iOS 8 review

iOS 8 review

Last year Apple stripped iOS bare in order to redefine how we do things. This year they build atop everything that came before in order to redefine what we can do.

iOS 8 is the latest version of the operating system software that powers every iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. That's hundreds of millions of mobile devices used day in, day out, by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

It includes updates to Messages and Photos, and an all-new Health app, a predictive keyboard and contextual Spotlight, interactive notifications and better Mail and Safari, Family Sharing options and Continuity workflows, and there's Extensibility, which allows for custom keyboards, custom sharing and action options, custom photo filters and effects, notification center widgets, iCloud Drive, and custom storage providers.

There are also new frameworks like HomeKit for home automation, manual camera controls, Touch ID authentication for third party apps, SpriteKit, SceneKit, and Metal for games, and a new programming language called Swift.

Yang to iOS 7’s yin, iOS 8 is a functional rejuvenation that counterbalances last year's visual refresh. And just like last year, when iOS 7 was called the biggest redesign since the first iPhone shipped in 2007, iOS 8 is being called the most important upgrade since the App Store launched in 2008. So, is it?

Read on for our comprehensive review of iOS 8.

Take to the high seas with Down Among the Dead Men gamebook

The great folks behind 80 Days and Sorcery! have released a new interactive book full of piratey goodness. Down Among the Dead Men has you take on the role of a magician, a thief, a pirate, or a governor's daughter in disguise among a seafaring crew. There's some curses involving the undead here too. You'll have the choice to be nice, fair, or full-out evil, with the text changing and narrative branching off depending on your decisions.

Yes, Camera Roll is gone in iOS 8 — Here's where it went and why!

One of the first things many people noticed yesterday after upgrading to iOS 8 was that the Camera Roll and Photo Stream sections in the Photos app were completely missing. This left many people confused and alarmed as to where their Camera Roll photos went, and understandably so. However, your photos are not gone and nothing is missing. They're just in a different location now.

Out of space to install iOS 8? Use iTunes instead!

If you're getting an error message that says you can't install iOS 8 because you don't have enough free space on your device, you have two choices: Either you can delete stuff until you do have enough space, or you can use your Mac or PC and iTunes to take care of it.

App Store now featuring multi-title bundles

One pleasant surprise today from the App Store's weekly refresh following iOS 8 app update insanity is a new type of app content called bundles. As the name suggests, this lets you buy multiple apps at once, often with a net savings. For example, the swell guys at Pixite have their whole suite of surreal photo editing apps available for $7.99.

Reviewed: The AR.Drone 2.0 Elite Edition is the connected toy you've always wanted

I have had my eye on the AR.Drone 2.0 Elite Edition Quadcopter‎ for quite a while, though I was never quite ready to drop $300 for one. So when Parrot offered to send me one, to say I was ecstatic would be an understatement. When the package arrived at my door, I quickly dropped what I was doing and got to work (well, got to play I guess). I popped open the box, pulled out all of the pieces, installed the free app (Android & iOS) and it was up, up, and away!

The choice in iOS 8 makes it the best one yet

There's an old saying; "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone." Personally speaking that's how picking up an iPhone or iPad after using other mobile platforms – predominantly Android – has felt until iOS 8 came along. But no more. iOS 8 truly is Apple's latest and very greatest, and finally some of the features many of us have either experienced elsewhere or looked longingly at from afar are here. And we should thank Apple for that.
