How to set up and start using your Apple Watch

Apple Watch will help you stay informed, stay in shape, stay in touch, and more. Once you set it up.

The Apple Watch is the most personal computer the company ever made. You wear it on your wrist and it pairs with the iPhone in your pocket or bag. From there it gives you notifications and widget-like glances, tracks your activity and exercise, handles calls and messages, makes payments, and controls your music and TV, and more. You can even customize your Apple Watch by swapping bands, changing clock faces, and more.

Here's everything you need to know to get started!

How to view goal metrics in Workout for Apple Watch

The Workout app for Apple Watch lets you log workouts quickly and easily.

By default, you'll see a large ring on the screen of your Apple Watch during a workout. It gives you a general idea of how much progress you've made during your exercising period. While it's a good indicator, if you prefer more specific data — what Apple calls "goal metrics" — you can get those too. So, if you want to see total elapsed time, distance, or calories burned while you work out, all you need to do is adjust a few settings.

Siri 'third generation' architecture includes Apache Mesos and, yes, JARVIS

During a recent meet-up, a slide showed that Apple considered Siri to be on its third generation architecture.

Like any major online service, Siri is constantly being updated behind the scenes to improve stability, scalability, and performance. This presentation is specific called out Apache Mesos as helping with all of that, as well as efficiency and latency, and the ability to more easily build out additional services. The Mesosphere blog:

Final Apple Q2 2015 earning estimates

Final Apple Q2 2015 earning estimates

Apple reports its second quarter earnings at 1:30pm PT, 4:30pm ET today.

The numbers for AAPL will certainly be big, the real questions is how big? Everything from iPhone to iPad to Mac sales, revenue from services like iTunes and the App Store, and profits from Apple Retail and Online will determine that. (It's early for the Apple Watch and Apple has said the company won't be breaking those numbers out anyway, at least not yet.) As usual, analysts professional and amateur alike have made their predictions.

Flying the Apple Watch skies

Flying the Apple Watch skies

Flying the Apple Watch skies

I've been wanting to try travel with the Apple Watch since Apple first introduced it. This weekend, I had the chance.

The iPhone has been my frequent travel companion for a while now. I do almost everything with it. So, I was curious to see how different, if at all, traveling with the Apple Watch would be. I've long believed the Apple Watch's killer feature would be convenience. But reality doesn't always live up to our beliefs, especially when it comes to travel. So, with that in mind, on my flight home yesterday I decided to put the Apple Watch to the test.

How to view your step count on Apple Watch

How to view your step count on Apple Watch

Although the Apple Watch prefers to track calories rather than steps, you can still get your count.

If you're coming from a conventional fitness tracker, that might be confusing at first. How many calories you burned or how many minutes of brisk activity you engaged in might not correlate with the steps you've gotten used to. Luckily, Apple Watch will still tell you your steps, you've just got to know where to look. And once you do, making the transition to calories can be much easier!

Switch to iPhone: For better industrial design

Switch to iPhone: For better industrial design

Switch to iPhone: For better industrial design

"Paint the back of the fence", has been referenced time and again, "because you'll know."

It's a quote from the late Steve Jobs' father intended to help instill pride in craft. Jony Ive, Apple's senior vice president of design, has spoken numerous times about the importance and inevitability of great design as well, about the care and consideration it takes, and how people notice it even when they don't notice themselves noticing it.

Recently there was a brouhaha about a Qualcomm sticker junking up the Samsung Galaxy S6 on Verizon. You don't see a sticker like that on the iPhone 6 or any other iPhone, of course, because Apple cares more about the look of their product than the licensing fees or other considerations refusing it entails. Same with Intel Inside stickers on the Mac.

But when I looked at the picture of Samsung's product, it wasn't the sticker that bothered me so much. That, I assume, can be peeled off. It was something else I saw that bothered me, and something I can now never un-see.

Apple's HealthKit goes live for 80,000 patients at Cedars-Sinai

HealthKit aims to bring patients and medical professionals together with great technology and careful consideration for privacy.

That's the challenge faced by Apple, hospitals, and customers alike, who want to take advantage of everything connected devices make possible, but in a way that's responsible, practical, and secure. HealthKit, which syncs data between the Health app on the iPhone, the Apple Watch, over 900 apps, and a broad range of medical and fitness peripherals, with doctors and researchers, aims to accomplish all of that and more. How to check your heart rate with Apple Watch

How to check your heart rate with Apple Watch

Your Apple Watch contains sensors that let you check your current heart rate whenever you'd like.

As long as you're wearing your Apple Watch it will check and log your heart rate by itself every ten minutes. All the data Apple Watch collects about your heart rate is then transferred automatically to the Health app on your iPhone. This happens more frequently during a workout, unless you make adjustments. However, you can also check your heart rate on demand whenever you'd like. Here's how!
