Apple cancels iPad 3 supply orders for 2011

Last Friday TiPb heard that while Apple had considered releasing iPad 3 as early as this fall, it ultimately wasn't going to ship until the now traditional spring timeframe. Now the intermittently reliable Digitimes is reporting that Apple has cancelled orders with suppliers for iPad 3 parts for this fall.

Apple was originally set to launch its iPad 3 in the second half of 2011 with a supply volume of 1.5-2 million units in the third quarter and 5-6 million in the fourth quarter, but Apple's supply chain partners have recently discovered that the related figures have all already been deleted, the sources pointed out.

Further, we theorized part of the reason could be the costs and yield rates of the reported 2048x1536 Retina Display, which Digitimes

The sources believe that the yield rate of the 9.7-inch panel that feature resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 may be the major reason of the supply delay since such panels are mainly supplied by Japan-based Sharp with a high price and Apple's other supply partners Samsung Electronics and LG Display are both unable to reach a good yield.

They also report that backlighting and other issues with the Retina Display may also be playing a part. If Digitimes proves accurate, it'll be interesting to see if the other part of our tip pans out -- that iPhone 5 is set for October 7.

Isn't that what everyone has been saying since the beginning?

  2. TFausett says:

I don't think they were even planning on releasing the iPad 3 until 2012. I don't know where people are getting this information from, but to release another iPad this year is just not Apple. I never believed this story from the start and I'm glad to finally hear that there are no plans for it until next spring.

I don't get why everyone has a aneurysm over rumors of an iPad 3.

"OMFG Apple went off its normal cycle. I just bought this ipad why apple F-- you Apple."

Lets say they did come out with one? So what? Is it the end of the world. So people would be "pissed" (or would they? You can't talk for everyone Rene) and its not too diferent from someone buying an iPad in February.

People get this "information" just like every other rumor on the block.

Erm... Ok... So, lets start a rumor, with no real evidence... Then say it has been cancelled... these guys are OUT OF CONTROL! It didn't make any sense to what we have seen from Apple last years, but then again the iPhone was delayed... So i was looking up to a iPad 2 on steroids to make the purchase.

  8. Alan says:

so basically someone realised they were talking s*it and decided to change what they said so they don't look as stupid, and instead they state the obvious.

I am sure apple could come to market if they needed to. With the flood of tablets at the ipad 2 release they likely had plans to strike back if android started gaining. Android hasnt started gaining, there are no tablets on the market better than ipad 2 so why would apple release the 3 now? They have no problem being slightly behind the hardware curve so even if android tablets get refreshed before christmas apple can release the 3 by march as usual

Speculation, Speculation, Speculation. The demand for the iPad 2 is still out of control, and I don't think Apple ever planned on releasing an iPad 3 outside of their usual 12 month production cycle. I can understand an iPad 2 HD or iPad 2 Pro edition for the higher end tastes, but I just don't think it's in Apple's best interest to release a full iPad 3 update before next spring.

iPad 3 will be released in 2012...

  12. John says:

IMO I think Apple has stopes this due to them fact, me form one would be hell of a pissed if they released a new iPad after I spent £400 on the bloody new one :

To the people that said they won't release outside the 12 months, it hasn't stopped Apple from releasing a new MacBook Air only 6 month or less later, I would be sickened if I just spent £1000 on a computer I was told is the best, only for a couple of months down the line a new one comes out, I would have waited.

Apple have people where they want & this is the problem, ether they will act like sheep or they will backlash & Apple don't want the latter.
