Apple gives us iMovie for iPad

Apple's resident video software engineering genius Randy Ubillos was on hand at the iPad 2 event today to demo Apple's newly universal version iMovie with support for iPad. With precision editing, multitrack recording, new themes, AirPlay to Apple TV, and HD video sharing, it looks to really take advantage of both the big screen and the new cameras in iPad 2.

iMovie on the large iPad screen is full of features that make editing HD movies fast and fun. The Multi-Touch Precision Editor gives you the control to make the perfect cut. Edit multiple audio tracks with waveforms that let you see what you’re hearing. And discover many other features — from dynamic themes to direct HD sharing — that make iMovie on iPad an amazing experience.

$4.99, same price, double the device.

  1. Ben Ragunton says:

So what I would like to know is will this new software (iMovie and Garage Band) be compatible with the current iPads?

  2. Dionte says:

I thought I saw that the iphone4 version will work on the ipad2 too, is that true?

  3. iVenom says:

I feel like as a$$ buying the iPhone version I only used it like twice lol

  4. Jez says:

Well according to apple website this isn't compatible with 1st gen iPad which is a bummer !!!!!!!!

  5. Loz says:

So can you only edit clips taken with the iPad2? I don't see a lot of use for it if that's the case. What we need is iPhone 4 clips to sync across.

  6. Robert says:

I record a ton of video of my toddler daughter because my iPhone is always in my pocket.

An improved iMovie experience on the iPad doesn't help me if all of my content is on my iPhone.

Uploading the finished movie to YouTube, etc from the iPad is trivial. Does anybody know how to easily get all of the videos off of my iPhone (as well as my wife's) and then onto the iPad only finally to be archived onto a big fat hard-drive?

Please don't tell me it involves plugging each iPhone into the computer, sync'ing it to iTune there and then finally syncing again with the iPad.

    • Rod says:

yes my thoughts exactly Robert. There's tonnes of great innovation at Apple in hardware and software but in the pursuit of simplicity some basic stuff like what you describe is so convoluted !

    • Domingo says:

You can definitely do that! you can use the ipad camera connection kit. if you have an iphone 3gs or 4 you can hook it right into the ipad using this thing, and it will load your photos and movies directly. its great for my trips where i took all the video on my iphone 4 and at night i would load it right onto the ipad sans computer. iMovie will further enhance my experiance.

  7. JMWarren says:

I purchased the iPhone version 6 months ago when it came out, will this one be updated to the universal version or do I have to purchase the new version? I ask this as the Apple Keynote refers to iMovie as a universal app... ?

    • JEJORO says:

That's what I'm wondering too...? I hope it will upgrade for owners who already bought it for iPhone 4. Does anyone know the answer to this question? I guess we will know in a day or so when the USA gets the iPad2 first. 25th for me here in Canada...!!!
