad2).
I agree. I won't even consider purchasing this next iteration of iPad if the metal back doesn't double as a George Foreman grill. It's insane to expect me to carry two devices to check my e-mails and cook delicious burgers and dogs at the same time.
The iOS 4 preview was April 8th last year and the iPhone OS 3 preview was March 17th 2009, so it's possible. With the iPad 1 release being in January last year it was obviously too early to talk about iOS 4 then, but this time iOS 5 might be ready for a preview.
Without an iOS5 preview, I don't see how the event would be more than 15 minutes long. They're not going to talk about the 2 cameras & spec bumps for an hour. Unless they start talking about all the features iOS4 brought to the iPad all over again, which would make the event even more boring that HP/Palm event.
That's true but they could talk about their cloud service strategy / product rollout, iWork 11 / iWork.com, MobileMe revamp, etc.
generally you're right though.
The first iPad event was able to be an hour long and still be at iOS3, only because nobody had seen what iOS could look like on that size screen.
I'm getting xoom
I like the motorola zoom tablet ad over >>>
Why not 1 GB of RAM?
I can't wait to see what Apple does w/ iOS 5. Google has supplied enough pressure to make them step up and that's exciting. Apple w/ pressure?
Gotta love it.
Also, I don't understand why tablets have two cameras. Do people really walk around holding a tablet up to take pics? :-/ Front facing should be enough.
There is the possibility that people could try using augmented reality apps with the rear facing camera (sort of like in the Samsung Galaxy tab commercials) but then again the iPad is quite large so it would be kind of awkward.
Yeah, good point. I didn't consider that one but beyond that I dont see a huge use for it.
Maybe live streaming to show your surroundings, etc. It could be useful but it wouldn't be the normal "shoot a pic of a building" type of ordeal.
John I'm right here with you, the iPad is far too large to be a comfortable shooter, I can see them adding a front facing camera to further expand the "FaceTime" ecosystem but a rear shooter is a bit overboard.
Seems like both could be useful for facetime, if structured so?
Yeah, there is a case to use it for Facetime/streaming but meh. I doubt I'd want to hold it up except for "Hey, look at this area!" type of deal if I were to FaceTime.
Working at a golf course our pros have been looking into getting an ipad for the V1 software where you can do lessons and angles with lines and everything on it. A - point is that no camera means you have to transfer files from a camera over and that takes time. They want to be able to point shoot and go sit in the cart with the student and point out right there on screen what is going on. You can only say "dont bend your elbow" so much but seeing it on screen is a different experience. This is one of many reasons i could see a rear camera working out
Rene, are you actually okay with the exclusion of an SD slot? It would take up like no space in the guts of it. You're okay with forcing people to buy a $29 connection kit on the 2nd generation of hardware?
I know this site is supposed to be pro-Apple but there is no good way to spin the lack of SD. I agree on the resolution, there is a good reason for that right now but I don't get how not including simple hardware is acceptable.
You do realize that for the time being, there will be no iOS devices with expandable memory, so there is no reason to have a built-in port/slot, and thus the camera kit is going to be the only way to attach external stuff to it...
Depending on how much slimmer the device is, there may not have been room for it. Similar to how the iPhone 4 was packed so tightly that they had to use a smaller SIM card...
thunderbolt ... yummy
I guess we'll find out March 2nd.
Indeed we will my pink friend.
Dood makes me laugh!
Man I hope so. It has been too long in between updates.
It's strange, I feel like Im going to be let down.
Even though people say the 3G to 3GS bump was minimal, I completely disagree. After using the 3GS, the speed boost made the 3G nearly unusable. I don't think it will be the same with the iPad because it isn't my phone, it's not there to google a funny picture to show my friends real fast, it's what I use to type papers and edit spreadsheets with.
Sorry, but you're going to have to really impress me on this one to get me to upgrade. If it is worth the jump, I'll gladly give you my $600
If they use a dual-core cpu, upgrade the GPU, double the RAM and add a Facetime camera, those alone would add up to significant performance upgrades.
I doubt we'll see Retina iPad this time.
When the first iPad came out the features it had were almost equal to iOS 4 so maybe this iOS is going to be almost iOS 5 then again the OS could be ready
I can't wait for iPad 2.
Hopefully the screens are better as yesterday I went through 3 iPads before I got bored of the genius bar and went home. Today back with yesterdays 3rd replacement iPad because it has a white patch. The 1st one I returned had an expanded battery which caused the lcd to break, annoyed me less.
Should have kept it.
If they go no further than 512MB RAM and a minor processor bump, that cinches: one of the new Android tablets with twice the memory and a better CPU.
I really wanted Apple to impress me with iPad, but frankly it's a disappointing product from top to bottom. It's a nice version 1, but it leaves too many features on the table.
I just don't get tablets by anyone. My notebook is about the same size and is much more useful. Just my $0.02.
