Apple rumored to be working on complete iTunes Store and App Store redesign
Apple is reportedly planning a redesign for the iTunes Store and App Store for sometime later this year. Apple hasn't introduced a complete overhaul to the iTunes Store interface since late 2009 when they introduced iTunes 9. Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac reports:
The new design is said to be even simpler and more user-friendly than the current design. Apple is working on ways to enhance the speed and efficiency of finding new content, such as songs, videos, and applications. The cornerstone element of Apple’s new iTunes Store is interactivity. As Apple vaguely explained to a number of music labels and entertainment partners, Apple is looking to make the iTunes Store a much more engaging experience. [...] The interactivity that Apple wants within the digital store is something Apple could only likely pull off by housing the store within a full-fledged application, not a pure web browser experience.
They're not sure if this redesign, like iTunes 9, will require a new version number -- iTunes 11 -- or if it will just be rolled into an iTunes 10 point release. However, discoverability is said to be on the agenda, with more interactive ways to find music, movies, apps, and games being a priority. It sounds like iTunes on Windows and Mac is the current focus, and may be timed to coincide with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion this summer, though the more traditional fall update cycle -- perhaps alongside the iPhone 5 -- could be a more likely possibility.

Thank the maker! Please change the name too. It's so much more than iTunes: music, books, pictures, movies, tv shows, etc. How about iMedia or iSync.
How about iMore? ... On second thoughts perhaps not, coz iMore just sounds silly.

Wow. Apple could break up OS X iTunes into multiple apps, like on iOS: iTunes, Music, Videos, iBooks, Newsstand, etc. The Mac App Store is already a separate app. iTunes could still act as the content discovery and purchase portal, but shed some its playback complexity. Maybe.
But that wouldn't really simplify things much. iTunes will still need to have access to all content available from Apple. It has to be the one place where people find and buy everything. Purchasing videos and songs in separate apps could be a terrible experience. And there are several technologies that Apple could leverage in a next-gen iTunes. (Too long to post here. Will post in the forums ASAP.)
One of the best things Apple could do to iTunes is to change the way it stores files. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the hierarchy of the file system. I have an idea. Store books in the books folder, music in the music folder, and movies in the movies folder to start.
After that, allow storage of media files on a server or an external drive without glitches. Reverting to the default path just because a sleeping drive or server didn't respond fast enough to a request is asinine.
Third, breaking up entire albums to 12 different folders because songs had more than one artist attached its meta data is ridiculous. Keep an album together in a folder as it was compiled by the label company. I can possibly understand this chaos if you were buying songs individually as many people do from iTunes. But if you are ripping entire CDs to your drive, don't scatter it all over the place.
Please make it like the Android Market. I can open that in my web browser,open a million apps in new windows and send the ones I want right to my device. In Apple if you search and purchase you go back to page one of your search...
The Store section needs to be much more intelligent. No matter how much they throw the latest Lady Ga Ga or Katy Perry song in my face, this 49 year old man is not going to buy it. Shouldn't this be a custom "homepage" of sorts? I don't park myself in front of a magazine section I am not interested in at the book store. I didn't go to a section I didn't listen to back when I was browsing in record stores. Let us have a choice of custom iTunes Store homepage of our own creation, or give people the option of letting iTunes analyze their existing libraries and create one automatically. I'm sure the current way is just an extension of that old payola parasite, and I would submit that it annoys many more people than it convinces. I think it's time to treat customers with more respect.
I'd also love to see a "normalize" function given to Podcasts which are of such widely varying amplitude that it's ridiculous and maybe even unhealthy. I understand this isn't Apple's fault, but since so many Podcast publishers don't seem to have a clue about audio, it sure would be helpful.

iTunes already handles this well if you know what to do: In the iTunes music library, select all the ripped tracks from the album, choose Get Info, check the "Part of a compilation" checkbox in the Options tab. All tracks so designated will be placed in a folder bearing the name of the album. This, in turn, resides in a folder named Compilations (rather than in the track artist's folder).
