iPhone 5 going dual-core, 1GB of RAM, with advanced Assistant feature?
Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac has posted a great write-up on what his usually very good sources have told him we can expect in the upcoming iPhone 4S/iPhone 5 hardware and software. In short:
- Apple A5 dual-core SoC (like iPad 2)
- 1GB of RAM
- 8MP rear camera, backlit sensor
- Qualcomm GSM/CDMA Dual-Band radio
- Siri-based Assistant that replaces the old, limited Voice Control, and tied into Wolfram Alpha and Find my Friend
- Nuance-based Dictation for voice-to-text
One of the big questions remains whether it will be in the same/similar iPhone 4 casing or in a redesigned, bigger screen, all new casing. TiPb has independently heard that we shouldn't get our hopes up for a redesign this year, but with Apple we won't know for sure until we see it.
Assistant sounds like the killer feature for iPhone 4S/iPhone 5, with the ability to handle natural voice input and hold a conversation to parse complex tasks like setting up appointments, informing invitees, finding friends, etc. (Unfortunately, it still can't actualize "Tea. Early Grey. Hot." but it's getting close...)
Check out Mark's complete write up for a lot more details, linked below.

Sounds disappointing if there is no body redesign or bigger screen.
I have no problem with the same design. iPHone looks awesome like it is, but... I want a bigger screen.
Captain Picard drank Earl Grey early.
If that's all the update from iPhone 4 is minimal and I might skip this version
That sounds nice.
Yes, very nice. Like Cpt. Picard's 'Earl Grey'. Much nicer than the rarely tasted 'Early Grey'. Mark in Cali
And the stock price shows. Down $9.39 this morning. That's $23 down in a week.
Heres a cool place for Apple freaks : http://j.mp/ifgGhD
Nice on the RAM and chip but I thought Apple didn't talk about Ram. Just wondering about the validity of the post.
I am drooling over the memory. One of my biggest complaints about the iPhone 4 is that it cannot keep more than 1 or 2 high-quality websites in memory and it usually forces reloads when switching between them. 1GB is double what the iPhone 4 has and will help immensely (hopefully). Its possible that the new features of iOS will take up the memory too though - hope not.
I suppose this would be a good way to determine if people actually -want- to talk to their phones instead of tapping on them. I'm not so sure.
I would love to be "failing" with the kind of success Apple is having. $70+ billion in the bank...sounds like an EPIC FAIL.
Please Lord...let my businesses fail, by this measure.
I would much rather have an Android like Chris the troll likes. I need android that crashes, runs slower, and is infected with viruses. Android central is right around the corner douche.
I have a Droid Incredible 2 that has not crashed, is faster than an iPhone4, and not even close to having a virus. Get facts straight before you post.
Thats cool your droid inc 2 is what you call "faster" than an iPhone 4 and it should be. Since the the iPhone has been out over a year and the inc 2 has only been out a few months
@David Porter See that's the problem with Baalpredator making blanket statements. It starts these comparisons and corrections for incorrect statements but the context is off [in this case, release dates].
gotta love when people come on here and say their android devices never crash. i work for vzw and ive seen more dinc 2s come back in with issues than any other newly released android device. yeah the iphone is not perfect but it is dam close. i have had 2 droid devices and both were rooted with all the carrier and manufacturer bloatware removed running some nice roms and guess what? still had the occasional hiccup, freeze up and battery pull.. android is a great os and you can do a lot as far as customizing your devices and the free apps are great but i love the reliability and simplicity that the iphone brings. but thats me. But anyone who has ever owned an android device will tell you that it will have its hiccups more than not. so please with the "MY droid has NEVER crashed".. i calll your bullshit. thanks
Yep and an iPhone is like an impenetrable vault that no hacker on Earth could breach...... Just ask Scarlett Johansson.
Disappointed would really like the assistant feature on the iphone 4
Not even close. Trying to do any of these voice tasks in public will be completely obnoxious, however.
Not true. Voice actions on Android in public or riding in my truck w/ music playing [not blasting but at a moderate level] works perfectly fine.
He's not talking about it actually working.
At any rate you seem to be the exception and not the rule. This sort of feature has been around for ever. I can honestly say I haven't seen 1 person ever use voice commands. Yeah it's cool to say it can do it, but it's not something people actually use.
@ slanted00 I hear you.
I use it often when I'm unable to type but not much else.
What are you talking about? The iPhone 4 has 512MB.
No matter what it has, it's still faster than Android.
You said "Assistant sounds like the killer feature for iPhone 4S/iPhone 5", but...isn't that a feature of iOS 5 that you'll be able to get on the current iPhone? So...it's not much of a selling point for the new hardware if you can just update the OS on your current phone...right?
Yeah... doesn't make sense reading Rene's snippet but if you read the source article, the guy says that "Assistant" will only be available on the new iPhone(s).
Ahhh that's what I get for being lazy and not reading from the source haha. Thanks for clearing that up (though I'm pretty disappointed about that...)
if there is no bigger screen then why would anyone upgrade from an iphone 4. That'll be a deal breaker for me. Under the hood specs matter, but c'mon. Its time for 4"
People seem to forget that the iphone 4 is 15 months old, why do you compare specs with current smartphones instead of what it was released with? Despite that it still runs better than almost any Android phone...not to mention the ip4 HAS 512mb RAM...which was very competitive when it was released. The original Galaxy S phones only had 340mb of usable RAM.
Apple has a LONG way to go before their next innovation reads anyone's mind. They have a lot more lawsuits to file and maybe a few more lackluster phones to release in the meantime.
You can put 2GB on Android and iOS with 512MB will still be faster and lag free.
I just had a vision. iPhone 5 with larger screen but it'll be an odd size like 3.901" or 4.125" or similar. That will allow for iOS 5 to equally stretch out current apps to fit the larger screen. Similar to how non retina apps worked on the iPhone 4. Thereby reducing fragmentation. Bet!
Lmao Chris is mad because he doesn't have a business that has "failed" like Apple's business. /s Do not be made because Apple is making more money than everyone and their mothers. xD
ill be understanding but upset if the iPhone 4 doesn't get the assistant feature. also.. its time for a 4 inch screen i'd rather have 5 tho lol
