Apple releases iOS 5.0.1 to the masses, includes bug fixes for battery life

With the developer build having now been out for a while, and some folks claiming to have already received the update via Apples customer care -- Apple has now sent iOS 5.0.1 to the masses. You can either update over-the-air (OTA) right on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or plug into iTunes and do it the old fashioned way. As noted in the change log:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

Safe to say quite a few people who have been experiencing issues with their battery on the iPhone 4S will be looking carefully at this update to ensure it really does address their concerns. Full release notes are past the break for you all as well as a list of compatible devices.

Or you could just go to software update and download it OTA. Did you forget they added that in iOS 5?

My iPad stuttered when I turned it on just now, so I restarted it, checked for a update to my apps, and iOS, nothing. It glitches again, and I rebooted it, then checked again, and there it was 50MB update..
Glitches=pending update :-)

D/L'ing mine via OTA, needs WiFi, says to connect to power source to not lose any battery during the install. Least I don't have to jack with iTunes today.

I just did the update on my iPad 1 OTA. took 4 minutes to complete. now its doing a reboot. Pretty cool that we can now do OTA delta updates.

Did the download OTA but did receive an error about a minute into it. I tried again and it went through fine. The error may have just been due to server load. I really like this new feature, I can now update anywhere/anytime with w-fi granted!

Does anyone know if any of the various "bug fixes" includes a fix to the constant crashing of Safari when exiting private browser mode?

Maybe a stupid question but when I sort of read about this software it was only talking about the gps battery fix give or take and I never leave the gps on. Is this gona help my phone ?

14 minutes to download and install. 40.1 mb for iPod touch.
Hope it stops the wifi drop out I have been having.

Hallelujah, 5.0.1 just resurrected my 3GS, thanks Apple, vast speed improvement, under 5.0 it looked like iOS was swapping quite often. Battery life -> will see tomorrow I guess.

I'd say it's time for the dev team to put up or shut up. A lot of people need to know if it's coming or not. I'd like the battery fix but not if a jailbreak is coming. So, what do you have guys and when are we going to see it?

I did not see it in the release notes...does anybody know if the "Instapaper fix" -- APIs to designate non-synced, non-flushable areas for an app -- made it into 5.0.1 final?

I've noticed absolutely no improvements upon the already terrible battery life. I'm almost ready to go back to the 4 until they can figure this nonsense out.

I had wi-fi for the update, have wi-fi at work, have it at home. However I also have an unlimited data plan, I would love to be able to do the update over 3G.
I also understand that while this option would be good for me, it could be a disaster for less experienced users that don't have an unlimited data plan, who might just not be careful and go way beyond their data plan.

Mattywalnuts...
This happened to me. You have to go to Settings, Reset, "Erase all Content and Setting". MAKE SURE you do a backup to iCloud first! Then when it is finished you do a restore from iCloud. Then the contact names will appear. I had tech support to talk me through that and have had no problems since.

Can anyone tell me if this is any different then the prereleased version to to developers.....Im in China and last time I tried updating my phone here it wouldn't reconnect to the network...either way Ill wait and Im on 5.1 beta 2...
Thanks

OTA did not work with mine. Downloaded, but would not install. Plugged it into iTunes to download, and it's gonna take over an HOUR to download, apparently. sigh

Why won't my Podcasts show up on my iPhone 4S after syncing? I though the new iOS would fix this but it didn't. iTunes says they are synced but they are nowhere to be found on my iPhone 4S.

Been on standby 1hr:25mins, used phone about 45 mins and it's at 91%. I hate to say it but it is only a very, very slight improvement, update doesn't really fix anything!

I have a slow DSL connection, but still under 10 min to download on the iPhone 4 and half that time on the iPad2. Both installed without any issues.

I got the update at around 4:30... after I did the update, my battery was at 73%... here I am, a little over 3 hours later, and my battery is at 26%...
This was w/ a 10 minute phone call, and on/off iPod usage... which, isn't much, considering daily I do WAY more than that.. By comparison, yesterday my battery lasted for 18 hours...
I'm not thrilled about the update so far. If it doesn't get better, I'm gonna be one pissed Apple customer.

Didn't help. Less than six hours light usage on wifi on a full charge. Too bad... :/ I was really hoping it would fix it.

Downloaded and updated much faster OTA for my iPad 2 than the old fashioned way. I love the OTA updates.
Also the reason they want it over wifi is so there is no problem during loading the iOS. Anyone who has had problems and ad to restore when an update was cut short knows how bad that sucks!

How are people complaining that there is no improvement in battery life already? Give it a cycle or 2 before you start judging the update.

This also fixes the Charlie Miller unsigned code exploit. Not bad, they got a fix out within a few days.
Kernel
Available for: iOS 3.0 through 5.0 for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, iOS 3.1 through 5.0 for iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iOS 3.2 through 5.0 for iPad, iOS 4.3 through 5.0 for iPad 2
Impact: An application may execute unsigned code
Description: A logic error existed in the mmap system call's checking of valid flag combinations. This issue may lead to a bypass of codesigning checks. This issue does not affect devices running iOS prior to version 4.3.
CVE-ID
CVE-2011-3442 : Charlie Miller of Accuvant Labs

This is not how OTA updates nor any update should be like.
The problems I've seen so far has been missing copy/paste, contacts in message issue, battery problem UNfixed, clock sync location UNfixed, music sync UNfixed, stuttering issues.
Apple should be ashamed.

Went to bed, phone at 91 percent. Woke up, phone at 77 percent. (Nothing running in background, strong 3G signal.) I'd say they need to work a little more on addressing the battery issue, because this update does't seem to have done it.

Update worked flawlessly on my iPhone 4, took about 5 minutes over wi-fi, can't say anything about battery life right now but the device feels faster somehow, it's like I had a little lag in the animations before that is gone now.
Other than that can't say I'm noticing anything different.

Not sure if anyone else notices it but the fix seemed to have made the LED notification work a lot better. I had it set on my 4S once I got it and it never really worked that well, just here and there. But since the update it works all the time now. It was nice this morning when my alarm went off the LED did as well which it never did before. Anyone else notice this?

OTA worked great for my iphone 3GS and my kids two Ipod Touch 4G's but I had to do a tethered update for my Ipad 1!
Glad I have the officially sanctioned multi-touch gestures on my ipad 1 now, but sad that the hacked screen mirroring disappeared; Apple why can't you officially sanction that; it works!

I love the OTA feature. But please stop with the wifi use only. I also have unlimited data I ckuldip have done this during my lunch time. Next time do so Apple. Other than that the update is doing good on my iPhone 4 & iPod touch 4.

My 30GB U2 iPod has a sound glitch: about 2 3 seconds into each song there is a noticeable dropout. It happens with every song. This started recently after a long period of non-use.

Thanks for another informative site. Where else could I am getting that kind of info written in such a perfect means? I've a mission that I'm just now working on, and I've been on the glance out for such info.
