Sprint claims iPhone users consume much less data than other platforms
Speaking during an earnings call on Wednesday, Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse, not only claimed that iPhone 4S has exceeded all of their expectations, but that iPhones on the Sprint network used much less network resources than users of other smartphone platforms. This is one of the main reasons that Sprint decided to add the iPhone to its portfolio of handsets.
“There is a misperception that our launch of the iPhone will increase the load on Sprint’s 3G network and require us to spend more 3G capital,” Hesse said. “The reverse is true. iPhone users are expected to use significantly less 3G than the typical user of a dual-mode 3G, 4G device. Even adjusting for more total new customers being added to the network, we believe they will put less load on our 3G network than they would have if we did not carry the iPhone.”
A lot of chatter suggests that the iPhone is a very data efficient device and that is why Sprint expects to see this reduction in data consumption. While I wouldn’t necessarily argue with that point, it is much more likely to be Apple’s management of data. Most, if not all data intensive tasks on the iPhone have to be performed over Wi-Fi rather than 3G. Android does not have any of these restrictions; so it would follow that it could potentially consume much more mobile data than the iPhone.

I call BS.
I call BS on paying a $10 "premium data" fee for non-premium 3G network speed. I called BS on that back when my EVO could only get spotty WiMax coverage in the Atlanta area. Maybe we should organize an "occupation of a City park" on that issue? LOL!!!
I call BS.
Lower consumption not due to user/apple efficiency but rather how Sprint's TERRIBLE network speeds is a pure turn off and greatly discourages iPhone usage...Going back to AT&T.

Back to AT&T for what spotty to no coverage?
I have good service, never any spotty or no coverage. I live in Massachusetts.
I had spotty coverage with AT&T in Atlanta on both voice and Data. That pushed me to Sprint, where I had great voice and data coverage on the EVO and the iPhone.
Well Atlanta is pretty much the best city for Sprint. Try going anywhere outside of a major metropolitan area and see how it compares.
Never had spotty coverage with AT&T or dropped calls (in LA). But still, I'd take spotty but effective over not spotty and near worthless any day. If u are just concerned about voice coverage then im afrad that u have greatly underestimated the capacity of your device. You'd be better off with a Nokia 3310..I'm sure Sprint will get there one day, but I didn't choose to invest in "The Maybe One Day Network"
By LA, I'll assume you're talking about Louisiana - and not Los Angeles. AT&T service in the LA area SUCKS! IT'S AWFUL! Gaah!
Actually I do mean Los Angeles lol! Come down from the Valley! It's good anywhere DT-Hollywood-MidWilshire-Santa Monica etc.
I have Sprint, and it may not be as fast as others, i don't care. the iPhone 4S is the tastes phone I have ever had on Sprint, so whatever, and I use wi-fi more because it is campus wide and in my apt so its stronger signal since Im in a solid cement and brick building.
Agreeing with "Sprint is wack." I have Sprint, and their 3G is embarrassing. Their 4G is eh. Our city doesn't even have 4G. I only use Sprint data when I have to. But I never play videos on them or anything. They'd never load lol
I dream of a world with ubiquitous wifi so the carriers can be done away with once and for all.
amen!
They are smoking crack .. wait a minute they do use less, cause the sprint network is ultra SLOW!!!!
Wait till LTE makes it to Sprint in 2013. The 6 Cities it arrives in will be the slowest LTE network too.

