Apple announces AirPrint Wireless Printing for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch coming with iOS 4.2 in November

iOS 4.2 coming soon for iPad... and iPhone

Apple today announced AirPrint Wireless Printing for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch coming with iOS 4.2 in November:

“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC.”

“We’re pleased to work with Apple to bring Apple’s AirPrint to our fall lineup of ePrint printers in time for the holiday shopping season,” said Vyomesh Joshi, HP executive vice president, Imaging and Printing Group. “Making it easy for our customers to print anytime, anywhere, is a key priority for HP. iPad, iPhone and iPod touch customers are going to love how easy it is to print using our new range of ePrint printers, creating high-quality printed pages in an instant.”

AirPrint is designed to support a wide range of printers from entry level inkjet printers to office laser printers. Additionally, iOS 4.2 devices can print to printers shared through a Mac® or a PC. iOS 4.2 compatible HP printers this fall include the HP Photosmart, Officejet, Officejet Pro and LaserJet Pro series ePrint enabled printers.

AirPrint will work with iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (second generation and later).

iOS 4.2 has just gone into beta for developers.

Shared how? Just a network share or is this going to require something like Bonjour running?

Collin says:

Will I be able to print to my current HP wireless printer or will it have to be a new version?

dloveprod says:

That's crazy that you have to buy a new printer.

Lo says:

Ugh that multitasking and joined email can't come soon enough.... It's so weird going from an iPhone to iPad until then

David says:

Looks like it will function similar to the way printing from the iPhone app Grocery iQ works today, allowing me to print coupons directly from my iPhone to my networked HP 2605dn color laserjet printer. Both the iPhone and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and I simply select the HP color laser printer from the Printers menu in the More tab.

Leon says:

i'm about to purchase the new iphone 4s, Are you sure you can use air print to networked HP 2605 colour printer? HP forum said it couldn't be done with this model.
thanks

Trevor says:

You don't need a new printer if you have it hooked up to a networked computer. Also, anyone else think this is only the first piece of awesomeness to come out of relations between Palm, er, HP?

Webvex says:

Sounds a bit disappointing. I hope they expand printer support down the road, beyond just these HP ePrint printers and PC-connected printers. Coincidentally, I use an app now named ePrint, and it prints very well to my color Laserjet--networked, but not directly attached to my Mac.

Amyli says:

hmm, sounds great news for iPad, iPhone, iPod users, at least it's easier tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly. Though maybe they have to get it to do is accept VGA, USB and Flash, I think someone have already solved the flash support with HTML5, you know there are so many HTML5 replace flash solution online: On Apple's iPad, HTML5 and Flash in iFunia iPad coulmn

With the OSX 10.6.5 beta on my Mac and shared printers I am printing from my iPad to my Dell 2335dn and my Kyocera 5016n just fine. Not sure if you will be able to print to shared Windows printers but I don't see them from my iPad at this point.

....And it's STILL not as functional as the Tablet PC's that have been collecting dust in my garage for a decade. Yup, revolutionary indeed.
PS: I have some other good APPS from aneesoft want to recommend. Maybe someone will like it.

Yanka says:

My PC is increasingly becoming irrelevant. I don't even want to wake it up and go through the hassle of logging in. My iPad is always by my side, and I would really love to print to my color laser printer. If I have to buy a Apple wireless printhub.. I would do this.

Question to Apple - is HP the only company that makes printers?
