TiPb Asks: What do you want in iOS 5.1?

If you're anything like me, now that you've had iOS 5 to play around with for a while, you're probably already starting to wonder what Apple might have in store for us for iOS 5.1? I'm not talking about an iOS 5.0.1 bug fix update, mind you, but about a 5.1 minor feature enhancement. You know, the kind of iOS x.1 we used to get with the new iPod touch in September back when the iPhone came out in June with iOS x.0.
This year iOS 5 only came out in October so I don't expect iOS 5.1 until January (iPad 3 feels like an iOS 5.2 update.) We haven't even gotten a beta yet, so it won't be any time soon at least. But when it does come, what do you want to see in it?
- iPhone OS 3.1](http://www.imore.com/2009/09/09/iphone-31-software-walkthrough/) got non-destructive video trimming, Genius for Apps, and a few other, minor tweaks.
- iPhone OS 2.1 got Genius Playlists and a few other, minor tweaks.
- iPhone OS 1.1 got the iTunes (then Wi-Fi) Music Store
So... Genius for iBooks it is? I hope that's not all. I hope we get the ability to delete individual pictures from Photo Stream and to disable the fast camera access bypass. Siri getting the ability to launch apps would be sweet as well, as would giving Siri the ability to read more than just SMS/iMessages. Speaking of which, being able to tell iMessage not to send if it's going to fall back on SMS would be nice when chatting with people in other countries. And I'd still like them to stop kicking us out of the App Store every time we make a purchase...
But we need to be realistic -- we won't get huge things like BiteSMS-style interactive notifications, a Theme Store, or anything else in a x.1 update, but we'll hopefully get just a few more rough edges shaved off.
What are the top things you want Apple to give you in iOS 5.1?

I'd like the ability to not have the screen turn on automatically with lock screen items
iOS5 already does this if you have the notification set to Lockscreen. It turns on the screen with every notification that comes in that's set to Lockscreen On in it's settings. Is this what you're talking about?
How about a working music player. Maybe go back to pre ios5
What's wrong with the music player? Works just fine for me.
For me also things that have been mentioned before here plus some other: -notification center in lock screen -set number of agenda days ahead to be displayed in nc -wifi / bluetooth switch button in lock screen / nc -change name of applications -update notifications in background, eg if i read facebook message on pc i want the notification to go away on iphone / ipad etc -notifications in status bar -contact pictures in contacts app -profiles (eg. calls only, silent, medium, loud etc) -set notification sounds of 3rd party apps (or have them just vibrate, independent of sounds for mail / messages / calls) -quick settings for brightness on iphone (like for ipad) -sync notes with exchange
Ok that's a whole lot .. but it would make iPhone near perfect for me. Add a notification LED to iPhone 5 and voila .. perfection
"-quick settings for brightness on iphone (like for ipad)" Remind me again why we have a software and a hardware option for changing the volume? This is the biggest oversight in my book...
Nooooo... this is an accessibility issue. For different people one method is easier than the other, and for me it depends what I'm doing. I would hate to see one option taken away.
I WANT THE ADDRESS BAR IN SAFARI TO GO AWAY!
I would like notifications to work correctly. I have notifications completely turned off in apps that still deliver banner notifications.
I'd also like to be able to print. An Airprint workaround that previously worked with iOS 4 does not work with iOS 5. Why would Apple defeat this workaround except to be mean? Or maybe HP kicks back to them for the few printers that currently work with Airprint.
This. My non-techie girlfriend is VERY upset she can no longer print.
(previously i used a workaround to share my Dell color laser ... Dell in general appears SILENT on AirPrint support, which sucks).
I'd go for the fast camera disablement myself. I would also like the iPad smart cover bug fixed and Siri/location based reminders brought to the iPad as well.
I'm hoping being able to delete some photo stream pics. When I how off how fast the 4S camera is I don't need 10-20 photos of rapid blurred photos on the stream haha.
I had no idea who wrote this article until I saw the part about being kicked out of the app store after each purchase and I knew it must've be Georgia. I hate that too!
Siri 1.0 with more and deeper integration into apps (open applications, more granularity with calendar/reminders, etc), access to more databases (wikipedia, sports scores, news, etc) and of course better and better natural language processing.