There's no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 so they aren't seeing the true consumption of iPhone users.
Well technically Apple users use less data because while downloading apps if an app is too big the iPhone will have you switch to wifi... Android users are not forced to do this, not to mention the Android will use a 100mb to 200mb of data if you don't even touch the phone because of its auto update features.
And there ya have it. It's the Android users sucking down all the data that's slowing the network down. Can we get them all on WiMax with phones that can't get 3G?
Sprint full of Crap. He's right about IPhone using less DATA, because there's no DATA to use. I couldn't be happier that I returned my iPhone 4s back to sprint. I couldn't even use Siri for most of the time. Web page took close to 2 minutes to open on sprint mediocre network. 0.89 DL 0.38 UL these r my top speed on sprint. My worst was 0.04 DL and 0.02 UL, and I'm talking mbps. AT&T smoke sprint anyday.
You are clearly in a bad reception area. Your statement does not include everyone. For example, I have never experienced slow data speeds and my web pages open almost instaneous and that is without using wifi. So you sir need to take your negative attitude to another forum. Go back to AT&T because where you live obviously doesn't have very good sprint coverage. Every persons miles may vary. No network is perfect everywhere.
Wow, have you read the comments here? He is not the only one complaining about Sprint data speeds. In fact, only about 2 people have said theirs is working adequately. Almost everyone on here is complaining and giving specific download and upload speeds. I have been a Sprint customer for about 10 years and have never had data speed problems like this. If I am off wi-fi, the highest download speed I have tested was .3Mbps. This is not in one location. I have been in Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, New York, and Milwaukee all in the last week. Usually I am downloading at speeds close to .1 Mbps. You can't tell me I was always in bad reception areas. I have always had 3-4 bars. There is a problem and Sprint better deal w/it or like the poster you berated, I and my family will be leaving Sprint for sure.
I have 4-6 bars almost everywhere in Austin. I tested recently with 6 bars (full reception) 3g and got 300kbps down, 350 up. Tested 4g with 2 out of 3 bars and got 500kbps down, 1500kbps up. Meanwhile in Leander my friend is getting 12258kbps with LTE on at&t. not sure what my $10 "premium data" is for...
Sprint needs to stop it, this is not a good look.
Well that would be because there is practically no data to download. I can't understand how they are getting away with this slow data and it seems there doing nothing to fix it. I have a SG2 but man all the speedtest and everything that I have seen its painfully slow.
This statement doesn't say the iPhone uses less data. They are saying they predict it will use less data. They are betting that because it isn't 4G it will use less data. This is a stupid prediction. Pandora isn't going to use any more data at 3G then 4G. Webpages don't use more data at 4G then 3G. Sure people could browse more pages faster but as it is 3G is more then fast enough for web browsing. Personally this sound like a marketing statement more than anything.
I don't know how much RAM most modern smartphone boast but an iDevice with enough memory doesn't keep frickin' reloading photo-intensive pages every time users reopen the browser or return to a tab.
Most high-end smartphones now have more RAM than the iPhone, as the 4S didn't get an upgrade from the 4's 512MB and most of the top-range Android phones now have 1GB.
sprint is ok but they get the job done i have had a iphone on at&t and now sprint i am in a city with no 3g or 4g an it works fine not as fast as i want it to be, but there is def room for improvement, at&t just fucked me over cuz there is no service where i go to school and they told me it would so i went to sprint cuz they have the best price for the best deal and i dont have so much money to do an individual line by my self as a college student so sprint is ok they need to improve there network yes but there prices are great
You should stay in school buddy. That's the longest run-on sentence I have ever seen.
Agree. But I don't think he's done, as there is no period yet.
its a comment dumb ass i dont need to make it perfect you r the kinda person people beat the shit out of for being a know it all
Sprint user here, from Chicago.
Sprint works great for me. Websites load almost as fast on 3G as on wifi.
When I leave the metropolitan area to go to my cotage in the country...it still works well.
Just another testament to the fact that EACH CARRIER HAS ITS STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE.
Glad Sprint is working for someone...love their customer service and it has been good for the last 2 years, but not for us on iPhone. Sorli...
Glad it is working for you. I travel for a living & have been in 4 different cities the last week and can't get to .3Mbps--usually, .05-.07Mbps. I have had Sprint the last 10 years w/no problems, but something is wrong w/how it is interacting w/the iPhone 4S. I will be in about 6more cities in the next 4 days to continue testing it as I wait for Sprint tech support to get back to me.
Sprint touts unlimited data as something that users will actually be able to get the benefit of using. Here in Milwaukee, WI, I couldn't reach the data caps of competing providers using Sprint's data network. It is shockingly slow. Standing outside in direct line-of-sight of a base station I know to be Sprint's, I ran a few different speedtests and got a general average of 70 kbps down. That's only 14 kbps more than dial-up circa 1995. Now on Verizon, I can get at least an average of 1.8 Mbps down. That's not AT&T 3G speed, but it sure is adequate. Even with the speed boost, I don't come close to exceed 2GB per mo. While it's great to be able to have unlimited data plans, for now, knowing what leads to excess use is comforting in that I am still able to get optimal use out of my device. Oh yeah, forgot to mention Verizon's LTE is 23 Mbps down on average when I use my wife's Droid™ Bionic. There is a great shift in Milwaukee, WI to Verizon for its LTE, but I have not seen it slow down once.
I tried to use more data, but I couldn't get the 3G data speed to go much more than .5 Mb. I got a Sprint rep on the phone to confirm for me but there is a known issue with many iPhone 4S users experiencing extremely slow data speeds. I've already moved on to AT&T.
Same problem for me on Sprint and makes my new iPhone 4s unusable away for WIFI.
I get on average about .30 mbps Down and .01 mbps Up and most of my tests reported Sprint 3g cell service with 3 or more bars.
My home is absolutely the worst since my iPhone 4s antennae keeps trying to connect to Sprint with 1 bar and Extended network with 2 or 3 bars.
I understand this is supposed to make things better, but when you are out and about on Sprint or Roaming...service is so slow that Siri (the most advanced thing Apple talks about becomes USELESS and simply unusable pausing, failing, and otherwise.
WIFI most if not all problems, but I've only had my unit 3 days and plan to switch things out (probably move back to Verizon) next week if Sprint does not fix things soon in my area.
Excuses don't matter when you only have 14-days to decide and I love the article mentioning Sprint iPhone 4s users using less data....know kidding...3g doesn't work so why should we bother using it. Sorli...
You are lucky to get .5Mbps. I travel for a living and when I am not on wi-fi, the best I have gotten is .3Mbps. Usually, I get less than .1Mbps. I have a couple calls into Sprint tech support. They have tried a bunch of stuff and are supposed to get back to me in 72, now 48 hours. My 14 day return policy is almost up. If this isn't resolved, I have to choose: go to another carrier or change phones. What is interesting is I didn't have this problem w/either of my last 2 phones over the last 3+ years. Somehow, Sprint and iPhone aren't a good team yet, but it is unusable away from wi-fi. I like the phone, but this has to change.
Not just that but android pushes out OTA updates that can be well over a hundred megs. However, I say wait and see what happens when the jailbreaking begins. That is where the data really starts to bleed from carriers.
I have tried all 4 national providers and they are all great in some areas and terrible in others. Right now I have AT&T as it was the only option for an iPhone 2 years ago. But I have dropped calls, poor call sound quality, and often very weak 3G signal. Actually, where I live, Sprint is the only provider that doesn't drop calls so I will be switching to Sprint....even if it's 3G is supposedly slower....I am always on wifi plus AT&T's claims of having super fast 3G are not true in my neighborhood. It is super slow, sometimes as slow as Edge. My AT&T contract is up. Bye bye AT&T.
Here in New Jersey & Philadelphia,AT&T has great reception. When I go to Florida,ALSO great reception.Every now & then I get a dropped call.Since the beginning of cell phones,,,calls have lost signal and every now and then u get a dropped call. When someone gets a perfect flawless system, please let me know.

I can't stream any video on a sprint 4s iphone. Their network is way way too slow. Netflix wont even start a show...
