Alleged iPhone 5 screen protector shows a larger screen and home button

Unwire.HK has uncovered a few pictures today that are supposedly from a screen protector for the upcoming iPhone 5. The screen protector, if real, shows an elongated opening for the home button as well as a much larger screen size for the new iPhone model compared to the current iPhone 4.

We have seen quite a few case leaks recently which supposedly showed the rear of the iPhone 5 and a few months back there was an alleged iPhone 5 case which does appear to match up with this screen protector. It also showed an elongated opening for the home button which may be for a capacitive touch area rather than a physical button.

The screen size also appears to be larger when compared with an iPhone 4. It is believed however that all of these case and screen protector leaks are based on one particular source of design information; so they may all be wrong or of course, they may all be right. Until Apple announces the iPhone 5, we will just have to wait and see!

UPDATE: This post was originally published with the watermarks removed from the original images. That's simply not how TiPb does business. We'll figure out how it happened and make sure it doesn't happen again. Our apologies to Unwire.hk, we deeply regret the error. (Thanks to stupidapplerumors.com for the head's up!)

  1. if the home button is really a rectangle samsung should sue for it looking too much like the galaxy s

  2. Anonymous says:

    So, no front facing camera?

Just saying because the ear speaker opening is longer than the iPhone 4, so could open to include the camera area, but, again with the iPhone 4, the camera is wider than the opening for the speaker.

    • Marco Laure says:

You might be right about this assumption on the receiver opening. As you can see, it is off-centered towards the left where the front-facing camera will be located.... Just sayin :-)

    • Shrike says:

Some screen protectors are better than others. ;) Do you really need a hole cut for the front cam? I believe there are several iPhone 4 glass protector products that cover both the front and back cams. So who knows.

  3. Anonymous says:

clearly fake , unless they decided to put the protector over the front camera

  4. Aworldisfalling says:

The idea of a capacitive home button doesn't sit well with me. For one if your iPhone freezes and you need to soft reset a capacitive button may not recognize the touch. Or what about the accidental touch oops hit home now I gotta reopen the app again. When I play games in landscape my thumb rests on the home button. I hope they don't put a capacitive home button I personally would rather have a physical button.

  5. Badinage says:

No story really As Apple would never give any heads up about their next iPhone to a company making screen protectors.

  6. I have an iphone 4 and the screen protector uses the same opening for the speaker and camera. just saying....

  7. B. Braun says:

iPhone hey stupid, this is a Samsung Galaxy S II screen protector!

    • Guest1985 says:

I was thinking the same. it does look similar to a galaxy s 2 screen. but the button home button on a galaxy s 2 isnt that big. so we will see how it goes.

  8. Shrike says:

Man, if this mythical larger screen iPhone device doesn't ship, I'd love to hear the story on how this came about. Was it Apple misinformation to burn accessory makers? To find a leak?

  9. Dantv says:

The entire Android phone/ecosystem is a COPY of the iPhone. Google jumped the shark when they decided to go into the phone business.

  10. Anonymous says:

This ought to be interesting if this is true and see how samsung handles this since it will clearly be a copy of the sgs2 which apple likes to sue over.

  11. Anonymous says:

Capacitive touch area my ass. You couldn't even hold the thing to play games! Let's hope not.

  12. Jeff Dunn says:

If it is that big, it will probably be a fingerprint reader or something. I doubt Apple would make that huge of a hardware jump if it wasn't for a good reason.

  13. Daniel says:

If it's a capacitive area, then why the hole? Doesn't make sense. The screen is capacitive as well and works fine with the protector, so a "touch" home button shouldn't need no holes. Nobody else noticed this?