Don't have the screen light up when you get a text...and dont have the phone beep when you get a text while on a call. Reduce banner time for notification - they hang forever. While were at it. Can we chose if the banner was at the top or bottom?
that banner is definitely annoying when it just sits there and I want to go 'back' and it's still blocking the 'back' button. Have to hit just under and hope I don't get into the new notification of whatever it may be. Def. like to see these features fixed.
fyi, you can swipe left to get rid of it.
iCloud to have better multiple-account capabilities or support (or something that would make it actually work for a family with multiple devices).

I think it already does a good job. It's just not exactly intuitive this is how you set it up. http://www.macworld.com/article/163006/2011/10/howtoconfigureicloudifyoushareanapple_id.html
I would really like to be able to set the number of days in advance a calendar appointment is displayed in notifications.

Is the hardware in iPad/iPad2 capable of running Siri? That would be major.

Card multitasking. Android, Palm, and MS got it. Your "advanced approach to multitasking" works OK-ish, but the implementation is crap. I can't stand holding the app icon then trying to hit that tiny (-)! Bezel swipe support (like the NC) for the switcher would be nice. /rant.
Anyway, i think third-party widgets (non-JB) will be nice. Ability to delete from Photo Library. (not camera roll)

Third party app compatibility with Siri.
Third party app compatibility with Siri.
Three wishes: 1. The ability to turn off all notifications with one button 2. A dedicated icon for switching Wifi on/off 3. A dedicated icon for switching Bluetooth on/off.

What he said and iCloud integration to Gmail/Contacts for my BB. I have to carry two phones...
Add on adjusting brightness. It's insane you have to go through multiple menus to adjust things when you go out into the sun (autobrightness doesn't really work that great).
Also available in Android...
Troll.
Get an Android phone then.
Lag, Malware, and a memory leak are also available on Android. Fortunately they are not available on iPhone, otherwise, Apple would sell more phones to teenagers. LOL!!!
I want the ability to just ask Siri to turn my wi-fi on and off.
Or the same with Bluetooth. (Pain in my butt!)
AGREE with 1. & 2. My #3 is a bug fix for my 3GS. It crashes now and then and runs a little slowly. I like iOS5 very much except for what I had already stated.
A reply to another comment: There's no way SIRI can run on a 3GS. Just not enough processing power. That's ok. I'll up grade to a 4S when possible.
Why not??? My 3GS is quicker than my bestfriend's Nexus SII
Why not??? My 3GS is quicker than my bestfriend's Nexus SII
not good telling fibs
He must have very badly tuned his Nexus S for that to happen... Exactly the contrary here...
Troll.
He didn't have to badly tune his Nexus S. Gingerbread took care of that for him.

@Nick: Listen to MBWeekly #269 Andy Ihnatko ... that's where I got it from.
So basically you want Android on your iPhone?
Funny when Steve was saying that Android is a copy of iOS
It is. All we want is a few icons and switches Android came up with after copying the whole concept of a touchscreen smartphone that uses your finger as a stylus, zooms with multytouch and has a desktop class web browser.
I would not put Android on my iPhone even if I could, after owning devices with all major mobile OS's out there (including Android) I realized that IOS is so far the best, granted it could still use a few extra things from Android and webOS but wanting a wifi switch doesn't mean I want Android.
Try to remember how smartphones were before the iPhone and how they are now, and you'll figure out who copied who.
Jailbreak and install SBSettings. All of these toggles are in my notification center.
I would like the deleting pic from photo stream as well in addition to better photo albums where photos will only store in the album and not in camera roll as well as password protected albums. I would also like the ability to clear out notifications from the lock screen w/o always have to unlock my phone. I also would like to have the date on the top bar (where the network and battery icons are) like it is when jailbroken. I never knew how much I would miss that. As well as maybe doing live weather, clock, and calender app icons (wishful thinking-i know).
Anyone know where Apple does get their ideas/project request for doing system updates and bug fixes? Any chance they frequent the site and will see our request!?!?
Bluetooth and a2dp fixes and more battery optimizing.
