More on iPad 3 coming this spring, difficulty in producing Retina Displays

The Wall Street Journal tells us that -- surprise, surprise -- Apple is working on a Retina Display iPad 3 for this fall!
The Cupertino, Calif., company has ordered key components such as display panels and chips for a new iPad it is aiming to launch in early 2012, said the people.
The next generation iPad is expected to feature a high resolution display - 2048 by 1536 compared with 1024 by 768 in the iPad 2 - and Apple's suppliers have already shipped small quantities of components for the sampling of the iPad 3. Suppliers said Apple has placed orders for a 9.7-inch screen device.
Digitimes' sources caution, however, that Retina Displays of that size are proving tricky to produce.
The sources noted that the iPad 3's resolution requirement of 2,048x1,536 pixels is also a challenge even for iPad panel regular suppliers such as LG Display (LGD) and Samsung Electronics. Apart from the two Korea makers, Japan's Sharp has als been selected to supply panels for the iPad 3, the sources said.
TiPb previously reported that, while Apple had considered moving iPad 3 up to a fall 2012, problems with Retina Display component costs and yield rates, Apple had moved iPad 3 back to it's traditional spring launch window.
If the displays continue to be so challenging to produce, does Apple stick with 1024x768 for generation 3, or do they move the launch further out into summer 2012?

They can move it into the summer, all we need is retina display!!!
I will 100% wait for an IPad with a retina display.
Me too
As for me I'm not waiting for it but I'd really like to try it

I bought an iPad 2 few weeks ago, so I hope new iPad won't be this year!
I don't get it: why would you hope it doesn't come out this year? It's not like your iPad 2 is going to suddenly stop working when Apple ships an iPad 3. Or, if you decide you really like the iPad 3 better, you can easily sell your iPad 2 (resale value on iPads is excellent) and put the proceeds towards an iPad 3.
Personally I have had an iPad 2 for just a few months, and I love it, but as far as I'm concerned, I hope the iPad 3 comes out as soon as humanly possible. I'd be thrilled if it shipped tomorrow.
so if an iPad 3 came out tommorow would that m,ean you have to go out and buy it and your ipad 2 will stop working?
Nonsense
As an ipad 2 owner, i (and probably many others) see no reason to buy an ipad 3 if it doesn't have retina.
if only the world revolved around you
Chris Gonzales, you rule man.
if only that made any sense...
I just p a i d $21.87 for an i P a d 2-64GB and my boyfriend loves his Panasonîc Lumîx GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS.I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://bit.ly/SHoPBid
And Apple has reportedly paid $1 billion to Sharp for those high-res displays. Supposedly it's just a pre-payment and not a factory co-ownership deal.
Seriously though. Apple likes to release iPhone and iPad several months apart. That's why, historically, iPad has been released in late Q1 and iPhone in late Q2 or early Q3. So each device can have 3 months or more on Apple's home page. To focus the media spotlight on the new device for as long as possible. For various reasons, some out of Apple's control, the iPhone 5 ship date had to be pushed into Q4 this year. That means no iPad 3 this year.
An iPhone 5 release in October followed by an iPad 3 release in November would put the releases uncomfortably close together. And it would mean that any delays in production of iPad 3 could push the ship date into or past the holiday season. Better to sell the current iPad 2 that has been building mindshare for most of the year.
The "Retina Display" yield rate issues are all part of the game when pushing the technology envelope. Apple lost sales when iPad 1 stock ran out at launch. And again when iPad 2 stock ran out at launch. The only way to avoid that is to pipeline production. To ramp up component production and iPad assembly to make sure production can meet demand on launch. And that means working out production problems early in the release cycle.
I hope they push it back into summer release only because it would allow them to breathe and gather more resources for the launch. It solves two problems by allowing them to stock pile for the high demand of retina displays and move the launch closer to the holiday season without having to step on the iPhone's toes.
If it was up to me, and I'm sure many would disagree, the best schedule would be as follows:
Spring: iPhone Release (Who wouldn't love to kick off the new year with an amazingly brand new iPhone???) Summer: iPad/MacBook Releases (Another thing to add to the back-to-school supplies list.) Fall: iPod Releases (For those who really want to surprise their loved ones for the holidays.)
Now, I'm not a pro at logistics and event management so if any part of this schedule is impossible, I would love to know why!
I'm very happy with my iPad 2, but I wouldn't mind seeing the next model come out in the spring. Yes, I know my iPad will still be fine, but just from a psychological stand point, it will feel better if a year goes by with my current iPad.
My intention though are not to run out and buy an iPad 3 anyway next year. Better display or not... that's just a bit ridiculous. Now, in 2013, when there is an iPad 4.... that's a different story.
(First iPad 4 stories...about two seconds after the iPad 3 is announced.)
Maybe 2 minutes.
Hey, this was new to me. Thanks for sharing this helpful information!