Just one request: bring back the option to disable all notifications with just one switch.
i would really like to see iMessage as its own app. where we can add ppl and make status'. dont make me say it... make it like bbm but better. ooops i said it.
I like the integration into one app. I'd like the iPod app back to one, too.
I'd never use it if it was another app, would have to much hassle. That would be a stupid idea.
Exactly!!!! I want iMessage to be a separate app!!
Bug fix plus Siri to become more advance and also for it to work properly in the uk. Better features for the camera
Third party notification center widgets would be nice.
Hoping for that two, but I get the feeling that would be a 5.3 update earliest or iOS 6 update
Android here we go
Troll.
How about multiple email account signature support?! That shit is way overdue!
Wifi toggle switch and better battery life.
1) Improved battery life (fix some bugs) 2) Either add videos to photo stream, or make photos and videos sync over wifi automatically 3) Siri is great, but I can't wait until she can do even more!
You can already tell imessages to not fall back on SMS.
Improved battery + siri for us 4 users. iPhone 4 can handle it so hopefully it will be out of beta and available for i4
more option in iCloud. Like deleting photos in photo stream. updating pics and albums from my ipad / iphone to my mac.
A FULLY FUNCTIONAL (including voice navigation) google maps. Support for (time/location based) profiles (work, home, outdoors, etc). That would hit the spot for me...!
Ability to choose toggles for the Notification Centre
i.e. WIFI, BT, GPS etc
1) Access notification center from lock screen 2) Quick reply and compose for text messages, emails and twitter. 3) Facebook integration
that's all i want, but facebook integration, all i would would want is to post on facebook, from apps like i do on twitter, i dont want them to know my contacts.
Give option to turn off the lockscreen.
Give option to turn off the lockscreen.
Siri to other apple devices, iPhone 3GS
I would like the ability to have a button that would close all open apps.
The ability to choose which camera apps link with fast camera access... I would love to be able to link it to Camera+
The ability to choose which camera apps link with fast camera access... I would love to be able to link it to Camera+
The ability to move pictures from the camera roll to user specified folders without them being duplicated across folders.
The ability to delete the camera roll picture and keep the copied picture in another folder.
The ability to delete photos/videos from the phone that were synced from Itunes.
Untethered jailbreak
We were told that IOS 5 would be independence from the computer. However, if we want to create custom repeats for appointments, we still have to use our computer to do it. I would like the calendar app to have the option to create custom repeats.
I would like to have some additional Siri features. For example, I would like to be able to say "Siri, turn my Wi-Fi off" when I don't want wi-fi to drain my battery, and then say "Siri, turn on my Wi-Fi" for when I want to quickly turn it back on again. Same could go with many other features, like location services, etc.
I would also like to use Siri to better create notes or shopping lists. I would love to be able to say "Siri, add some extra small condoms to my shopping list", and have her add it to the list she helped me create previously. Or at least be able to interact with notes or reminders in an more involved and intuitive way.
I want to be able to have Siri interact with certain apps, like the camera for example. I could say, "Take a picture every 10 seconds for 10 minutes". Or "Siri, once the camera is stable, wait for 10 seconds and snap a picture".
Any of this should definitely be doable.
3G Facetime!! Also Facebook Integration like Twitter widgets/settings in notifications.
Only thing is I am expecting none of this till iOS 6 which will be beta testing in March for June release of iPhone (LTE)
Siri on iPhone 4/iPod touch 3 & 4/Maybe iPad 1, Def iPad 2.
And 3GS
And 3GS
just upgrade to the 4s....fuck the 3GS
And 3GS
And 3GS
And 3GS
imessage online offline status. so we could know if the one we are talking to is online since imessage needs to connect to internet. imessage is some king of useless if online offline will not be placed.
I WOULD LIKE IPHONE 4 4.3.3 COMPARABLE BATTERY LIFE WITH MY 4S IN IOS5.1 ...
"Close all" background app button
Working push email
1) All notifications on/off in one switch, like in 4.x.
2) iMessage work by user, not by device. People should not have to send to Dev's phone to hit my phone or Dev's email to get my iPad...they should just send to Dev, and it should get to both places. (Bonus points if the conversations can be archived/viewable from both places, a la Google Voice)
iMessage already works that way. I have an iPhone and iPad on my desk and they both beep when I get an iMessage. Make sure to set your iMessage "caller id" to your email address.
multi-touch swipe from app to app
It already does this, doesn't it? On the iPad, at least.
Face unlock Improved gmail Palm pre like multita...,
Oh this is ios.
In that case I would like Face unlock Improved Email (native gmail) And palm pre like multitasking.
Pipe dreams I know.
Face unlock is a fail because people could just hold up a picture and get into your phone its unsafe
1.) Multiple Mail signatures (like Mail Enhancer). 2.) Syncing of iOS iWork apps with Mac iWork apps. 3.) A flashlight button on the lockscreen.
To be allowed to disable alerts on shared calendars. This is very important to me
FaceTime 3g
It was in the beta but Verizon most like wouldn't budge on wanting to restrict the feature to iPhone users with grandfathered unlimited data plans. Making a tiered iPhone data plan only feature.
http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/28/facetime-3g-for-verizon-iphone-may-be-restricted-to-tiered-data-plans/
I want templates in calendar
I want to be able to install/update apps without being kicked back to the home screen already. Wasn't that supposed to be a feature in 5?
I also want a better photostream. Specifically a separate folder that I can import pictures from my default photo album into.
Lastly, let me disable stock apps in settings. I want to remove calculator, stocks and the god awful newsstand crap.
Call black list Every 50$ phone is capable of blocking phone numbers for sms or calls. iPhone not.
Solve battery problems
1) Let me delete the 50 crappy pictures for every one good one that goes into my photostream. 2) Let me turn on Bluetooth without drilling down several layers like I'm on a Windows Mobile 5.0 device. 3) Let me have Siri do much more. Play Booty City on Slacker Radio...Send Whatsapp to Jan...Open _____ App...
Keep the good one in Camera roll
Turn off photo stream in settings
go to iCloud.com and delete photo stream
Wow, because that's much more convenient than the ability to just delete it from the Photos app.
Did I say it was convenient? No, I was just sharing info incase people or you wanted something fucking deleted from your photo stream.
how about something simple ... id like to see stock %s in the notification widget ... not $s
Siri available on the iPhone 4
I want something simple: for Pages to export to dropbox. iCloud docs is great for iOS, but a pain to manage with my macbook. I hope someone at Apple will get over Jobs being peeved that dropbox wouldn't be bought out.
How about fixing the macro and focusing problems on iPhone 4S
AUTO ANSWER!! My kids have LG Clamshell phones with that feature. Geez Apple step into the new age..
I could have sworn my 3G S had a setting to slide to answer. Instead of having to slide to unlock than hit answer, just slide to answer. Never really bothered to mess with it on iOS 4
My 4S does answer when I unlock/slide. I am looking to change this.
I would like to see the battery percentage (if set to off) turn on when the battery is 20% and below and when charging.
Genious for ibooks?? WORST idea ever... so pointless
The various "stores" are getting long in the tooth. They need to be consolidated into one app although it is okay for multiple apps to access the stores. For example, there is one app to access the App Store. Then there is another app to access iTunes Music/Movies. Then there is the iBook app to access the Bookstore. All of these stores need to be consolidated into one.
A more cleaner interface and simpler one for making the right settings so that "Find iPhone" feature cannot be turned off without a password. Right now, there are multiple settings one has to turn off and in various panels in the Settings app to do that. That's very confusing. If you set the wrong settings, someone who steals your iOS device can very quickly disable the Find iPhone feature or remove accounts and thus you can no longer find your iOS device remotely.
iPad should come with a non-removable Weather app, Clock app. All iOS devices that can use Find iPhone app should come with a non-removable Find iPhone app.
iPad should have the ability to display weather and stock ticker in the notification banner.
Notification banner should be open to allowing different apps post statuses like the Weather and Stock app does.
Folder icons need to be redesigned, though I'm not sure how. Right now, folder icons look ugly and confusing.
Going to the App Store to update apps results always in the program quitting in order to show where on the main screen the apps are updating. This is annoying when there are multiple items I want to update but not all at once, or I want to continue browsing the app store while an update is happening.
Each item in the notification centre should be deletable. Right now, the ability is to only delete a set of notifications from an app instead of individual notifications. Sometimes I like to keep a notification "alive" as a way to remind me when I check again.
How come the Reminder app is a separate app but when we logon to iCloud.com, the Reminder features is under calendar? This is very confusing. Apple needs to pick one or the other. If they want reminders to be part of the calendar, then on the iOS, the Reminder should NOT be a separate app and should be part of the Calendar app. If they want the Reminder app to be separate from Calendar app, then on iCloud.com Reminders should have its own icon separate from Calendar icon.
These are just a few but if I were employed by Apple, I'd have a lot more to critique. Maybe they should hire me as a QA person
Freaking Flash already!!!!
Custom lockscreen, custom home screen, quick settings in the notification center, and Siri in my friggin brand new 3GS!
Facebook integration. Delete pics from photostream. Triple click home button for favorites.
I'd really like to see the changes mentioned above -- plus more: Change how the notfications bar looks (background, push content down, etc..), ability to hide newsstand, make the weather icon dynamic for crying out loud!*!
More access to the Bluetooth stack to allow me to control which apps use a2dp, handsfree etc alá what is availaBle via JB.
Siri access to more apps especially maps for non-US users.
I'd love two small features:
When I'm in a meeting, automatically turn my phone ringer off. When the meeting time is over, turn it back on
Location-based WiFi. When I get to the office, turn WiFi on. When I leave the office, turn it off. When I get home, turn it back on again. I think this feature alone would boost usage of FaceTime
I would want the Alerts from the Calender to automatically go to the Reminders list. Probably a big wish and I'm sure it'll never happen. Always seems that what some of the best ideas never make it to the phone. Oh, and the ability to make the notifications screen be the screen that the phone opens to. And a button on the home screen for Bluetooth on/off. Siri on a iPhone 4, and a close all open apps button. I could go on and on....
Siri on all iOS 5 devices and "sound profiles" (think BlackBerry sound profiles and jailbreak app "MyProfiles") would satisfy me but probably will never happen
contact search from keypad
Bug fixes for volume and alarm clock
Siri on my iPad 2. Ability to delete individual pics in photo stream would be nice too.And a male Siri voice. What else is there, what will 6.0 have.
Maps update. Both android and Windows's now have turn by turn. Its our turn.
Group Contacts emailing. And send emails using a different smtp server that I choose
just to make my iphone more my own customize just a more of personalizing
I'd like to see the ability to see a 'delete all' function added for SMS/iMessages. Kind of pitiful that "the most advanced iPhone yet" can't do this but all the "crappy" Androids/Blackberries/Dumbphones can.
I'd like the ability to read attachments within Calendar appointments - that we were promised in ios5 but isn't there.
I want to be able to make a keyboard shortcut with one character. For example, I want u to expand to you and r to expand to are. Currently shortcuts must be at least two characters.
The ability to delete song from the iPhone .
Native print to PDF Siri control of settings Video mirror over analog
I don't understand why reminders is a completely seperate app from the calendar. I would like to see those merged. They are essentially the same thing anyway.
Multi-touch gesture like ios 4.3.3
A shortcut icon on top of the screen for wifi / 3G / bluetooth / brightness. Like the pop down menu.
Photo stream delete, Siri settings control, more amusing Siri sayings to make us laugh, and fix my document sync.
1: Ability to disable which apps could run in the background. 2: Ability to reply to a text message within the Notification Center. 3: Adjust Brightness, Airplane Mode, Wifi, etc...within Notification Center. 4: Post to Twitter and/or Facebook via Notification Center.
Ability to turn of multitasking apps with one button
Ability to control music player from the notification center
When pulling up the app switcher tray, swiping to the far left... replace volume with BRIGHTNESS.
Like the iPad? It has both...
Print to PDF, so I can store web-generated receipts. And while they're at it an Apple-sanctioned way to print via a networked Mac to any printer.
Unnecessary need for outside connection for internal command. Come on. Sending text message should be blindly fast using Siri and should NOT rely on connecting to Siri server
Please separate function that needs Siri server vs those it should come straight from iPhone itself
